I'm having an issue with one midrange where the sound is scratchy and distorted at low volume.  After diagnose by pushing the dome slightly inwards  I found that the voice coil is rubbing slightly.

Is this repairable or I need to replace it?  Anyone attempted to open one before?

The midrange is an ITT LPKM 130/50.120T 4 Ohm found in the M70, M75 and M100

I know, it's a rare animal these days...

TIA to everyone!

Charles

Not having experienced this, I couldn’t say. Just hang on to those M70s is all I can say.

Jacques,

I’m shaking the whole world right now to find at least one working midrange to put back to work my M70’s.

I invested countless hours into the restoration of the speakers and the Beomaster 4400 too and I’m not counting the money invested here.

But you know how it is when restoring old equipment, right?  You’re flipping a coin hoping it will drop on the good side; you never know how it will turn out exactly.

But look at this setup and the only missing piece is my recently acquired BG 4002 waiting for restoration.

My wife and I auditioned the combo for the first time last weekend and just by writing this message, I have goose bumps all over me.  We were totally blown away by pretty much everything that was coming to our ears from a playlist we are listening for more than 20 years.

I never noticed before the faint vibration of that one lead of the bass guitar of Walk On the Wild Side from Lou Reed or the few words whispered by Carly Simon at the beginning of You’re So Vain.

Trust me, I will find that ITT midrange driver and even more, I will fix the other one and keep it as a spare.

Thanks for your support, after all, you're the one who ignited the passion for this set. Wink

Stay tuned my friend!

Hi:

Sounds like the voice coil may have come unglued from the dome. It may be possible to have it re-attached. I have a pair of M150 speakers that has a SEAS dome mid-range that had the a similar issue.

Suggest that you find a local speaker repair shop, the places that refoam speakers. They may be able to work on it. There are lots of audiophile shops in Montreal should be able to find someone local.

Else give David a call and see who he can recommend http://www.armageddonelectronics.com/

B&O may have a trade in program where you send your old one in and then they send you a replacement. This is how they support obsolete drivers.

By the way, still my favorite of all the classic speaker stands, so mid-century. Seeing as how I have a Saarinen dining table and chairs it's no wonder these are my favorites!Smile

Jeff

I'm afraid I'm recovering from the BeoVirus. Sad

Not sure I have your email Charles, but I can send you scans of recent articles by Tim on both the 4400 and the M70s.

Just send me a PM if you are interested!

Thanks a lot Derek for the tips and also the leads.

I wasn't aware of David neither of that B&O program but I will certainly look for a competent speaker restorer as well.  Usually I'm doing this stuff myself but a dome tweeter is another ball game I believe.

I will take every piece of advise offered to me.

Thanks again!

They most certainly haven't!
There has been no support from B&O for these speakers since the mid-80s.
It's a general rule, that apprx 10 years after production ends (read: when spare parts starts to become really needed), the support from B&O is stopped.
Often earlier.

Jeff,

Everyone coming to the house are flabbergasted when they see the speakers.  They don't know if they are actually new or from an another era but certainly unique.

I'm even tempted to do replicas and sell them... no that difficult actually...

Thanks for your support Jeff!

Thanks Martin,

It would be very surprising to see a manufacturer supporting a product after 45 years but you never know.

I found one unit in the US yesterday where the seller was shipping within US only but I convinced him to ship it to Canada.  See said it was testing OK and sounded but you never know what can happen in between.  Finger crossed at this moment...

I have 2 spare dome midranges I think. One may be missing a nut or something, it’s been a while since I opened the box my spare drivers are in. If you end up needing one, let me know, and I will search my version of the dungeons.

You won the vintage drivers lottery Rich? Big Smile  You know that these are rare right?  Thanks for the offer however I found one on eBay but I don't now how well it will work.  Don't risk your life yet in the dungeon unless really needed Wink  I'll keep you posted!

I had a spare pair of M70s with damaged cabinets that I parted out.  The phase links and tweeters were donated to Soren Mexico.  The woofers and midranges still need to find good homes.

Blah blah blah, blah blah ba ran

I spent spent so long waiting to find a woofer on eBay! Any chance you have an extra rear plastic piece that mounts to the stand? One of mine is broken and rotated funny to sort of work. These are my (and my wife’s) favorite B&O speaker.

Sorry, Martin.  But to be clear, the intent of the offer of the midranges was to give them away at no cost.

That wasn't clear. At least to me it wasn't.
But that's of course perfectly fine - and very generous of you.

No kidding, he donated drivers for my M70s and then just for the fun of it he put a BG CD50 and a BG 3000 in the shipping box. its yours for free he wrote, the BG 3000 I repaired and send back to him, just for the fun of it.

What?  You mean the real BG 3000 manufactured by Thorens?  Oh man, that's a heck of a rare machine!  And going for 2K on eBay!

The joy of forums hey! Smile My hat off to you Rich!

Anyone knows who manufactured the filler driver put into the M70?

Not much is said about this one.  I've seen resembling units put into the RL manufactured by Nokia (formerly ITT) but not much else.  Any equivalent available?  I'm building spares just in case...

I got into the equivalent of my dungeons today and found my box labeled "Loudspeaker Drivers."  Within that box, I found these:

I got a similar set up to you.

Beogram 4002

Beovox M75

Beomaster 4400

Beocord 5000

The sound quality is complete pants compared to my Pioneer SA-9500 with Kef Concertos.
