Hey folks!
I've only just joined the forum, so I hope I'm posting in the right place....!
I'll start by saying thanks to everyone who's posts I've read over the last few years, unwittingly solving any B&O issues of mine which have cropped up! I'm looking forward to getting involved more now I have set up a profile!
Right, on with my issues...
I just bought a job lot of 5500/5000 series units. all of which have some issues. I won't put all the problems in this one post, but will undoubtedly be posting quite a few questions over the next week or so!
I'll start with my main concern... the Beogram (record) 5500 with MMC4.
When I place a record on the plate and press play, all seems well. The light on the arm indicating the rotation speed comes alive, the plate turns, and the arm moves to the start of the record where the arm drops as it should.
However, thats where it stays. It simply skips continuously in the first groove. This happens no matter the weighting of the arm, which I understand should be 1.2 for the MMC4.
I've tried several records, all the same.
ALSO.... the sound is both quiet, and heavily broken and distorted, which I gues sounds like it should be the stylus is shot? The stylus looks to be good, but I'm no expert.
If the stylus is shot, could that amount the the whole problem of the arm not tracking, or could it be a combination of things...?
I'm hopefully borrowing another MMC4 from a friend to test, but as his table is not working, I won't actually know if that stylus is working either. So unless it just works with his on it, I'll be none the wiser...!
Any help or pointers here will be greatly appreciated indeed!

Sounds like a bad - or very dirty stylus.Yes, it can cause bad tracking and it will definitely cause distorted sound.

Well, that could be good news I suppose... Although I gues the stylus would be more expensive to replace than the deck now!!
What would be the best way to clean it, if it was in issue with dirt? What should I be looking out for?
Q-Tip dampened (not moistened) with rubbing (isopropyl) alcohol. *Gently* brush from rear to front - no other direction. Unlike a simple stylus brush, this method will remove any caked-on crud. You'd need one of these to check out the stylus condition.
