Dear All,

Sadly one of my Beolab 4 speakers has developed a fault. When powered up, it emits a high-pitched pulsing noise, crackles, pops & the green LED flickers on and off.

I have tested the speaker in isolation on several different amps & the result is the same.

Have any of the forum members experienced a similar failure? I was wondering it would be worth purchasing a replacement board such as this http://www.quality-dream-audio.co.uk/new-spare-parts/23.html ?? Any advice or opinions gratefully received!

Kind regards

Julian

It will most likely be a shorted output stage on the amplifier module.
= Buy from your dealer and replace the amplifier module.

The pulsing comes from the power supply (switch-mode type), trying to get voltages up.

Yes. A couple of times.
I also found the faulty components each time but it's all custom chips, nowhere to be found.

Hi Julian,

I agree with Martin, one of my Beolab 4s did the same thing, I replaced the amplifier board and this solved the problem.  If you upgrade your Beoworld membership to Silver or Gold level, you can access the service manuals section of the site - Beolab 4 is very straightforward to work on (compared to some other B&O products!)

Kind regards, Steve.

Fakes.
Note that the listing doesn't say anything about what the IC can do.
- That's because it can't do a thing.
It's nothing but empty IC housings with your choice of logo and lettering on top.
Ask them any IC type you want - they can deliver very fast regardless of type and amount.
Been there - got the T-shirt. (And my money back from Paypal).

Some of these asian sellers even list their counterfeit semiconductors as "DIY".
In case of trouble they will just tell you that you will have to do something yourself to make it work - exactly as mentioned in the listing title.

You're probably right
Interesting to me is, that nobody supplied these components

At a dollar each with free shipping?  - Yes, I probably am.

Custom semiconductors are rarely available anywhere else. Unless perhaps as salvaged (used) parts.
Haven't seen any of those either, and that's probably because they are not only soldered to the board but also glued.

Ask your dealer for a module. They are readily available from B&O.
I'm getting old so don't kill me if my memory fails, but I seem to remember a price
somewhere in the 100 UK pounds range.  Not too bad, really.

I've fixed several. Not all went succesfully. 6-7 out of 10.

Parts can easily be ordered via regular distributors. Keep in mind that the numbers isn't the complete typenumber.

That's common with smd parts.

The price of an amplifier has been doubled in last 2 years.

So my advise would be, buy them new and try to repair the old boards for future failure.

Thank you all for your contributions, I've received & fitted the replacement board. Speaker is now working perfectly! All in all a very satisfying solution!

Kind regards

My Beolab 4 suddenly failed today, high pitched pulsing sound, then nothing and faded red LED.

Could someone point me in the right direction for a replacement board?
