BAND'OH!:

Thanks John, yes your post does help a lot and I am in agreement that the Horizon 48" is the better tv so I'll let the dealer I am buying from know during the week. I must admit I do like the look for the Horizon, especially how it sits on top of a table/base unit as pictured.

It would be interesting to know if the Horizon produces a better picture than a BV11, say a 2014/2015 model for example. Wonder if anyone has made any side by side comparisons playing SD/HD content and could comment?

Regarding the sound, it's interesting to note your thoughts about the BL9s as I too assumed I would not need an extra sub with them; it was a dealer who mentioned that, so I'll check with them again why they were suggesting this. The other option is to trade in the BL9s and use a completely different setup with the new Horizon, for example a BL14 5.1 system. Of course while great for movie, I would probably be getting less quality when playing music only, so perhaps not a good trade in after all?

Simon.

Hi Simon

That's a stunning picture of the Horizon - looks to be both modern and yet classic - in true B&O tradition.  Many B&O enthusiasts decried the aesthetics of the V1-40 when it came out, however the design went on to win a Red Spot design award, and having lived with one for the best part of three years, it is sill a set that gets admiring comments from visitors on both picture quality and aesthetic grounds - were I facing the same decision to buy today, I wouldn't hesitate - my overall ownership satisfaction living with the product is such that I cannot recommend it highly enough.. :-)

I came to B&O from a somewhat tortuous and expensive pathway through the world of audiophile separates systems, and whilst they're not the last word in speakers, Beolab 9's are still an awesome speaker, bettered only in B&O's range by the Lab 20, Lab 5's and of course the Lab 90's.  Any other move is basically going to be either sideways, or more likely backwards in overall sonic abilities.

Even Lab 20's, whilst better than the Lab 9's - are really only marginally better -  I'd regard a jump from 9's to Lab 5's as being the more logical step as an owner of 9's - funds permitting of course.

As to bass redirection and possible use of a Beolab 2 - I agree the dealer should be best placed to advise the best option - my comments are based upon my initial setup with my V1-40 + Lab 9's and the technical sound guide for the V1-40 at the time - but that's two to three years ago, and there have been many software updates since then - and of course the Horizon is a much later set.

I'd also add that my room at the time was double brick and with concrete floors and ceiling - an apartment - which will always give better bass results than say plasterboard and brick veneer with a wooden, suspended floor.

Trust that this is of some assistance..

Kind regards

John... :-)

Hi Simon

Just an slight addition to my post, as I don't wish to give out inccorect information; and for the sake of curiosity and accuracy, I re-checked the technical sound guides for my V1-40 as regards bass redirection for connected Beolab speakers (this information really applies to the surround sound processing within the TV, rather than the TV itself) and cross checked with the technical sound guide for the Horizon.

Sure enough, running say Beolab 9's with a Beolab 2 or 19, low bass will not be re-directed from Lab 9's to a Beolab 2 or 19, or the other way around. i.e. from a Beolab 2 or 19 to Beolab 9's.

From that, I would take that the bass response of each is broadly similar, and therefore no redirection will take place when setup at factory defaults.

Do note though, on technical specs the Lab 9 is rated as having a useful frequency response down to 30hz; that of the Lab 2 to 23hz - so a little lower, and also able to play to 110db as a stereo pair assuming two Beolab 2's.

Given that the Lab 2 appears to be discontinued in favour of the Lab 19, which uses two 8", v's two 10" drivers in a pair of Lab 9's, I'd say the Lab 9's will give you the marginally better results for both movie and music use than one Beolab 19 - especially in music where you get much better results with stereo low bass, rather than mono bass.  LFE in movies is mono though, so less of a concern.  But for a mix of music and movies - my choice would be the Lab 9's.  I am biased though as I love mine, but the tech specs would support that view.  Of course one could always run two Beolab 19's... - but really all one would gain there would be more SPL (volume) not necessarily frequency extension.

If one wants to shake the house with true infrasonic bass frequencies, then that means Lab 5's, or Lab 90's, or a third party sub capable of those sorts of SPL outputs at true infrasonic frequencies - the big 18" Velodynes for example.

Kind regards

John.. :-)

Hi John, I just wanted to thank you for taking the time to write your last 2 posts and for all your other posts up to this point. I really look forward to healthy and long drawn out discussions/debates on this forum on many topics; especially sound, picture and design, which are my particular interests. Of course that can only be achieved by people sharing their thoughts and views rather than just reading and moving on.

It has been fantastic to read everything people have said in this thread so far and helped cement ideas I had about going forward but wasn't 100% sure about; I needed that push over the edge from fellow enthusiasts to get their!

Thanks again John, and to all those who have contributed to this thread.

Simon.

B&O products are V1-32, BS2, H95, E8 and an Essence remote.
11-46 now replaced with Sony A90J 65”, Sony HT-A9, Sony UBP-X800M2 and Sony SRS-NS7.
