Hello everyone,

My BS3200 is acting very strange.  When I want to copy a CD to HDD, it says LOADING and nothing happens.

It worked this morning only 1 time , but I cannot access the HDD anymore. It says LOADING and that is all.

I tried to run a Service test TM 27 and it seems that everything is OK.

When in STBY, if i press CD MEM, nothing happens.

Any help is kindly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

This can be caused by a dying harddrive or a slowly degrading powersupply. These IDE (PATA) harddrives are already at least 10 years old.

What does the BS3200 do after several minutes, going  into standby?

Thanks for your answer! Really appreciate.

Most of the times it goes into standby after 8-9 seconds( screen is ON but CD MEM not showing).

If i disconnect from power, then CD MEM is showing but that is it.

Exceptionally, I tried to copy a CD to HDD few days ago and it worked. But only one. COPY OK at the end of the process was showing. But after no way to acces the HDD.

I have the service manual but there is no schematics for the power supply.

The Beosound is made in 2006.

Thanks

The BS3200 is pretty much the same as the BS3000 when it comes to the basics.

For the harddrive part there is an additional capacitor and regulator. But I would around the +5V lline.

Thanks!

Thanks for pointing me to it. So, bottom line, I should check the voltage! I have a spare PATA HDD that I will also install it just in case.

As soon as i have time I will open it and check what I can.

Thanks again!

Hi,

Just managed to remove the HDD. It is in perfect working condition. I used a CLONE HDD and the outcome is the same.

It is probably the voltage. I will try to open it one more time and check the voltage.

After running the TEST MODE 27, error is CD MEM 18( HDD access error).

HDD has been cloned and I have the image in case someone need it.

Hello!

I would like to clone my HDD in  my BeoSound 3200 as a precautionary measure so that I can move this image along to a new HDD when I need to install a new HDD.

Which piece of software did you use please? When I connect it to my computer via a USB cradle it does not mount. Probably doesn't recognise the format (I have tried on Mac and Windows). So, was wondering if you could guide me as to the approach you took? Software used etc.

Many thanks, BeoMedia

Hi 11048437, This might be a long shot, but do you still have that HDD image for the Beosound 3200 saved somewhere? My HDD has just died. Thanks

Hello,

I have been looking into cloning my HDD as a precautionary measure. I’ve found a cloning device but it was for SATA drives and the one in BeoSound 3200 is IDE. However with IDE to SATA converters I managed to clone the drive perfectly yesterday.

However, when I fit the cloned drive into BeoSound 3200 and try to play it it displays “HDD LOCK”.

I then looked into more detail of the drives. The original (and cloned) has 5 virtual drives on the HDD. One for each color and a fifth one. The clone has the correct serial number for these virtual drives. (I could look at the drive that would mount in WinXP. Could even play the music files but as I didn’t have the right codecs it sounded awful).

Long story short, I suspect the music hardware looks at the hardware serial of the drive and will only play if it matches. This is probably why my clone won’t play.

As it looks we will need to find a way to change the hardware serial of the IDE hard disk to the one that was originally in the caddy.

Does anyone know how to do this?

If so I suspect any BeoSound 3200 can use any clone drive out there once the serial has been changed to the original one.

If anyone knows how to change the hardware serial please share.

Hi Beomedia,

Did you clone your Beosound 3200 hard drive to a different type of hard drive? or from IDE 40 gig to IDE 40 gig? Yes from what i've been reading the serial number of the hard drive seems to be the biggest issue. The hard drive serial number changers I've seen on the internet all seem to change the serial number temporarily by means of software. Is this your conclusion? I would really love to replace my hard drive with something newer, maybe even bigger capacity but at the moment I cant even get my hard drive to start again, so I cant even clone it.

Hi Bigbruggsy,

I actually cloned it to two other drives. One being 100GB the other 60GB I think. I wanted to rule out if the "HDD LOCK" was due to a specific brand of hard disk or similar. But unfortunately both new clones triggered the same error message. Once I get them to work I am pretty sure the BS3200 will be able to make use of the increased storage.

If we can manage to solve the issue with changing the hardware serial of the hard disk I can clone a hard disk for you. I think you should be able to read your hardware serial from the label and add this to the clone (provided we can change the hardware serial).

Alternatively, if we can get hold of the software from Bang & Olufsen they used to replace caddy and hard disk we might be able to change the hard disk hardware serial number in the caddy (which has an USB port) so that will accept your new hard drive?

In short - we need to change this hardware serial in either the caddy or the hard disk.

Perhaps you could have your hard disk restored professionally, that way the serial should match?

Hi Beomedia,

My HDD is making a clicking sound, I thought I might of had a stuck header so I opened it up but sadly this wasn't the case. I've just bought today a used HDD (exact same model) and I'll move over the internal components apart from the cylinders, from what I've read the serial number is saved on the cylinders so hopefully I might be able to get my old hard drive running again. At the moment I don't even know what my serial number is as I cant get the HDD to work at all.

You're right, maybe we can get the B&O software, I noticed that small usb port when I took the hard drive caddy out. I've asked my local B&O tech but he doesn't have the software. Maybe someone on here does?

I found the service manual for the service tool kit and new hdd with codec. Shows more detail of the procedure.
