Hello all. I recently was given an old Beocenter 2000 about 1980 vintage, yes I know it is a bit of a poor relation but it has sentimental value. volume on the radio is good but on phono the sound is low even on high volume is this possibly the stylus at fault? I don't want to buy a new one to find out it is something else?
Any help would be really welcome
Hello DWJH,
I just checked Beoworld's product info. to see if the Beocentre 2000 had an in built RIAA pre-amp but it's not specified.I also checked Beocentral"s page which also had no information re: a built in pre-amp.I suggest you read their page ,because it's not very complimentary towards this model.
You are right to question the stylus , but in my experience, the stylus usually will break down on one channel only ,not both.
If there is no built in pre-amp, you will have to connect one ( I needed one because my Beogram 2402 and the Beomaster 4500 didn't have an inbuilt pre-amp).I got it from Steve at Sounds Heavenly for a very reasonable price (somewhere around $120 Aus dollars).
Low volume (and maybe even distortion) can be traced back to : does it have a pre-amp or not ???
regards
Noel.
It's an integrated deck, so it has a built-in RIAA.Check the supply voltage to the RIAA and preamp sections. You should have apprx 39V on 9C11.

Many thanks for your reply, it is most welcome. I feel quite a fool really as I had actually not connected the speakers correctly. The right speaker now works well on phono but the left is still producing no noise apart from the odd crackle. I swapped the speakers over and the left side remains problematic, so speakers are ok, does this point more to stylus as the radio works well on both speakers?
I can only apologise for my misleading first report. I can only try to excuse myself by saying this is not my field of knowledge and what was easy to remove plugs from holes was not as straight forward to put them back weeks later. Especially having just located a record to try.
Many thanks to Both people who replied to this. It is most kind. To share your extensive knowledge with such a rank beginner. Though it was a bit beyond me to be honest.
Again very many thanks
Hello again,
It's good that you've eliminated the speakers as the problem,so now it's down to the pre-amp section or the stylus.(As far as I know, the radio won't be going through the pre-amp) So I would suggest you try Martin's advice before you go out and buy a new cartridge.
