I notice that reviewers tend to try them out lying flat. Probably out of convenience.

Wonder if there is much difference in sound experience between the two positions?

I used mine in both forms - flat and facing the listener. In my rooms, I didn’t notice much of a difference at all. The speakers are designed for movies so the sound seems to come from all around vs a stereo system. It looks better in real life than what the pictures show.
