Sound system in V1-40 same as BeoLit 12?

Just realized that BeoLit 12 has 120w total amplifiers and 2x2 inch tweeters and 4 inch woofer just like the V1-40. I think it might be the very same setup. What do you think?

It says on v1 tech specs that it has support for dolby 5.1 and dts 2.0. Does that mean that DTs only works for a stereo setup? I like DTS and always choose it before dolby digital. And no HD sound codec support either.

Perhaps Geoff have a good answer for this. I would even pay extra for licence to play these codecs that my old yamaha rx-v3800 play without a problem since I bought it five years ago.

I do like it anyway but I want it to work as good as it can. It has better sound than much else so the software should not be limiting the software, right?

It can take PCM audio so I guess if the bluray player or whatever can convert HD to PCM that it is ok anyway?

PS. I will probably get my V1-40 next week according to my retailer :) happy anyhow and I think the sound modes are genial. And I think the technical spec sheet on beoplay.com is wrong, it certainly looks weird at least with large fonts mixed with normal.

I don't think that the speakers are the same, just look at the price of BL12, also, the BL12 speaker units require extremely little cabinet volume BUT a wall right behind.

It would be nice to have a review of the sound of the V1-40 and V1-32 vs the Beolit 12 ...

Could early owners rate the sound?

And regarding the surround module. I think that B&O recommend that you let your player make the decoding and then send it to the TV as PCM, therefore there is no need to support DTS, DD TrueHD, DTS MA etc.

Reason for supporting DD surround (from my point of view) is that you need this for TV signals using HD, where the sound normally (always?) is using Dolby Digital.

By doing so, B&O also saves money as they don't need to buy license to all the different formats.

I think they have about the same amount of cabinet volume actually and I think it is easier for B&O to use one solution in several places instead of many different parts. But I am not sure. The BeoLit 12 has a price set after function, design and quality, I don't think the price is just for the speakers.

I agree that a comparison between the systems would be interesting also =)

I am not sure I like that philosophy because I am not sure that all players can decode the signal. And if they do, is it good enough?

I can't speak definitively to the first issue - however, I will say that I have yet to see a Blu-ray player that does not support all of the currently standard formats for Blu-ray and DVD.

As to the second question, certification by Dolby and/or DTS means that you have their assurance that the decoded PCM conversion to the HDMI output is correct, whether it's in a player, AVR, surround processor, or television. This, in turn, means that there is no loss of quality incurred by sending a PCM signal via a player's HDMI output (instead of the bitstream) to the audio processor in a B&O TV. Consequently, you don't need to worry about loss of sound performance caused by using a PCM stream instead of an encoded one, if the player has been certified (this will be stated in its manual).

Thanks Geoff for your most calming answer. I have to say, one of the reasons I usually pick DTS when available, is to see the nice piano intro that they sometimes have. But I also feel that DTS sounds better somehow.

I came to think about another thing, how about if the source material is stereo. Can the V1 make it into fake surround? Like DTS Neo:6 for example, which I use on my yamaha receiver sometimes. I am not planning to use a surround setup with it right now but I think others might want to use all of their speakers when watching movies from TV-broadcasts that usually are in stereo only.

Thanks again!

Cheers,

//Michael

Hi Michael,

To continue on with the conversation further and further from the topic in the title... :-)

Glad to hear that I've calmed your fears - however, you bring up a different issue in this response. Both Dolby and DTS ensure that the decoders for their respective formats in any given product work properly. However, that is not to say that an audio track encoded in a DTS format will be the same as the same track encoded in a Dolby format - they won't.

As for "fake surround", the V1 is typically in "TrueImage" mode (check under MENU->Sound Modes->MODE->Advanced Settings->Spatial). TrueImage will ensure that if you have fewer channels going out than coming in (i.e. 5.1 movie, but only two loudspeakers) then the channels will be downmixed to the output. Conversely, if you have more output channels than inputs (i.e. stereo in but 5.1 out) then it will up mix. If the input and the output channel configurations match, then it becomes a through-put.

This decision whether to upmix, downmix,or do nothing, is made on the fly. The only Sound Mode that is not in TrueImage as a factory default is the Custom mode.

