Hi all

Does anyone have an update on the CD ripper issue where it does not work with long cable installations? My beosound 5 was installed without the ripper due to no stock, now there is stock BUT for a long while now the local dealer tells me there is a known problem with the ripper and it does not work correctly with the long cables - which mine has, so he will not install until it is resolved.

Anyone know better?

Thanks

Hi,

I am led to believe that the maximum cable length recommended for it to work is 4.5 metres.

Hope this helps

Why the long cable?

I wonder if is possible to connect it or even a "normal" USB-ripdrive direct to the USB on the Master5 - why not?

Though this is not a definitive answer, my take is it has something to do with the power dropping to a point, where it's no longer enough for powering the drive.

I think this could be resolved wit simply using one of those USB cables with an extra male plug for power, to double the amount of milliamps fed to the drive.

This shouldn't harm anything, and could be worth a shot, but don't hunt me down if anything happens afterall.

If the ripping device is to be attached to the BeoSound 5 - yes.

A (quite costly) "BeoSound 5 Cable Extender" solution exists - if distance between BSd 5 and BM 5 exceeds
9m without ripper or 4.5m if ripping device is used.

This solution is working up to distances of 40m using 2 CAT 7 cables.
In all these cases the ripping device has to be placed close (4.5m) to the Beomaster 5.

Vienna,

Do you mean that the ripper could not be attached to the BS5 ?

I ask because i'm interested in the ripper but i think it ruins the overall beauty of the BS5.

So, the idea is to use the standard 4,5m cable between BS5 and BM5, and place the ripper near (or on) the BM5.

Do you think it's possible ?

There will be a problem:

Standard (4,5m) cables will fit between BM5 and ripper - but standard cables won't fit between ripper
and BSd 5 "panel" . You would need a long (4,5m) version of the two short "jumper" cables supplied with the
ripping station.

The two short cables for power and usb between ripping station and BSd 5 panel use different plugs
on the "outgoing" side of the ripping station towards the panel (others than the plugs used for the
"outgoing" connectors of the BeoMaster 5).

Or you just buy an external CD/DVD-drive, with external Power-supply, connect it via USB to the Beomaster and hide the Drive inside a rack. That's the way I did it and it works just fine! :)

Hi TWG,

thanks for the answer to my question above.

Just wanted to hear if someone already had tested it.

At the moment I let a Vortexbox do the ripping, because the BV5 cannot rip to FLAC

TWG,

Yes, good idea, but...

You must connect a keyboard and a mouse to the BM5, enter the windows embedded, change the Windows Media Player parameters, ..., to get an automatic rip in the good directory, and in the good format.

You take the risk of modified the system...
