I recently picked up an RX-2, and everything seems to work except the tonearm isn't descending onto the record after I hit play. (MMC3 pickup installed.) The arm just swings over on top of it and hovers in the "cue" position.

Any ideas how to get the pickup to descend onto the record?

Are your transport screws loosened, are the pickup counterweight correct adjusted?

Yes. All of the transport screws are down and the clips turned to cover the tops of the screw-heads, and the counterweight is set at 1.2g for the MMC3 cartridge.

It sounds as if you need to calibrate the tone arm.  Just because you have it set for 1.2 grams tracking force doesn't mean it's applying this - they easily get out of whack.  Instructions on how to do this are in the user manual.  If you don't have one you can upgrade your membership to silver or gold and obtain one here on Beoworld.

The clips has be positioned so the screws can move free up and down, NOT covering the screw heads. Did you adjust the "0" balance before setting the 1.2 gr on the counter weight. Check this adjustment

If OK, check if the piece, where the lower end of screw L touches, moves downward when the arm reaches the the record, after start, If not, you will have to open the deck and check the mechanism for the arm, at the arm pivot shaft there is a shaft and bushing that has to be clean and well lubricated.

Clean and lub everything and check the mechanism for broken or missing parts, move the camwheel 1609 by hand to see if the lift works.

Thanks for your help. Fixing it looked above my paygrade, so I took it to a guy who judging by the stuff on his shelves his shop fixes all the B&O gear in ATL (Modular Electronics/Amina Audio). Ended up having a cracked gear and needing a new belt. Price to fix it was reasonable IMO - at any rate, probably cheaper than it would've been had I made a mess in there and took it in thereafter! - and now it works.

Man, all these years of digital is going to make me a fanatic about record cleaning, though. My system's fairly high resolution (Rane phono preamp, Anthem pre/pro, ATI amp, TAD-Pioneer EX stereo speakers, multiple subwoofers) and the noise floor of vinyl is a bit disconcerting.
