Quick question: when I play a record on my Beogram 5500 with MMC4, it plays fine for about a half track, then the stylus seems to buckle under its own weight until the tone arm is actually touching the record. I set the tracking weight to what’s recommended for the MMC4.

Is this a problem with my setup/tracking weight, or is it a cartridge cantilever problem? If so, is Axel still doing rebuilds (website seemed to be down last I checked), or is SoundSmith my best option?

The person who worked with Axel for a long time is now running his own service. I had an MMC4 repaired/refurbished a year or so ago and it was an excellent repair.  You can have an examination and repair to MMC4 standard or can go for various upgrades as well.

I don't know if the issue if your cartridge or the Beogram tone arm.

The Beogram 5500 service manual should cover setting and checking the tracking weight (1.2 / 1.3g is recommended if I remember correctly).
