Beacom 2000 in Beautiful Red from 1986 needs help. . .

I own many B+O speakers but as far as phones I am an Iphone 5 guy. Last week my friend gave me his original Beacom 2000 in red, I love it! I want to be able to plug it in and have it as a standard land line here in the US. I like the idea of in an emergency I have a none battery phone. One problem is he is german and when I plug it in I get no dial tone etc. . . I really want this phone, I am looking for help from someone who would know how to fix/retro fit the phone.
