Hi, I've bought a Beolit 700 that seems to be in better than average condition cosmetically but there's no FM reception. MW & LW seem to work, but FM just gives a background signal when the volume is turned up. This is the same across the tuning range with no indication of any stations being detected.  Is there some obvious/common  fault that I could look for that might cause this? My tools are limited to a multimeter.

Hope someone can help!!

Bad contact in the tuning capacitor or a bad transistor in the tuner frontend?

Thanks, Martin. I can't find any problem with a bad contact with the tuning cap - no crackling or other effect when I put pressure on the mini-board or the joints - so may be a transistor? I don't have a transistor tester - can I do this with a simple multimeter? Anything else I could try whilst I wait for Mr ebay to send me some transistors?

You can do a few voltage readings inside the frontend housing, but keep in mind that, depending on the quality of your meter, it may introduce
loads and capacitances that will disturb the sensitive circuits in there. Readings taken with a standard multimeter may look somewhat wrong.

Transistors - don't buy from Asia. There's a huge risk of receiving counterfeits, fakes or even empty shells.

Yes, my meter was cheap and nasty when it was new 18 years ago - time for a new one. OK for old bikes and household wiring but not much else. Thanks for the tip - I've ordered trannys from a UK source, reputedly Philips products, but who knows where they were made.

This could be down to a dirty FM switch.  I have a similar issue but the other way round (no MW or LW)  I have removed the switches and trying to clean them.  Any recommendations on how to clean the switches would be very useful
