Yeahhhh, Dolby Digital + works on my Avant!

B & O has stated at my request that there is a new service software for the Avant!
However, I had to activate this only through my dealer at B & O, then I was able to update my avant normal via Internet to version number 1.0.11.37494

Good support from my dealer and from B & O, however, very disappointing that the function was only released on request!

Best regards

Erich

After reading it leaves me a bit confused.

I have a BV9 with a Shield. same issue, only 2.0 sound.

But using the ATV3, I have 5.1 sound coming from the ATV3.

So, what's the real difference?  My BV obviously hasn't the right EDID, but it seems that the ATV3 doesn't care.

It's normal, the Shield and the Apple TV have different capabilities. I will try to explain, let me know if I don't make sense.

Netflix on the Shield only carries DD+ streams, not the plain DD. If the TV does not support DD+, it will output Stereo (or like we discovered if the TV has the wrong EDID). This is because the Shield does not decode on the fly DD+ and convert to plain DD for those TV's which do not support DD+. I understand it's a licensing issue (Nvidia did not pay :) )

The Apple TV on the other hand reencodes DD+ to DD, therefore you get Dolby Digital/5.1 sound.

The BV9 supports DD but not DD+, so it's in the same situation as un unpatched BV11/Avant. What you are experiencing is perfectly normal (unfortunately... I returned my first Shield when I used it on a BV10 - it was not mentioned anywhere that you needed DD+ to get multichannel sound).

I will also add that some devices do not rely exclusively on the EDID. A first generation Amazon Fire TV has the option to force DD+ output even if the EDID says it's not supported.

Thanks for summarizing this. Clear and short.

But, the next thing comes to mind when I think of some sort of same situation. On the Shield there is PrimeVideo from Amazon, the same happens there. Only 2.0 stereo instead of the 5.1 (The Grand Tour, 5.1 available).

The Shield is an Android based device, so which one is to "blame" for this behaviour, The app Netflix and/or Primevideo or the Android that is restricting the app as it a kind of layer between the app and tv.

Is it Netflix that demands the right EDID, or is it Android that demands this. In case of the latter, isn't there a app available in the Playstore that could solve the EDID or takes over the "on the fly" decoding.

You are correct. I forgot to mention that the Amazon app behaves exactly as Netflix. Both apps use DD+ as the audio standard. They both ask the device (Shield) if the sink supports DD+. If it does, Netflix will display "5.1" next to the language when you select the audio track.

Nvidia is to blame for this. Had they paid the licensing fee to decode and convert instead of passing through DD+ we would enjoy Multichannel sound even on our older BV10/BV9. The Amazon Fire TV is also Android based, but with a different implementation.

This Netflix page addresses the issue: https://help.netflix.com/en/node/14163

The ideal situation would have been for the Shield to:

1) Decode DD+ and convert to DD (for older TV's/AV Receivers)
2) Have a setting to force DD+ (in order to disregard the EDID) for those bloody B&O TV's with wrong EDID Big Smile

I can see my Avant is running 1.0.11.37404

I presume I need to ask my dealer to request access to 1.0.11.37494 ?

Is the only change that DD+ works? (Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD MA?

To the best of my knowledge, there aren’t any B&O Devices which support TrueHD and DTS-HD, Eclipse included.

The Avant can handle the following input formats:

HDMI: Multichannel PCM, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS Digital Surround.
SPDIF: Stereo PCM, Dolby Digital  and DTS Digital Surround

And decode the following formats:

Multichannel PCM, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus,
DTS Digital Surround, HE-AAC v1 and v2, LC-AAC, mp3, WMA, WMA lossless, FLAC, Up- & down-mixing: Bang & Olufsen True Image,
downmix, 1:1

Just had contact with Support.
There is a service software available that will solve the issue.

Just contact your dealer, they can do a request!

After you let me activate the service software for the Beovision Avant it could be easily installed.

The joy that Dolby Digital Plus now worked, however, was very quickly clouded by some violent noise (a kind of crackling noises) that occur sporadically.

I tried to make two videos where you can hear the sounds.

- with noise: https://youtu.be/2roRIREKHa0

- without noise: https://youtu.be/vsp9gDTMZxQ

In some cases it is enough to press the pause button briefly, in some cases the movie has to be restarted and the sounds are eliminated for a moment but reappear after any time!

The sounds appear only on the stream of Netflix and Amazon Prime in Dolby Digital Plus.

Does anyone have the same problem after update with the service software?

Yes, that is how my avant behaves with 4k video from the shield (and also from a Kaleidescape strato).

As you say, often pause and resume will 'fix' the noise.

Hi all,

resurrecting this thread as I have now added an Nvidia Shield 2019 to my Avant 55 mk1 and have found the same audio problem with DD+ content.

Did anyone find a solution to this?

Many thanks,

Dion.

BeoVision Harmony77 G1 with BeoLab18 x 4 & BeoLab14 4.1 (7.1.4); BeoPlayA9 Mk4; BeoSound2; BeoSound1 x 2; BeoPlayH95; BeoPlayE6; BeoPlayH3 ANC

..and it all started 20 years ago with a pair of B&O A8 Earphones...

If you’re still in time I would return the Shield and get an Apple TV.
I used to stick to the Shield because of Spotify, but now that the Apple TV has it, there is no need for me to keep it (also because I have two BV11 and I don’t feel the need to upgrade to 4K anytime soon).

Thanks Boxsti and Marcello for the quick responses.

Such a shame there was no solution to this as my home is firmly in the google / google assistant world so an ATV is out. Also I'm not quite ready to make the jump to a harmony :)

May be of interest to someone, but this is definitely an issue that only arises with the Avant in 4K. I have the exact same setup with my Beosystem4 and it does not have this issue.

Then another solution might be to try a different Android-based streaming box (The Mibox S comes to mind because my father uses it with his LG C9) and see if you still experience the problem (in time to return it if it does not work).

Can that really be true....that a 2019 device can not decode Dolby Plus (and send it as PCM over the HDMI to the receiver/the Avant 1.gen)?

Wasn’t there an update recently for that - maybe Nvidea now has paid the fee to Dolby?

And, if not....since it is Android-based, there might be a workaround/a hack for that ;-))))

There is a tv - and there is a BV

Actually judging from Reddit comments, it seems that the 2019 Shield, because of the Atmos license, converts DD+ to DD.
