To the person who called me "incompetent", I actually have a master’s degree in software engineering

Everyone has a masters in something when countering an argument. You'd be surprised how many users email us, who can't do basic stuff such as how to enter their serial code within their software.....and, when we point how to enter their code, they reply saying "I am an IT engineer with over 12 years of experience..." as if to prove that actually it's so hard to enter their code, even an IT engineer can't do it. Eh? Pardon?

So, Moxxy, is your masters in condescension or just being mean spirited...  Oh wait, I'm sure this was just a joke like your prior over the top response above.

I like Moxxey , he's an oasis of wit and intelligence in a desert of banality and crass stupidity.

This place used to be fun. Maybe I'm getting old.

Or just plain bored.

I've just opened the iPad and received a software upgrade invitation to upgrade to iOS6. Rather than hit the accept button I thought I'd look up some reviews first. The upgrade apparently removes Google maps applications and gives you an inferior Apple application (developed by Tom Tom). It also prevents you from viewing YouTube videos. So no Flash, and no YouTube. The iPad is just becoming an iTunes interface. It's more and more likely to just st on my BS8!

It was never brilliant for accessing Beoworld.

Apple seem to be losing their way.

Graham

I have an iPad 3 which I have updated to iOS6,and it is incorrect that one cannot view YouTube videos.

Additionally,I have never experienced any problems accessing a website.

In fact the benefit of iOS,as opposed to Android,is that one is presented with a full website page rather than Android's cut down version which one has to scroll down to specifically request a full version.

Fair enough, but I was quoting from this review. Perhaps I took 'Google's apps have been given the boot, so there's no YouTube and no Google Maps' too literally?

I am very wary of Apple upgrades after that last iPad upgrade which was so cleverly done that you could not go back to the original system if you did not like the upgrade features (inc tabs instead of thumbnails).

So, do google maps, google earth etc as well as YouTUbe still operate OK after the upgrade?

I still get annoyed at the absence of Flash: with too many websites the embedded flash movies just show as white space.

The other annoying feature, which may well be to do with the way websites are set up rather than the op system, is that the iPad is often detected as a mobile device and you get a cut-down version of the proper website. In most cases there isn't an option that works properly to get back to the full website once this has happened.

The lesson is to not upgrade immediately and wait until the major issues are resolved and/or you fully understand what you are getting and whether the upgrade is reversible or not.

Graham,

What people don't understand is that the IOS6 upgrade was very extensive affecting everything.  They should have done the maps as a beta but I'll bet they had significant problems with google.  If maps is something  you use often, don't upgrade yet.  When I updated there was a continuous barrage of updates for apps for the next 2 days.  The passbook application is clumsy.  I had expected to use passbook because the airline I usually travel on, the pharmacy I use and of course Starbuck are supposed to be included with it.  Passbook doesn't work and the instructions are terrible.  I'll just have to be patient.  Everything else including the really complex apps are working.

As a true Apple fanboy, I am getting excited about the delivery of a new iPhone 5 on Friday.  Your philosophy about waiting to upgrade is the reasonable approach.  I was an early adopter of the Beosound 5 and definitely regret that although I love the Beosound 5 now.

Hope this helps somewhat.

Let me apologize for this personal attack.  First, upon further review, it was Flappo who made the over the top comment followed by "oh yeah, that was a joke" above that irritated me, not Moxxy...  Second, why should I get irritated, this is just internet forum talk (although, if my memory serves, it didn't used to be that way here - although now that I've stooped to that level how can I criticize?)... perhaps I'll stay away from these Apple threads since, although I'm a long time Apple customer, I'm not necessarily a happy one - which by recent popular forum wisdom makes me an imbecile...Stick out tongue

It's sad the way we spend all day infighting rather than saying how much we all love B&O.

Same here, but I'm trying to keep the vintage forum alive, without much luck, the good and interesting threads are gone.

Collecting Vintage B&O is not a hobby, its a lifestyle.

I completely agree with your point Moxxey, my point isn't that people who are supposedly qualified to do things always get it right.  My point is merely that as a provider of software solutions it is very easy to blame the user as 'incompetent' but if you have incompetent users then it is my job to deliver something that it fool proof.

Good luck with that!

Make something "fool proof" and GOD will make a better fool.

How about a moderator removing this thread or, alternatively, re-heading it 'Apple Software Upgrade Issues' and move it to the Beomac forum removing all the irrelevant/derogatory posts in the process?

I guess my own comments on google maps and YouTube are completely irrelevant in a Beoworld context!
