I understand DVD Avant with Dolby Digital Module fitted has two sockets for coax AC3 for the device connected to AV and Decoder Scart. I want to just use the avant as DD processor and centre speaker, with the picture being displayed by a projector and two pairs of beolab 6000 and subwoofer connected to the avant.
Is it possible to connect a source to the DD coax (i.e. bluray ), under connectionss tell the avant it is STB (SAT), then using the BEO4 press AV SAT, thereby activate the sound and DD processor but not the screen (as the picture will be HDMI to the projector)?
Cheers Darren.
Hi Darren,
the decoder in the old Avant can't decode the (Dolby/DTS) HD soundtrack that most bluray discs offer, and - unfortunately - the coax connection can not transport a 5.1 PCM stream (decoded from the player do the decoding - not all players can!).
You would have to let it downmix to PCM 2.0 (or choose the stereo-track, if present), which is not quite what you expect.
(Note: you could - if the tv has the DTS-decoder built-in - play the 'core-signal' of the DTS HD-MA track this way, but only if a DTS HD-MA is present on the disc. Dolby TrueHD behaves different.)
For what you are attempting to do, you will need a preamp with an HDMI input.
A BSys3 or 4 will do the job.
Alternatively you could use the OPPO BR-player (or a non-B&O receiver with pre-outs) and use the analog outputs - but you might run into trigger problems with the BeoLabs.

There is a tv - and there is a BV
Thank you for the quick responseThe beosystem 3 or 4 will be the end game, but I am looking for a cheaperinterim step. I fully understand that the avant will only work with DD 5.1AC3 encoded, so no DD-HD etc.On the assumption the avant receives a DD 5.1 AC3 encoded signal via coax(my bluray will downmix to DD 5.1) - would the setup work?Cheers,Darren
Should work!