Note that, if your source material is in Mono, then TrueImage will not do much - this is because you don't want mono voices smeared all over the room in all speakers - this would greatly reduce intelligibility and would generally be a bad idea. So, it's really a stereo-to-surround upmixer, and not a pseudo-stereo algorithm. For more detailed information on this, check out the Technical Sound Guide available at the B&O website.

Cheers

Hi Geoff,

Nice to hear your answer (even if I might drive it very off topic :). I understand it is the danish national day today and in our calendar, the name for the day is "Bo", just a sidenote!

Regarding the codecs I understand that the sound will sound differently in Dolby versus DTS. Do you have any preference of them? I often rely on DTS which I always thought was a bit better.

Very interesting to hear about TrueImage, it seem to work exactly as I want it to, and probably most people too. And a nice feature to not spread mono around the room. Is the TrueImage-technology perfected at B&O?

I have read the Technical Sound Guide just when it appeared, seems like I should read it more carefully again.

My B&O retailer in Lund, Sweden (not far from Struer) called me today to let me know that my V1-40 had arrived to the store and I am going to pick it up on thursday since tomorrow is our nationaldag and everything is closed. I will play with the sound modes as soon as I can :-)

Many thanks for your detailed and simple-to-understand answer and have a happy nationaldag in Denmark!

Thanks Elephant :).

It is actually the nationaldag of Sweden today, Denmark was yesterday and I live in Sweden. So I got my danish TV delivered from Denmark on their national day, where our calendar said that the name of the day was "Bo". I took it as a sign :P

And now I can't get it today since it is our national day today, but I am happy for that at least and I´ll get my TV tomorrow :D

Yes Congrats Michael! Did you go for the white one?

Please please please let us all know your thoughts and praises for it, once you have played with your new toy!  Sounds exciting...

All Michael do you have a Apple TV? I would be interested to hear your views.

Here's an interesting question. I had a B&O BV6-22 a few years ago and I thought the sound quality from it was really really decent (DVD1 & Grundig Sky box). Is the V1 better sounding than this?

Thanks Paul! Yes I did, but I also ordered a black one for my old neighbour and we are going to pick them up together and I will help her set up her black model.

Will try to document my excitement of the V1 here once I get my hands on it :).

Yes, I actually got two Apple TVs, and I just sold my old ones and upgraded to the new 1080p-edition. The one for my V1 is still in its plastic and I hope that a pair of PUC-cables are included with the TV (I think I read that they sound be).

I am not very familiar with the BV6-22, I have seen/heard it in a few stores (they are suprisingly useful for that purpose) but don't have any specifik memories of that sound.

The store had some problems acquiring the floor stands and only got one, the rest was the wall-mount. They told us we had to get the floor stand with the tv and then buy another if we would want another stand than that. And now they only got one so I am not sure how they will help us :).

I probably have to wait for one to arrive and let my former neighbour get the one they got. They have one on display but I don't really want to mess it up and I want it new :).

Looking forward with interest to your initial impressions... heheh, it's your TV, but 'we're' all excited for and with you... Big Smile

:) I hope - and think - so too! I think the design is simple and unobtrusive which is good for a TV.
"Making the simple complicated is commonplace; making the complicated simple, awesomely simple, that's creativity."

One thing I like is pleasant surprises and I think the simple design of the V1 combined with its technology will surprise most people.

Nice to hear how we all are excited Big Smile

Take care!

Hi Michael,

Wow, the white one looks fantastic!  Do let us know how well it works with the Apple TV (I'm interested as everything i own is now on iTunes and i don't want to invest in Blu-ray as I feel it will very quickly become more than yesterday's technology!).

Thanks for your input on the BV6-22 - It sounded better than my Century as the Century's casing vibrated & boomed a lot when playing music at a decent level whereas the BV6 cabinet was rock solid.

Anyway, very much looking forward to your review...

I got a Ps3 on my 10-46 purely for its Blu Ray, and have used it for this probably 3 times.

Bad Company 3 on the other hand........

Apple TV all the way.

Interesting to hear about the bv6 vs century. I had a century but sold it a year ago or so. Cant really imagine that bv6 sounded better, wow.

I am a real Mac geek so I promise to do my best to report back on apple tv integration as well :)

Very interesting debate on the Apple TV box - thanks Michael & Chris!

