Just a simple question.

Can you use a hdmi-arc socket from a different brand tv to feed a hdmi input on a BS3.

So, connect all video sources on the tv and use the hdmi-arc on that for transferring the audio to the BS3?

Would that work?

I know that the BS3 (I have the mk3 version also) doesn't support hdmi-arc from it's specifications.I also know that other newer brand panels have hdmi-(e)arc on 1 or more sockets.

If I remember correct you can setup the audio on a LG C9 panel to be re-directed to one of it's hdmi ports So, in that case the the LG would act as some kind of source for the BS3 . The BS3 would be then a substitute for a soundbar.

The advantage you would have is that hdmi could handle lossless audio formats when you compare it with digital coax or optical spdif, which support at it's best DD or DTS.

Is handshake or protocol the keyword in which is missing with the above mentioned setup?

Whether you’d connect the output/C9 via HDMI or via SPDIF, the result will basicly be the same - the BSys3 cannot decode the lossless audio formats, that might be used with a multi channel source connected to or built in to the C9.

Apart from that, controlling that combo would not be very intuitive.....nothing that I would expect my wife wanting to handle.

There is a tv - and there is a BV

@MM

Does Bsys3  play lossless audio formats from Deezer, via Google Chromecast ultra, plugged into the one of the Bsys3 hdmi inputs?

Hi, interesting this! It would also mean there is no optical to coax converter needed.

I do not have an answer, but will be following with interestt Smile

The idea was to ditch the BV9, as nice as it is, but keep the BS3 mk3 behind it.

At this moment I have an ATV4K which streams the digital audio via LPCM into one of my hdmi's. I have an 7.1 setup and can choose the DTS-MA, True HD etc audiotracks on several content and the BS3 displays then " PCM 7.1". I'm in the assumption that this is not possible with you use optical and/or digital coax with 5.1 as maximum. At least hdmi  can carry more audio formats than optical/coax. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Afaik hdmi can transport losses formats.

Hi Beobuddy, as said that I will folow your moves with great interest (as I am planning to do something alike), I do have already two questions:

- do you think any version of the BS3 would be ok? (you said you have the mk3)

- do you think the BS3 can control an LG C9 oled through the rs232c port "svc only" (so no need for visible IR wires)

Regards, Johan

Yep I’m with you / get what you’re saying

I thought of buying a second life BS3 to do this effectively. To use surround sound with beolabs and with a Sony OLED but with HDMI sources plugged in to the Sony as the BS3 can’t do 4K pass through

I wonder if the BS4 has the same limitations

I am not sure about C9, but my C8 cannot output audio only thru the hdmi arc port. I ended up using optical out and am testing the difference between PCM out or auto from LG.

BL8000, BL10, BL4000, BL2, BL3 (Sold), Beocentre 2 (Sold), Beosystem 3, LG C8

Hi Beobuddy, in a recent post you wrote about using a Marmitek HDMI ARC sound extractor. Is that device not exactly what you could use to get the sound from the LG into the BS3 over HDMI (keeping 7.1 and other surround formats)?

I plan to buy an LG C9 soon and will try and find a BeoSystem 3, I am not sure yet which ones will be good. Am curious about your plans!

Johan

There are a few things to keep track of here:

The Beosystem 3 does not support ARC, the newer E-ARC or the newer lossless HD audio formats like Dolby TrueHD and DTS-MA

Per https://www.rtings.com/tv/tests/inputs/5-1-surround-audio-passthrough No TV tested can pass PCM 5.1 through HDMI-ARC. The newer HDMI-EARC can but is very new and there are not many devices supporting it yet.

The ATV4 by default outputs LPCM not bitstream and can't do HD bitstream natively, I also don't believe it can decode TrueHD, DTS-MA or even base DTS. But some specific media players may have their own decoder and pull it off (not Plex though)

----------------------

I've also considered doing something similar for my Plex setup, I have both ATV4 and Nvidia Shield client device. Two versions come to mind where you skip any attempt at using the HDMI-ARC feature. One where you do can use HDMI-ARC but no BS3.

Version 1 (If a media player can be found that does convert bitstream to LPCM.)

Use a client device like ATV4 or maybe an Nvidia Shield.

Use an HDMI splitter like this : https://www.amazon.ca/Splitter-Extractor-Converter-Output-Signal/dp/B07PM3PF96 to split the audio from the video, route the video separately to the tv, route the audio to the BS3 via a regular HDMI input

Version 2:

Use a client device that can output these audio formats in bitstream (eg. an Nvidia Shield) (I know for sure the Shield works for this as I have it setup this way to a Marantz Processor)

Use an OPPO UDP-103,105,203 or 205. All feature 1 HDMI input, 1 HDMI Video+Audio output and 1 HDMI audio only output.

Connect the Shield to the blu-ray player input, the blu-ray player video output to the tv, the blu-ray player audio output to the BS3.

The OPPO now receives the video and hd audio, it converts the Bitstream to LPCM, supplies the audio to the BS3 HDMI input.

Version 3:

Give up on the BS3 and use the OPPO as the processor, it really can be used that way as it has full 7.1 volume controlled pre-outs and triggers along with very good DAC's. But none of that B&O magic sadly :(

It also supports HDMI-ARC so it will do Bitstream 5.1 of basic DD and DTS tracks sent by the TV. (But again HDMI-ARC does not support LPCM 5.1 so no HD audio tracks)

I'd really welcome feedback if someone has had experience with versions 1 and 2 in particular, curious if there is some barrier I'm not seeing to this working (Eg issues with HDCP for example)

Anyway I hope that helps.
