Jeff: Playdrv4me, thanks for the memory! That scene, first time I saw it, immediately brought those old CV speakers back into my thoughts. Turn it up to 11.

Haha, you're welcome! :)
My BeoLab 9 was repaired today. It got a new tweeter + cables. I hope it will work much better than before! I don't want to see the orange light come on again :-).

wishing you all the best with it Mike :-)
Aussie Michael:wishing you all the best with it Mike :-)
After coming home I notice that the treble output on the repaired speaker is much lower than my other one. Very hard to say which one is wrong but there is a very big difference. Feels like one of my ears aren't even working :).
By the way, the new tweeter was packed in a box with the cable over it, so it pressed against the ring on it. It was mounted in my BeoLab 9 earlier today and it still looks weird, I wonder if this is really good for the tweeter(?).

Hard to say for sure what's causing the treble problems but obviously something is different in the new tweeter versus the old. Also, while I don't think the crease in the surround of the tweeter is all that big of a deal, it shouldn't be that way.
Dave Farr:I wouldn't accept that. Make them do it again. It should not sound different and sounds as though it's not been calibrated possibly. Maybe Geoff can comment. It should not be dented in any way and should not have been returned to you like that. Dave.
Dave.
I agree, something's not right. Either they didn't calibrate for the replacement driver or the dent has misaligned the voice coil so it isn't moving freely, or both.
Jeff
I'm afraid I'm recovering from the BeoVirus.
The service guy is very polite and friendly and he said that the speaker would correct itself but I think I will ask for them to fix it again if it isn't better in a day more. It feels a bit bad using it if the voice coil is not mounted correctly while I am using them in the time being. Actually I am most surprised that they ship the elements that way. It could have been in a protective hard casing. And the issue with treble confuses me further. Perhaps the other tweeter is to loud, and the new one is better and both should be exchanged? I always thought they sounded a bit sharp. But I can't say. Very hard to say which one is correct. The best thing would be to calibrate the speakers when they are serviced, right?

It shouldn't "fix itself." It should have sounded fine as soon as it was repaired. There are three little screw potentiometers on the BL9 for setting the level for each driver in the speaker. If it's like the BL8000 (I haven't looked at the repair manual for the BL9 but have for the BL8000) each driver is printed with a number relating to its efficiency in dB relative to a standard + or - so many dB. The range is rather small but significant. On the BL6000/8000 you adjust the level using a test signal and a meter when changing a driver.
I strongly suspect they just slapped the driver in and never really calibrated it. However, as much of a difference in level as you seem to note almost makes me think there's something else wrong with the driver.
At any rate, hope you get it fixed soon, the BL9 is a very good speaker, I really love mine.
Did you get your BL9s used or from a dealer? It's possible, I suppose, that someone diddled with the pots on your speakers trying to get more treble, and they calibrated this one and the other one is out of whack. The damage to the driver surround worries me though, tweeters don't move much and anything crimping their motion is bad.
Thanks Jeff! The repair man actually did read the dB offset on the replacement tweeter (The original one had no info about that, but the replacement did (-0,3dB). And he adjusted the potentiometer accordingly I think but perhaps he got it done wrong. I don't know. Interesting to hear about how the BL8000 are repaired since they are also going to repair a pair of 8000´s for me as well. By the way, I bought the speakers new last year from a dealer so I don't think anyone has played with the settings on them.
You sure we're not long lost brothers? I have a pair of BL9s and a pair of BL8000s too! I lived with the 8000s for years as my mains until I moved to a much larger house with a huge living room, where they just got lost. I moved them to the dining room/sun room area, and got the 9s, which do an amazing job filling the room.
Well, hopefully you'll get it sorted out soon, either a new driver or new adjustment. I think I need to look up the procedure for changing out the drivers in a BL9 to see if its the same as the older stuff. I have pair of BL6000s I need to repair to use as surrounds, waiting for me in my workroom staring at me and trying to make me feel guilty for not getting to them.
Haha, that is very funny! I have two pairs of BL8000, one pair serves as surround speakers in my living room setup. The other pair (the bad ones) are usually in my office but now on service. I am not sure how any of my speakers will be arranged since I am looking to move to a new apartment, probably smaller. Will be a tough choice!
