Suddenly my Moment tablet has a non-responsive flickering screen only after 2 years of use. Told it needs replacing and a very common problem. Astounded at the rate of failure. Most unreliable electronics I’ve ever bought.

Is the premature death of this related to the lack of earthing on the Moment?

B&O have released an earthing kit for this terrible product:

Oh dear, sorry about that

Not sure I’d spend too much getting it sorted, unless you really like it when it works

Selling mine 18 months ago was a very happy day in my case

Good luck!

B&o should do one thing: make the basic settings available (http) so the unit can still be setup (and used) if the tablet fails definitely.

Note: this is the official mains of a Moment. I never used the cable because my Moment is always been LAN connected.

So for 6 years now it works without earthing kit. But the tablet is not used a lot anymore as the Moment is nowadays mostly used in a Core-like way.

Forgive my electrical ignorance. So if it’s connected to your network with a LAN cable, then an earthing is present and no earthing kit is required? Does this mean the tablet dying can’t be blamed on lack of earthing but simply poor quality of the unit leading you premature death…

I prefer to connect if possible my devices by cable to my network. Thus the provided mains was not usable for my setup.

So have I been lucky or has the "LAN earthing" in my case been sufficient that's the question. I do not have sufficient info and knowledge about the complete unit to answer this question though.

maybe others can shed some light on the issue.

By the way, you have done a manually reset of the tablet already?

Bought the moment the day it was made available in Greece, I think 4 maybe 5 years ago. Since then the screen has died on me twice. Don't think that is an issue with grounding. My humble opinion is that it is badly designed. I agree with Carolpa (as usualWink) that Bang&Olufsen must consider very seriously to "open" the software not just for making it possible to use the moment tabletless but maybe to be able to run the Bang&Olufsen app or even better the Beoliving app but this is a totally different discussion.

I actually love the BS moment. I have 2 devices. I have a BS moment in Mallorca. I took the tablet off and put it in the closet. When I came back after 1 year the screen stayed dark. I had the battery changed and I was told that it was the mainboard. It was sent to Denmark and repaired (approx. € 700.00) with a battery change. Now it's still in the workshop in Palma. I'll pick it up the next time I visit.

Let me get this correct; your tablet died doing nothing, switched off, in warm dry closest after a year? That is the most unusual thing I’ve ever heard. Electronics is not stressed when it’s switched off and lying idle. That is concerning.

it is exactly like that. It was in the closet, without electricity. Well, we sometimes have very high humidity on Mallorca. But I have a different assumption. I believe mistakes were made when changing the battery. Of course I can't prove that. Why was the system sent to Denmark and repaired there ?! I suspect the workshop was overwhelmed with the device on Mallorca.

Im not an electronics expert - so just an entertaining opinion.

I assume this will be a low voltage product and therefore I doubt it is an earthing problem?

I suspect that this is a relatively cheap generic tablet wrapped-up in a cool B&O shell to make the product cost-effective? I think you are seeing a simple MTBF issue which you are on the perceived low-end of that failure rate.

Look at it another way. I believe I see that the MTBF on all my families iPad minis (Mk3 or 4 - not on 5 yet) of 2.5 to 3.5 years.  This is not a niche product with multitudes of units sold compared to B&O's tablets. It does not make it necessarily better despite higher critique and units sold.

This is probably an accurate analysis and a seismic shift from B&O of old. Look at the internals of Beograd CD7000. Build quality, PCBs, mechanism, discrete quality components, still is use 30+ years with a little care. Puts you right off their newer stuff.

From what I hear, old B&O stuff used to fail very regularly. I think the difference is that it could be easily and cost-effectively repaired as it was a custom electronics PCB with age-old components (wheels, springs, levers, capacitors, switches etc....), all cleverly put together to look futuristic, slimline and modern.

Unfortunately, modern digital circuits (boards) are now generic and manufactured in batches before being superseded in designed-in obsolescence. They are never the same from one model to the next and can rarely be retrofitted. once the manufacturing run is done....that is it. EOL unless you have a very cleaver person who knows how to jimmy a digital PCB to make it work longer.

Naim have built a reputation of being able to repair and service nearly everything they ever made (except CD players). Shame B&O haven’t developed a profitable and admirable setup like them. B&O reputation would be more exalted if they did.

What should give you an icy chill down your spine will be the day you and I have to have those two fat ladies looked at. I hope and pray that is in 50 years time when Im dead or at best deaf.

Imagine if that little unsurprising circuit board atop of those speakers which controls the whizzy LED lights for volume fail and it takes down the whole system?

Would that not be fun at all?

I had the same issue with flickering screen, managed to get it starting again by draining the battery completely and the charging it again. You could also shut it down manually by inserting a pin in the hole, hole is up to the right next to the base connector if you have the screen facing up. Insert at pin for about 3 seconds and the device turns off. However mine is still in need of a forced firmware update, which needs to be carried out by a service technician and those are harder to find where I live - hate sending it away.
