I have an Apple TV 3rd generation connected to my BV7. I have never used it much for movies preferring to use my Oppo BR player. However, due to replacing my BL 20s with 50s I no longer have room for the cabinet the Oppo was in so I am going to start using the Apple TV for movies. My question is, would there be any benefit to upgrading to a newer Apple TV given I am using a BV7. Looking at the Apple TV specifications I do not think I would gain anything with an upgrade. Is that correct? Although the specifications describe the third generation as dolby digital pass through and the 4k as dolby digital....is that a real difference or just different wording? Thanks!

I don't know about the wording.

I have both and wouldn't upgrade if I were you.

The 4K has some better specs, which makes some apps run better. No visible difference though if your use case is video and audio.

Re: Pass though on earlier generation Apple TV.

“Apple TV includes a built-in decoder for Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby Digital audio. This means that the Apple TV is able to decode Dolby audio rather than simply pass the compressed bitstream to another device (such as an audio/video receiver [AVR] or a sound bar). Decoding the audio inside of the Apple TV enables Apple to support several features such as mixing of other sounds from the system, Siri®voice input, and so on.”

Aren't they referring to the Apple TV 4 there, not the 3? I didn't think the 3 had Siri. I know the remote is superior on the 4 vs. the 3 at the least.

I'm afraid I'm recovering from the BeoVirus. Sad

You are correct, no Siri on my third generation.

Oh... I got confused. I thought you were asking to compare 4 with 4K. You indeed asked for the 3rd generation. In this case, I'd suggest an upgrade. The 4/4K are a major upgrade. You have the full list in the link above.

There are lots of upgrades....but none that would be an upgrade in picture or audio quality with my BV7? Or am I missing something?

Alternatively, look at getting a second hand Mac Mini on eBay for the same price, along with a wireless keyboard+trackpad (Logitech do a nice combined one). You now have proper YouTube, BBC iPlayer, plus a full computer, rather than the fairly basic Apple TV experience.

Maybe you won't gain anything when it comes to picture and sound quality, but content-wise the atv4 & 4k are totally different beasts compared to the older models – really good streaming apps and also good media players such as Plex if you have a media server in your network.

Regarding Mac mini: I bought a Mac Mini and an AppleTV 3 in 2013 and connected them both to my TV. The Mac Mini got used in the manner that Calvin describes, but after I upgraded to an AppleTV4 the Mac Mini hasn't been used as a player as the AppleTV 4 imho really is much better suited for the task. Instead the Mac Mini is used purely as a media server (running PLex, iTunes and Twonky) to serve my three AppleTVs, my Core, my V1 and iphones/ipads.

Thanks! That is what it seemed like to me. Will keep my third generation for now.

I’d say, that it depends on what you use the ATV for.

If you are content with the preinstalled apps on the 3, that’s fine. Should you want more - install apps yourself etc - go for the 4.

Soundwise you should know that the 4 supports Dolby Digital Plus, which might give you a better experience than plain old Dolby Digital.

Dolby Digital Plus is generally used by the streaming services for the sound of the movies today.

If you are a friend of Radio Paradise.....they have a superb app with gorgeous pictures while streaming music -and you can choose FLAC as your output format.

The 4 is definitely more versatile - but not everyone needs it.

Personally I have upgraded my 3’s to the 4’s.

That is a reason to upgrade. Thanks!

I am not the one that should be aiming at convincing you to change your mind šŸ˜

But now that you have gotten the BL50’s, you would really benefit from such device šŸ˜‰

Look at the different connections between the ATV 3,4 and 4K.

ATV 3 has optical, the 4’s doesn’t. So you need an audio extractor.

ATV4 K has an 1 GB network, wereas the 4 had only 100Mb.

I upgraded last year to the 4 and finally the 4K. In combination with Infusion Pro app a perfect and nice looking mediaplayer.

I have tested both apple tv4 and 4k. I think the sound is better in the 4k model. It may have a better dac. I think even the picture seems better.

Beovision 7-55 MK1 red, Beolab 10 red. Beolab 50, all black. Beolab 17 broken ice. Beolab transmitter. Apple tv4 and apple express 2.

Thank you! I am sure I would notice the same improvement as we have the same systems, BV7-55 and BL50.
