Hi folks,

My newly acquired Beogram 6500 doesn't seem to have a level platter...it seems very low at the front and I can't seem to change this to being a constant level all round by adjusting the screws as detailed in the service manual.Does anyone have any advice on how to fix this? Many thanks for your help.

Hi Martin,

Thank you for the suggestion..yes they are all released. I tightened them to transport the turntable when I collected it last week,so I just double checked I had undone them fully...and I have. The turntable revolves freely, but with no LP on platter I noticed that it was lower at the front.

Can you feel the springs in effect when you press down on the platter?
Also in the front - or does it feel solid in the front?

Hi. I’ve just tried and it’s definitely a very, very short travel compared with the sides and back in the respect of springiness. I did wonder if perhaps it hasn’t freed itself totally from the locking screw for travel. Should I open up and look?

The transport screws are completely lose when losened = "rattling".
If not rattling they aren't losened completely or something else is wrong that will have to be checked inside.
It's not uncommon to find stray objects, a needle brush or even an old cartridge that have fallen down into the deck, and these things can often get in the way. I have also found keys, finger rings and coins etc.
Even remains of the decks old, hardened and broken rubber feet can mess things up in there.

How high is it front and back?
The platter should be 1mm or so above the surrounding surface.

Hi again Martin

Yes they’re now rattling-good description. The platter was high 2/3 mm at right (looking from front ) about 1 mm front and probably 2 mm left and back. Definitely skewed down and forward, and higher to right than anywhere else. Front Transport screw was least easy to get free totally as in it took ages! Maybe a gentle exploration might find what’s amiss. I’ll dig out manual online and open carefully.

Hi Martin

Update. I opened it up and the inside is extremely clean and dust free for starters. It looks like it’s been rarely subjected to pollution and dust! Anyway after some fiddling to adjust height of platter (and it seems more level now), I decided to set it up and add cartridge/stylus and to my great pleasure it played without any hitches. Thank you for your suggestions once more.
