For £1700 i should expect perfection!!!

If perfection only cost £1700 why would anybody need to invest in BeoLab5's? Whistle

You're a salesman so you're obviously biased.

If they brought out a beoturd you'd no doubt eulogise over it's astonishing qualities.

Face it , the new designs are crap.

Simple Opman, these are BANG&OLUFSEN prices  aimed for the rich and 5-10 times higher priced than hifi brands.  Sometimes I really think they price their products as a joke to test which fool will pay for them. Normally I like B&O for their design as I find them under performing but recently their designs under perform too.

I'm sure that Tue will do a wonderful sales job next year launching the new BeoTurd to its followers!

Maybe Bang & Olufsen products are aimed at people who can afford them especially the digital generation.  However I seem to remember you telling us about your love for Paul Smith clothes.  I looked online and found that a Paul Smith casual shirt can usually be around £200 or more.  Anybody that can afford a Paul Smith shirt can surely afford a Beoplay A9.  Right?

Can you guys honestly say hand on heart that these abominations , the V1 ( in sh**ty brown ) , the beolit breeze block radio & this 'thing' are in the same league as the timeless design classics from JJ & DL ?

B&O have seriously lost the plot

No they are not Flappo, but they are not aimed at the same target audience of those products that we all covert so dearly.

A different and new audience at a different price, but still maintaining the technical excellence in something that is designed to be part of a home. Not the usual Jodrel bank of wires other makes attract with their separates etc. If it sells and makes profit thus securing a future generation of top of the line products, then good luck to them.

The A9 is growing on me and the wife, but she thought the brown thing was a photoshop joke by one of us. Loved Punchers comment....

Paul W:

I'm horrified. It looks like some alien. There is NO way people will pay to have this in a house. It's horrific. Some BIG BOSSES are seriously going to get fired for this contraption! It's like having a road work/speed limit sign in your living room.

Taste in design is usually very personal, apart perhaps from those who have both studied art/design, and can explain why somthing looks the way it does, and the pros and cons of the design.

I accept that you find it alien and horrid.  I felt the same way when I saw the Bangle Butt BMW's and the new Mini coupe.

I don't know which is worse.  Thankfully, the BMW Bangle Butt era seems to be over, but I can't see anyone other than style obsessed insecure metrosexuals and women giving space to a Mini coupe.  There is NO way sensible people would give driveway space to one.  It's horrific.  Some BIG BOSSES are seriously going to get fired for this contraption! It's like having a hairdressers accessory sitting in your driveway.... LOL Big Smile

Only teasing, Hehe, but you see, as I say, taste in design is so very personal, and unfortunately I'm not a graduate of either a design or art school, unlike so many here who's subjective dismissal is presented as absolute fact.

I can only say that having seen some decent pictures of it, I rather like it.  I'm only disappointed that it's not going to be suitable for a stereo pair, so I guess I'll continue to pursue some Lab series speakers, but would otherwise wish B&O every success with it.

Remember, without new products and new designs, to attract new and fresh customers  to the brand, B&O may end up not being around to satisfy the aesthetic tastes of those who prefer their more upmarket - and expensive - products in the long term.

Best Regards

John... Cool

Very good point John! And isn't that what great art is all about - debate :)

Still, standing at 3 feet high this is one room dominating thing! It seriously looks like the BS8 has been fed on steroids by some kind of spider alien! I think a lot of people would be terrified to have this in their house :)

That was what I initially thought too but most of those the tech sites suggested that the beoplay 9 will be carried by some apple stores. Perhaps on the wall?

When I finally get my hands on it I will definitely not hide the ingeniously styled grill with a cover. Fibonacci pattern and a big B&O logo featured on the grill? Definitely not a combination you wanna hide. Btw I think the design is trying to put some sort of hex the designer put for B&O - B&O to expand like a flower.

And has anyone seen the woofer in the unit? It's a genuine subwoofer type big ass magnet kind! The magnet is almost as big as the cone itself! So smart of the marketing department to do a video of its making! Genuine quality on display- that's the kind of marketing I like to see more of B&O in the future.

Oh dear, Moxxie doesn't sound happy with this A9. Same thought came into my mind with regards to the Apple store. There's NO ROOM for something so big especially with Apple TVs on their way ;)

Paul, why on earth would Apple make a "TV"? Apple has made TV's for a long time already, it's called the apple TV and is a small black box.

