Hi

I have a Beoplay S8 with the surround ports - front, rear and center. But how do I find out if these ports are active and working so I can actually use it for surround sound? Smile

Can I somehow identity the version of the S8 and from that see if its a version that works with all ports or only 2.1 setup?

Hi Anders,

Most likely they are all there. But to make sure, you can do the following:

-Connect your source with a cable to both front and rear input. You need two cables for this.

So you are connecting left channel to front, and right channel to rear. This will leave you with two plugs that are not connected to anything on the source end.

-Connect one speaker to the front left channel output and one speaker to the rear right channel output.

If this gives you sound in both speakers, it kinda confirms that all amps are running.

I have sent you an email, so check your spam folder (beoworld emails usually end up there)

My source at the moment is a B&O connection hub (trying to get rid of it though). How do I connect the Connection Hub with two cables in the PowerLink front and rear input in the S8 (RJ45)?

And where can I buy an extra Power link cable - in B&O stores or just online?

If you have bought the S8 combo with the Connection Hub, you can be pretty sure that it is the 2.1 version.

Only the first ones (sold without the hub) had all amps/connections activated.

The hub can not be your source...it is a bridge between another device (mostly a non-B&O tv) and the 2.1/S8 set.

You don’t need a second cable in that case.

Should you ever need more, they are available at any B&O dealer (probably also online) or from Steve@SoundsHeavenly - they are regular RJ45/PL cables.

Here is a link to how you use the set with the hub - hope that helps

Should you however, have the version with all connections active, please report back as for what you want to connect to the hub or what you aim at doing without the hub.

I have the version of the S8 where I had to buy the Hub as a separate products when it got available. And have all the ports (front, rear and center) in the S8 subwoofer. And pretty sure I bought it in the early days of the S8. So might be luck to have a version that works with surround.

At the moment I want to test if the S8 do have all amps or not. The most easy way to test that? With or without the connection hub.

In the near future, I want to get rid of the connection hub as it has a high pitch standby noise (have returned the product 3+ times). Near future will be a setup without surround. Only 2.1 setup. I want to have my Sony TV connected and my airport express (used for Airplay 2). So two sources. What is the way to get this connected to the S8 - without the connection hub?

So I tested my S8 with an extra input (into the rear input) with and extra jack-to-RJ45 cable and an iPhone. Moved one speaker to rear right output. Had Tv sound in left speaker and had iPhone music in right speaker. So both rear and front works. So can I assume that center will works as well or can I test that the same way?

Any thoughts/ideas of how to get rid of the connection hub while still having tv connected and Airplay 2 (using an Apple Airport express or similar)?

You can test this with the front input/output also.

Post a picture of the bottom of the subwoofer.

If you are using an Apple TV for EVERYTHING on your tv, you can use a Airport express with 3,5mm out to the S8.

Just set the Apple TV to play sound through airplay to the express Big Smile

I clearly would suppose, that then ALL inputs will work.

Just test it - if active, you’ll hear sound.

If your main source is the ATV, just do as Leo suggested.

If you want sound from multiple sources (tv etc...), there is no way around some kind of preprocessor/preamp/AV-receiver.

If you aim at using the S8 for multichannel aka surround sound, you must have the patch cable (one of those, that came with the BL14-4/5).

This connects the outputs of the preamp/AV-receiver to the S8 sub part.

Here is a link to a thread discussung this kind of setup:

Using Chrome cast on my TV's, so would be best without an Apple TV. So others can stream as well if they don't have Apple products :)

I’m pretty sure that you can stream picture to chromecast and sound to chromecast audio. (If you can get one) ((I have an extra))

I have a PlayStation 5 connected to the TV as well. So Apple Tv is not an option as I want the sound from both watching tv and playing PS5 on the S8 speakers.

I have seen a product called Almondo. Is that a direction to go? Or would a audio/video receiver be a better option?

Buy a proper Atmos receiver instead.

Then you can run 5.1 first, and expand in the future.

I got a Denon x4500h (11.2 channels), and I have been super-satisfied with it.

If I'm going for a Denon, then what cable do I need to connect the S8 and the receiver? Read something about a D-sub cable but not sure it exist anymore. What did you do for connecting it?

You can use RJ45-RCA cables.

The S8 can receive line-signals this way.

Or you can use the D-sub cable from the amplifier section of the receiver.

Whatever floats your boat.

I gave a D-she b cable lying around if you want to go that route.

The cheapest way to go is to buy any old 5.1 receiver and use the D-sub cable.

The expensive way is to buy an Atmos receiver with pre-outs. This will give you things like airplay, Spotify connect, 4K/8K hdmi.

Considering you have a PS5, I think you might want to go the expensive route.

Unless you are gaming on a hd-ready tv Stick out tongue
