If I upgrade to a pair of beolab 5 do I need absolutely a center speaker and a subwoofer ?

The setup will be 2 bl5 and 2 bl1 as rear.

Thanks for your advices

You surely don't need a sub!

For video you will need the center - unless you want to sit in the 'sweetspot' all the time....

...and your family in a line behind you Crying

For video with 5.1 sound you will miss the center channel, if you don't have the center speaker.

For audio (stereo sources) of course you won't need it.

Some say there is a kind of phantom speaker created by the beolab 5.

Maybe it is wide enough and more than a sweetspot.

I just have read this old thread :

Interesting.

I'd suggest trying it out - to see if it works for you (and your family).

It would not be my advice.

N.B. I am aware of that thread - but I disagree.

It's not just the BL5s that can create a satisfying phantom channel. Speaker response, setup and room interaction all contribute too. But, for surround video delivered the way the mixing engineer intended, you should use a complimentary center speaker to your fronts.

You need a center speaker with that setup.

If you're going to watch any movies you'll want it.

Go for a 7.4. You'll never look back and regret that.

Thanks all for your replys.

I have to test the bl5 in place in order to see if the center is missing.

Unfortunately I tried the bl7.4 and the bl7.2 and I prefered the second.

What´s annoy me is how it will look in a rather small front space (2m60 of width).

The room is bigger than 70 square meters but the place where the tv is hanged is not wider than 2m60.