I stil have my Century to this day, although it is rarely used - looks lovely though, but I always found that electric door to be very very troublesome - it was always jamming, a real shame as that was part of the B&O image and magic!

Saving for the A8 Airplay right now as the design to me is pure iconic!

Enjoy the v1 Michael!!!

Hi again.

Me and my former neighbour, an old lady who also appreciates good design picked up our V1´s yesterday. The store only had gotten one floor stand and the rest was wall mounts. Since they only got one I had to give that to my neighbour. So now I have my white V1 lying on the floor for two weeks.. If I dont go back and pick up a wall mount, but then I need someone to install it.

However I did help her setup the TV and connected PUC cables to a DVD-player and a cablebox (iptv). Unfortunately the PUC codes for Sony DVD was very bad, they only had a few and one was "generic" - did not work.. But the cablebox was not an issue, which is strange since it is very unusual.

One BIG issue occured. She has a BS9000 and the retailer told me that it was possible to disable the radio-feature in the V1. This is true, it stops respond to Radio from the remote when the V1 is on. But not when it is in standby. This makes the TV start when she wants to turn on the radio. I really hope this is a software glitch that can be fixed in future upgrades (soon).

Since I haven't been able to use my own TV I have not yet learned the settings very well. I did not at all like the new joystick on the beo4, very strange feeling and the GUI seems very slow because you have to navigate with the joystick. It doesnt understand that if you hold it down that you want it to step. It just stops. And it seems very fragile. Would do anything to be able to use the usual buttons.

It took very long to install everything properly and when I was done and turned on the TV for the first time it just blinked red and after a while it said PIN CODE. Which, of course, we did not have.. But my retailer was available on his cellphone and could retrieve it for us.

Just had time to set it up to work (at all). Got home and had to go to sleep because of a long day at work today. And since I dont have any kind of stand I CANT USE IT!! So stupid not to include a stand in the box, it would certainly fit and they make you buy the floor stand so why not?

I like the TV but I am really annoyed because I paid so much money cash and I can't even use it. I don't want to damage it so I just have to wait. And have a TV in my kitchen for the time being. They said it will take at least 14 days for the stand to arrive. I really wanted the hanging stand but that would take even longer, and I would have to buy that extra.

£2,500 and you can't use it. That's an effing disgrace.

I took theese pictures of the installation I made at her place. I think it look very good. The boxes are in the cabinet below the TV. She is going to try the higher floor-stand also, and perhaps the wall mount. But it really looks good even if it is a bit tilted at that height.

What a beautiful house Michael!

The V1 looks great in it too - not overpowering! I think that you've made the right decision though with the white one!

I do hope that your stand arrives soon. Very kind of you letting your neighbour have it!

She should definitely go for the wall mount. It shouldn't be tilted when placed in that height. (and then you can get the floor stand) Wink

I agree and she too but I don't want the low floor stand actually, perhaps temporary but I want it higher up since it is going to be placed in my bedroom

Glad you like it, I like it to (but it is not my house) =). We where neighbours before but not anymore, but we are still friends!

I like the white one very much and after seeing the black 40" I like it to but I prefer the white one :)

Amazing pictures ... I know photos are photos and life is life ... but I am amazed that the "so called industrial" look and feel fitted in so well !!

Thanks! I agree. It is so simple, yet elegant that it blends well in the decor. The form and design makes it very timeless and doesnt take focus from anything else.

Could you also say if the beolit speakers in any way are like the V1? I am curious about that

The only similarity between the Beolit 12 loudspeaker drivers and the V1 drivers  is their diameters.

cheers

Thanks for that info! I have yet to try my V1 since it is still in its box. I will hopefully get some help to install the tv with a wall mount tomorrow and then I will get to use my TV at last :)

Michael:

I can see you used the low stand in a high position.

Can you comment on any problems with the viewing angle and reflections because of the inclined angle of the TV?

Hi Mikael,

It is not My TV, it is a friends tv. We had no choice than the low floor stand and she likes it. We are waiting for the high floor stand to try instead but I think she will end up with the wall mount like me.

It does look good anyhow but of course it looks a bit unusual to have the tilted angle but the color reproduction is still very good like that.

Remember that the old beovision 8 also was tilted, and almost impossible to "un-tilt":)
