I have a V1 - 40, (with which I'm mightily impressed), but I don't know how to connect more than one SPDIF input. I'm already using the only one for a MacMini, (DVD & Internet). Does the latest HDMI spec include sound? If not, how can I 'daisy chain' STB's? I'm thinking about a Blu-ray player.
HDMI does include Sound as well.Since many years...
No Need for an etra SPDIF cable.

Hi,
Just use the HDMI as this will carry sound as well to the V1
I did the sound design using a Mac Mini and only an HDMI connection to the V1 - no need for the S/P-DIF. Admittedly, my software was a little weird, but the V1 just sees the 7.1 audio channels coming in on HDMI from the Mac.
One thing to look at is whether your Mac is set to send 7.1 or 2.0 on the HDMI output. Set it to 7.1 (in the Audio MIDI Setup app), otherwise the Mac will be downmixing and the V1 will be upmixing your surround materials. On the other hand, if you're using iTunes on the Mac, and it's sending a 7.1 stream, the V1 will think it's getting a surround signal and it won't upmix to surround.
If you don't have a surround system, you don't have to worry too much about that last paragraph - unless you want to compare Apple's downmixer to B&O's.
Cheers

Thanks for all your replies, it's appreciated. I didn't try the Mini without using SPDIF because I understood that DV out, (which is output from the Mac - I use a DV - > HDMI adapter to go to the V1). In which case, what's the point of having the SPDIF on the V1 and the optical/ 3.5mm output on the Mac? If it's just for CDs, it seems a bit OTT.
Hmmm.... sounds to me like you have an older Mac Mini - from a time before they started having an HDMI output.
If you're using a DVI-to-HDMI adapter, you will not get audio through, so your S/P-DIF is your best option.
If you have a Mac Mini with a Mini Display Port output, then you can get an adapter for that to HDMI, and you will get 7.1 audio through it.
Apologies all, after "....understood DV out" I should've put " doesn't include audio". I assume with a more modern HDMI device, (I'm considering a Blu-ray player), it will all happen as soon as I select the source on the remote?
HDMI includes a "handshake" when you connect things. So, your V1 will "tell" your Blu-ray player what formats of audio it can accept, and the Blu-ray will deliver what the V1 needs.
So, basically, connect your Blu-ray player to the V1 with an HDMI cable, and it'll just work. The V1 will tell the Blu-ray player to send 7.1 PCM and, if your V1 is in anything but the "custom" Sound Mode, it will automatically upmix or downmix to your speakers that you're using (according to which Speaker Group you're using) for you.
Hi Geoff,
"...The V1 will tell the Blu-ray player to send 7.1 PCM..."
Is that for sure?
I have alway learned that, if you play a DTS-HDMaster audio track on a Blu-ray player, and you send this bitstream/untouched to a device, which can not decode the HD-stream, the BRP will degrade the stream to the 'core track' which is lossy.
This way you won't get a PCM-signal, but a (lousy) lossy, plain, original DTS track!
That is why I always recommend letting the BRP decode the sound - and then send it as PCM to the BV.
(At least until the BV's gets HD-capable decoders).
Should this really be different with the V1/BV11/BSys4???
Please read the wiki about DTS DH Master Audio:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DTS-HD_Master_Audio
You can read more in depth about this at many places - I don't have the links at hand right now.
With Dolby TrueHD it is a bit different (I know) - it does not have a 'core track'.
If what you wrote is true, the V1/BV11/BSys4 should (through the HDMI cable) send a request to the decoder of the BRP asking it to change the settings to send the PCM decoded stream to the BV.
Never heard anything like that
Please clarify.
Greetings Millemissen
There is a tv - and there is a BV
I think you're both right. I was told to get the signal over to PCM to get full channel selection, rather than bitstream, but have to select that with the bluray player setup. If Geoff would bite, I would like to know which products will play 24bit pcm tracks without downscaling.
We can't both be right.
Either we manually have 'to tell' the decoder in the BRP to decode all audio to PCM, or (as Geoff says) the V1 'tells' the BRP decoder automatically to do it.

Lol, you sent the ToneMeister for B&O links to read on DTS audio? Pretty sure he has this covered.... He did in fact design the sound engine for the newer chassis after all. If Geoff says it can happen, I would say it happens then.
Ah, you know... A little B&O here, a little there
C'mon BeoMegaMan,
I am sure Geoff will answer the question himself, when he gets the time.
Grrr! Millemissen

My Bluray has a software "toggle" for bitstream vs pcm. See no way anyone's TV could override consistently across brand platforms, but that doesn't mean they can't.
