I discovered this on the FCC ID website.

It appears a new 2nd generation Beosound A1 is on the way which has Alexa built in.

Echo dot on steroids?

Note also the name change from Beoplay to Beosound

Interesting... a bit strange that they team up with Amazon on a single product, when Google seems to be the major partner for majority of the other products.

Maybe they are going to use both in the future, others do that.

The A1 have never been updated, so a refresh seem about right.

But with Alexa, is it still going to have batteries? sounds interesting.

A totally naive and ignorant assertion but here is what I think it may be:

Some people is more and more intrigued or seduced by vocal assistants, but at the same time more and more reluctant to give their keys to Google.
Google invasion has been widely advertised when Amazon is often view as the quiet "round the corner shop which delivers everything in 48h" being less criticized as a data miner, even if it is still.

Then, for third parties, it maybe make sense to bet on a possible GA decline and go for an alternative assistant, just in case.

Am I correct in assuming that the A1 will be upgraded from just bluetooth to WifI? With possible future capabilitity of multiroom functionality?

They made a decision to use voice control as the primary control paradigm a while ago, and also that they would be agnostic about which voice assistant to support (i.e. not just one)

That they have shipped products with GA firstly is not a matter of preference, but just what they have got to first.

Siri is supposed to be included in this list of inclusion, though I can understand why that is a slower road to travel.

Anyway, voice assistants are the devil to me, so I'll leave this one for others to enjoy.

That would be great! Would love to see another battery powered NL product beyond the BS1.

I assume it has to be WiFi, if one can have any use of Alexa. Also an external power source (in addition to battery) would make sense if you want it as an assistant in your home.

There is no reference to WiFi in the documentation as far as I can see.

But I can’t see how Alexa would work without it?

AFAIK Google home use Wifi but is not a wifi speaker.

Well, as it requires WiFi to work I would say it falls under the term “WiFi speaker”.

There are headphones that manage to support Alexa without having WiFi. I imagine it would depend on your phone for this functionality.
