Hi, is there an easy way to clean the silent contacts, without completely stripping the mechanism?

I dont think so, on my BG1202 I had to dismantle the swinging chassis to get at contacts, look here

Hi, looking through your method to clean the contacts seems very complicated. I'm probably being stupid, but if the two rivets holding the silent contact fitting were drilled out, would it be possible to slide it out, clean the contacts, reinstall, then refix with bolts or fresh rivets?

Those 2 rivets are the ground contact.

Practically, it should be possible to slide it out, as you say, and then realign it exactly, when you bolt it in again.

I've never gone to such extremes to clean the contacts, usually, I just use Kontakt 60 contact cleaner spray, which does the job nicely.

I have successfully removed the contacts and then simply bolted back. It is fiddly, but can be done. You need some bendy tools to hold the bolts in place while you screw the nut back on!
