Hi Guys,

I was given a BEO6 in gold finish and in aesthetically perfect condition.

BUT,

The battery is dead and there is no docking station.

I did find some spare battery modules not that expensive, to replace the original ones who add a leak (which fortunately doesn't seem to have corrode the main PCB).

Lets say I can replace the battery and the remote start up, do someone know how the charge the battery without the dock, like connecting any power supply to pin X and pin XX in the base and… It will work! (beo6 base are very expensive on eBay).

Finally, as I dont have a base, I suppose I won't be able to customize the control it can handle? Is it true or is it any "learning" mode who dont need software and connection?

Thank you all for your help. I jut hate to have perfectly looking object, not working internally. It's beyond my understanding that when the container is fine the content is faulty. I know, I live in the wrong time Big Smile

Well, This morning I powered the remote with two 1.2v batteries.

And… Nothing happened: the display remained irremediably black and the IR blaster didn't show any kind of activity.

So long for the Beo6 experience.

Cheers!

It is not 100% a write off, but to get it working, you need the base.

Where are you located ?

Ok, a bit far from Denmark :)

But, you need to buy a new batterypack and get a base and the config tool, and it will 98% come back to life after some magic :)

Sadly yes, too far!

I teared appart the beo6 this morning and swap the battery pack with equivalent power (2x1,2v, a little stronger mA) hoping for the remote to react but nothing happened.

Do you believe the adding the base will sort of awake the remote more than just new power in it?

Thank you for your help.

What is happening, is that the Beo6 with probably older firmware, will not come to life if it runs out of battery. It is a known error.

If it is connected via the base to a computer with the config tool, it is possible to force it back to life with different versions of the config tool.

Without the config tool and base, you will not get it back to life.

Thank you Weebyx,

I'm gonna order new battery cells and then just wait to find a base.
In the meantime I'll do some search about links and precautions for the Config tool.
I think I've read they are some bugs and complications with very last version of it.

Anyway, thats another question: Thank you again, that would be sad to have that fancy piece just used as paperweight!

Weird.

Can you try replacing ".negro" with the dot include with "43" all attached?

Good morning Guys,

Some news about the Beo6!

First I want to thank Weebyx for his hopeful help and advices and Mike Muller for his kind offer two posts above.

So! Yestreday I received in my mailbox, direct from Switzerland, not only a Beo5 Dock and charger but also a Beo6 in Silver finish.

It allowed me to confirm that my first remote is actually Gold. So far I've found it "Goldish" so I wasn't sure if it was really  gold or just the aluminium who had a light yellow tint:

After checking the base and charger were delivering 5V which they are, I put the silver remote on the base for a couple of hours.

The silver remote was given as "faulty display". The Gold one problem is unknown so first thing I tried was swap the main PCB.
While the remote was open, i check the battery voltage: 1.2 v which is alf the power needed. Anyway, I assumed that little tension and the dock while made the remote start if it should. But nothing happened!

I'm not worried still as Weebyx already warned me about the deep sleep issue when the battery is too much discharged.

Next I tried to plug it to my computer (MAC) but again nothing happened: no mention of any usb device on the system report.
After installing CT on a virtual Windows 8, I could start the program but it show little arrows cross marked in red which, I believe should stand for "No Communication". Is it?

I've read post about Virtualization, windows 8, 32 & 64 bits and USB3 vs USB2 but I'm not into thoses problems yet and I know it will not be simple.

I suppose next step is to replace the battery. But I'm surprise by the invisibility in the USB bus as I read about remotes which were working on the base even when the battery was dead low.

Does anybody have any suggestion something to check or try. Any help from somebody using a Mac with a virtual windows will be welcome too.

A warm thank you to anyone who will help and again to the ones who already did, very generously!

Yes, the red arrows indicate no connection to a remote.

Does windows find the remote under device manager when you dock it ? The first thing is to just leave config tool closed, and get windows to display the Beo under Device Manager. Sometimes it cannot find the driver automatically, so you just select the remote under devices and manually point driver to the BeoDriver folder under the installation path.

Hi Weebyx,

I'll try this later today. As you know, i'm on Mac, so I have to first install a virtual machine on an old Laptop to avoid the USB 3.0 issue I read about.

