Hi. I am trying to figure out the best way to connect my devices together. Let me first state that I am no sound/video expert, which is why I ask for assistance with what might seem simple to some.

First of all here are my items:

  • Beolab 18*2 connected wirelessly
  • Beolab 19 connected wirelessly
  • Beosound core
  • Beosound Essence MKIIe
  • AppleTV
  • Xbox X (doesn’t have Bluetooth)
  • Spotify on iphone
  • Projector

Originally, B&O installed the system and connected it to AppleTV via Airplay. Later on, this suddenly stopped working so now I just connect via regular Bluetooth which is annoying since I have to actuively connect every time (after for instance using cellphone for music).

Recently I also got my hands on an XboxX and since it doesn’t have Bluetooth I am forced to finally connect things properly.

After a bit of online research here is the solution I am looking at:

Buy a HDMIswitch will builtin TOSLink sound separation such as https://www.amazon.com/Switcher-Optical-TOSLINK-Function-Wireless/dp/B07G46V5N4

I will then connect the Xbox and AppleTV as HDMIinputs, connect the projector as HDMI output, and the Beosound core as TOSLink output. This should allow me to continue using Bluetooth for spotify connection, which having cabled connection to both appleTV and XboX.

So

Question 1: Have I missed something?

Question 2: is if what Xbox support calles TOSLink (https://support.xbox.com/en-US/help/xbox-360/console/connect-sound-system) is the same as what B&O calles optical out connection (https://archivedforum2.beoworld.org/forums/t/35225.aspx).

Question 3: Assuming the answer to question 2 is yes, is this the type of cable needed? https://no.rs-online.com/web/p/optical-cables/1924507/?cm_mmc=NO-PLA-DS3A-_-google-_-CSS_NO_NO_Cables_%26_Wires_Whoop-_-(NO:Whoop!)+Optical+Cables-_-1924507&matchtype=&pla-327040999826&gclid=CjwKCAjwndCKBhAkEiwAgSDKQd5pNOLNbpzb3MSP2kqDPlHxG0mAS598g-_lcKvwiMozdcoiAf4VfRoCbYoQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Thanks a lot in advance.

The optical in on the Core will probably cause a delay, when you play from the video sources - but you should be able to correct for this in the settings of the Core by turning off Beolink (which you don’t need).

https://support.bang-olufsen.com/hc/en-us/articles/360041419912-How-do-I-make-settings-for-Line-in-sources-in-the-Bang-Olufsen-app-

(For what is the Essence in your setup?).

Why would you want to use bluetooth for Spotify - the Core has support for Spotify Connect…..just use that.

There is a tv - and there is a BV

Hi, and thanks for your response. When I bought the B&O system the sales rep told me the Essence was needed to send the wireless signal from the Core to the speakers if I recall.

I also notice now that the Core has what looks like an Aux in, but a optical out. Do I have to use aux to get signal from the HDMI sounces into the core?

I have the feeling that what you call an Essence is in fact a Transmitter 1 (TR1)

Your Core must be connected to the TR1 via a Powerlink cable (an Ethernet cable) and the TR1 transmits the Core sound wireless to your speakers, is it correct?

What kind of TV do you have?

Wow, I think you are absolutely right. For some reason I found images of the essence that looked like it when I googled.

I dont have a TV, just a Epson EH-TW56500 projector utilizing the hdmi input.

Makes more sense :-)

You could leverage the TR 1 to have more sound input like:

Core --> Powerlink --> TR1 PL1 Input for music (Airplay, Spotify Connect, TuneIN) and avoid Bluetooth

Apple TV / XBOX --> HDMI --> Epson --> mini-Jack to RCA --> TR 1 RCA input for video sources that would output the sound via the Epson line-out

NOTE:

1 - You need to be sure that you can control the volume of what goes into the TR1 RCA, which normally should be OK (Apple TV remote, XBOX (I don't know)

2 - PL1 port has priority on RCA In, so you would have to stop the Core music streaming to hear what goes through the RCA , should not be a big deal.
