I've noticed that the RCA connection on one speaker is quite loose compared to the other speaker.  I was thinking of upgrading them both to some nice gold-plated ones and I found this article: http://beat-net.blogspot.com.au/2012/10/beolab-8000-repair.html

My problem is this: I do not know how to remove the cone at the base of the speaker - I can't find a clip or anything.

Any suggestions?  Many thanks!

I figured it out the answer to my own question shortly after posting - it was just a small ring which is placed over the central stem.  However, I discovered that it wasn't the RCA socket which was at fault, it was the width of my cable plug.  The width of the plug was preventing it from being pushed all the way in to the socket.