So far I've tried on a virtual Windows 8.1, with the Keith Saunders workaround about "Driver Signature Enforcement" but on a USB 3.0 laptop and without any success.

Of course all tips and tricks about Windows Use are more than welcome.

Ok, I've installed a fresh new Win XP on an USB 2.0 (Mac) Laptop. I've tried to explore de Device Manager without any luck (please see screenshot below). Tried to Install CT 5.12 to see what happen but nothing happened.

One question thought, because I have not replaced the battery yet: Does the battery be healthy when the remote is docked and the USB power supply will power the electronics or do I need to replace the battery first thing first? The battery is 1.2 V over the 2.4 by design.

Thanks.

Something happened !!! Lets have a Party !!!

I teared appart the Beo6 in four part: screen, PCB, dock connector and battery and i fueled the PCB with 2AA batteries (again!), connected all things and docked the connector to the base. As soon as I connected it to the Mac it showed up in the Mac Device Manager equivalent.

Then I tried on my virtuel win XP where it show up too, was able to install driver with the Weebyx method above…
And, Voilà ! the arrows in the CT windows loose their red cross!

Registered the remote, created a new zone and added a new device. Uploaded to the remote in CT 5.12.

Thats where I'm stuck now. It did send some data but stop on the "Writing Wifi Firmware" and get stuck there for more than 30 min (yet knowing old laptop and virtualization is slowing down everything).

Any advice? Thanks

The WiFi update is only 8KB or something if I remember, but it can take a very long time(I have seen more than 30 minutes on a "real" windows pc). If the battery for the remote is not fully charged, it might fail because of low battery, but it will say so in the config tool.

If the screen came to life when you did the update with tool 5.12, I would try with 6.00 and do the update again.

What I usually do with these remotes, is that I have a new batterypack(created by my self from a old not working), that I have in a working remote with loose keyboard so I can change the battery pack quick. This remote is used just for charging the battery pack used in the remotes I get to life :)

I was going to write "unfortunately the screen didn't came to life"…

BUT

Here is what I noticed this morning!

The screen showed this message and even the remote keys illuminates.
But we're not done yet! The wifi update taking forever I stopped the process, installed CT 6.00 and tried to send an new config to the remote.
At the second step I get the "Low Battery" alert! After fully charging the batteries I get the message again. The black batteries are 2450 mAh versus the 1200 mAh from the original pack so I assume the batteries are not actually low.

Update!

Somebody lend me a Thinkpad with Windows XP on it. I was able to connect the remote and start CT 5.12.

But the upload to the remote get stuck at the same step "Wifi…". I let the computer for more than 60 min but nothing happened.

I swapped the PCBs and tried the process again and it get stuck again, same step.

Is there some electronic into the screen which can cause some communication troubles?

Or is it something special to do into CT? Is the serial number you enter to create a remote relevant (IE, need to match the PCB number or something).

Thank you.

Thank you marexy!

What I've learned so far:

Part of the electronic including the main "brain" must be in the display part. As you know I have two remotes a Silver and a Gold. The silver one is known as Faulty Display. When I connect it, the display show two zones, USB in blue and the bottom buttons. But the screen is unresponsive.

When I connect the Gold one, it shows "No valid configuration". When I swap the displays, the messages follows the screen, no matter what main PCB (keyboard) I use.

So to me, solution is in setting up the gold one but I can't because of the above issue: CT 5.12 get stuck at wifi config step, CT 6.00 dont upload to the remote because of a Low Batt alert.

So I believe that the problem may come from the remote being powered not enough; But I can't understand it as i checked voltage and it was 2.5 volts and the cells are rated the double mAh than the original battery and f course fully charged.

Any hints?

I give up!

After more than an hour and a half on a true PC, CT 5.12 is still updating Wifi Firmware. I aborted the update.

Other CT stop at the BeoLO step claiming battery is too low.

I've ordered 2 4/5AA 1300mAh cells to build an internal battery, they should be there next week. We'll see then.

Thanks to anyone who helped so far.

Try with the latest config tool (6.84) instead of 5.12. It seems that this WiFi update is troublesome, but it needs a good charged battery pack, that is my experience.

