So I've invested in my first B&O speakers, a pair of BeoLab 3s. Now I don't have a B&O TV as of yet, and therein lies the rub. My various devices and consoles go into the TV, which has phono/optical fixed volume out. So I need something in-between the TV and the speakers to act as a volume control.
I'm fairly new at this whole thing, but from what I can tell, it sounds like what I need is a receiver with pre-out? Can one be bought for $400 or less?
As near as I can tell, the Marantz SR5007, which as pre-out for all channels, sells used at $499, and seems to be the cheapest solution out there (and it's well-reviewed).
Hi Hellemann,
what does 'phono/optical fixed vol out' mean?
Has the tv a digital (optical) out AND a analog (phono/RCA) out?
MM
There is a tv - and there is a BV
I would get RCA plugs to bang-olufsen speaker cable, connect them to an av adapter cable 3.5mm male to 2 x female RCA cable to the headphone socket on your tv and use the volume from there to control the speakers.
thats what i would do if i was using them with a non b&0 tv luckily, when i brought my loewe individual i also got the pre amp adapter cable which with the use of the RCA plugs to bang-olufsen cable would enable me to be able to select the active speaker option on my tv set the speakers frequency, distance and volume levels which then makes it possible to control the volume of the speakers with the tvs remote control.
or if on a budget you could look at the marantz nr1504 which has a left and right pre out.

Secondlife:B&O Playmaker?
Well that would only half-solve my problem. I'd still have to get up and cross the room to adjust the volume directly on the Playmaker. And I already have an Apple TV hooked up to the TV, so I have AirPlay.
Millemissen:what does 'phono/optical fixed vol out' mean? Has the tv a digital (optical) out AND a analog (phono/RCA) out? Yes. Both fixed volume, and no headphone port.
Yes. Both fixed volume, and no headphone port.

That looks nice. It's only slightly cheaper than the larger 5007, but it's smaller, and I like that. I would prefer to not have any boxes at all if I could.
How about this one - it's also got a trigger out, that could be used for the BL3's:

That's the smallest one I could find.
There is a second input, that could be used for a Playmaker/AirPortExpres/dockstation/Bluetooth Receiver etc.
And it has a small remote control.
So I'm down to Onkyo TX-NR708, NAD T 748 and Marantz NR1504. However, only the Onkyo has a trigger port. Now, sometimes when I'm trying to play something, my BeoLab 3s don't hear the gun, to use a RoboCop term. Then I have to go in and fiddle around in menus on the devices providing the signal and eventually it'll turn on again.
Is the trigger signal really necessary? Or should the receiver take care of it by providing a better signal to the 3s, or something like that? Using the trigger requires me to buy all new wires, including some split ones that provide the trigger signal from a non-B&O receiver, so I'm hoping the answer is no. Also, I like the way the NAD looks more than the Onkyo.
