I am going to order a recap kit for my penta II's, but just wondered if anyone had tried using them as passive speakers with a BM6500 and if the sound from the Beomasters power amp was better or worst? or the same!

I had Beovox Pentas with my 6500 system for a long time, and I was quite happy with it (especially after I recapped the crossovers). The Beomaster cannot obviously get near the volumes the Pentalabs can, but how often do you need to do that?

thanks, yes the amps are clicking away sometimes so worried that they will require overhalling at some point. And don't need the full power as I live in a flat

Did the recapping make a huge difference?

Not huge, but they did become noticeably livelier. Of course it depends on the age (and probably past use) of the speakers, but for me it was definitely worth the effort. If I did it again, I'd probably settle for regular bipolar caps instead of the expensive foil caps I used back then.

The amp in BM6500 is made with discrete components and in my opinion ahead of the hybrid IC based Beomasters/centers. There are better ones but it will certainly hold its own with most passive speakers.