Give it a go with 6.84, it that fails, try 6.62 and then back to 6.0 :) You need patience and the different version of the config tool depending on which tool has done the last update in the Beo6. There are som weird differnces :)

Hi Weebyx,

Tant you for your support. I have put the original battery pack which came with the silver remote to charge overnight. This morning it was checked at 2,5v.
I'll try a new update with CT 6.84 as suggested and let you know. If it dont work I'll wait until next week and try again with new fresh cells.

A couple of question if I may:
- Can the 'No valid configuration" message be a symptom of another problem. I mean, did you already see it when you knew the remote had no other problems?

- How difficult would it be to dismantle the display.: separate the screen from the main PCB. Because I was able to turn ON the silver remote, see 2 zones, navigate into the setup menu and even choose my local wifi network. Just the screen is unresponsive (as expected).

Anyway, I keep faith that problems will solve with new batteries. I'm just confused about how sensitive the system is to very light variations.

I tried again and had the same message "Battery too low". Battery is checked at 2.6 volts.

I'm not too much into volts and amperes but because the silver remote also turn of because of low battery I would assume than its the mA that are weak.
I had the same issue with a BS3 power supply which did have the required 15V but just a quarter of mA, so the unit turn on and off the second after.

Only thing that still bothers me is that I'm unable to even enter setting mode with that one. Only 'No valid configuration" message.

Now hope the new cells will solve the problem!

Enjoy your day.

"No valid configuration" will do that the remote is totally unresponsive, that is normal.

Wait for the new battery pack, and do a complete 24hour charge of that battery. You cannot use "the battery is checked" for anything in these remotes. They are bad designed, and can think that the battery is bad even though it is fully charged.

I have had remotes that needed many times of a fully charged battery, and upload of FW/WiFi/configuration before it came back to life.

Off course, it is also possible that it is actually faulty, but I dont think so.

I bought 10 "faulty and dead" units at some point from my dealer. All of them came back to life with new batteries and the latest firmware.

Hi Matador, Weebyx,

I don't own a Beo5/Beo6 remote but just a shout out that this is the best thread since a long time. It is very enjoyable to read and I take my hat off for your persistence (Matador) and help (Weebyx). It reads like a novel you just don't want to put away.

Looking forward to the next updates.

Hi Weebyx.

I love your answers: always full of hope! Thank you.

I'll wait for the new battery pack and will try again then.

Looks like my story with B&O is only about wait lately:
- Wait for BEO6 battery cells,
- Wait for BS3 power supply,
- Wait for Beocord belts.

I'll keep you updated.

Hi Guys,

Today, is not a good day for B&O servicing Sad.

After more than overnight charging, the remote is still stuck in WIFI firmware in CT 5.12 for one hour now.
I've tried just before with CT 6.84 but I ended up with the same "battery too low" alert.

Dont know what to think…

Hi Weebyx,

I've tried to install CT 6.00 but it would not pass the Log/Pass window. Didn't try 6.62, maybe I should.
I also wonder if it's not confusing for the computer to install/remove/install/remove various version of CT's. Do the install/remove performed "cleanly"?

It's weird because it happened with the two remotes the same way and I've not find any report of a "known" problem (i.e common enough to affect two remotes from different origin) with those symptoms.

Following one of your post, I also think about swapping the white ribbon cables between keyboards and screen, they dont look damaged but one is heavily folded and, I dont know, maybe it worth a try.

Another solution I thought, but I need some acknowledgment on that one, is to fuel the remote with a 3.7V, power adapter from a phone to see if it works!
But I understand it's like nailing a screw with a wrench so I'll wait a bit until there's no better trick.

(By the way, CT is still updating Wifi Firmware – 1H30 now – and windows says "program executing…)

It uninstalls fine, You can try different versions without issues. The log/pass window, you should just click "work offline"

The problem is 99% not the batteries. It is some combination that is making troubles. I also doubt it is the ribbon cable, but then again, I had an issue at some point with the backlight that was caused by the ribbon cable.

Have you tried different USB ports on the laptop ?

Weirdly, in CT 6.00 checking the offline box didn't do nothing and I was unable to launch the program. I'll try again, maybe it was just long to load.

I think I've tried different usb ports but to be honest, i've lost count on what I tried and not.

I'll will change the usb port and install 6.00 again.

Thanks.

Weebyx,

I've installed CT 6.00 and changed the USB port (it then detected new material and installed beo5 driver).

But unfortunately the same problem remains. "Battery too low"…