I'll eat my second hat if Apple will join a money loosing and outdated industry called the TV industry. I'll eat it without ketchup!

I suggest you reserve judgement until you have seen and heard it in your local stores.

I heard it this week at a training meeting and the sound quality is not lacking. When you see images of the A9 in a room set up you will see that it almost merges into the background. There is a deliberate lack of logo so that it isn't obvious when you see it what it is.

I think this is a winner :-)

I'll try make a satellite dish merge in my living room. Stick out tongue

Oh it will merge all right! Out the door!

Big Smile John, if you REALLY, REALLY want to use A9s as a stereo pair - there should be a way to do it.

The preamp section of an A9 is based on the electronics of a Playmaker.
LINE IN is available with autoswiching.
Use two RCA/Cinch cables and connect one A9 only left - the other only right Big Smile

I like the concept of a wireless music system. I like the fact that it's a single unit. Sure that will compromise the stereo image, but that's hardly the point here, is it? There are some clever design touches too like the rear handle doubling as the wall mount and the bass reflex. Also the touch volume control is quite nice. And I also like the fact that it's unlike any other system out there.

And that overall design is both it's stronge suite and it's weakest point. It's a love or hate thing, IMHO. I also think it will stand out in a room rather than blend in. I am quite curious how it is in real life, so I will definitely pay my dealer a visit.

This site seems full of haters anyway, so things don't seem to look too bright for the A9... Just my two cents.

My initial reaction to the A9 was extreme disappointment (in terms of design) but looking at the photos on the beoplay site, I think this is interesting - in a world where music is increasingly about convenience over quality, the A9 may strike a good balance. Will be interesting to see and hear in the flesh.

To the crowd who wonder why no option to operate the Beoplay 9 in stereo pairs, it is mainly due to acoustical reason also. If you look at the driver arrangement on it you will realize that it is not at all optimally placed for such an operation. By having two midrange and two tweeters that operate in sync so wide apart you will definitely introduce the lobing effects. Above 300hz it only make sense if you have single driver per operating range installed unless you are making a line source which is a totally different execution entirely. Has anyone noticed yet that the midrange produced by either the Beolab 8000 and Beolab 6000 a little unrealistic?

Besides I am sure B&O will produce a pair of airplay speakers in the $4000 in the near future. Serious audio companies like Dynaudio and PMC have already produced wireless active speakers in that price range a while back.

Convenience has always traditionally trounced quality for the masses, and lets accept it, we've all been party to that in one way or another at some time.

Writing this off as a player of MP3 music, with its traditionally low bit rate is now becoming an out of date opinion, based on the quality of 5 years ago. Play Spotify at "extreme" quality, or say Apple lossless and i bet i, like most here would really struggle to tell the difference. Wasn't the original Beolit or even the Sony Walkman about convenience over perfect playback? The fact is its got more people listening to a larger variety and quantity of music than ever before.

And thats a great thingYes - thumbs up

wondefulelectric..in my local store they already sell Beolab 6-8000 with Airplay built in. Iphone/Ipad & speakers, and hey presto a smart wireless hifi system that can play radio/MP3 etc for $4,000

There's nothing on the B&O website and I can't imagine the metal BL8000s are designed to handle AirPlay. That's why all AirPlay devices have a plastic component (A8 plastic rear, A9 plastic rear etc). All metal devices won't have AirPlay.

Chris, I'm still thinking you get confused what "AirPlay" is, exactly. Connecting speakers to an Airport Express or Playmaker, doesn't mean they have AirPlay support :)

Difference between what Chris?

You can only get lossless tracks from CD. Lossless, by definition, means no compression. If you then use these non-compressed tracks - extracted from CD - via wifi (Playmaker or otherwise), this is NO different from listening to the same CD track. It will be a 1:1 version of the track on the CD. There will be no difference.

That is incorrect. Lossless formats do compress audio files by about 50%, but when decompressed the audio file is identical bit for bit to the original. It isn't that there is no audible loss, it is that there is no loss at all. They just use a more efficient way of storing the data.

Think about the zip file format. When you compress and decompress a MS Word file with zip, do you get missing letters or words?

well, that's always the excuse I always used when people found problems with my writing!

Whats interesting is that there are several single speaker type systems now, even a dock like the little Beo one is essentially a single setup. Think about this, we went from a big radio, to a mono hifi, to a stereo, to quad and surround sound, and now a not insignificant number of people are going back to basically a single big radio for entertainment.
