Sounds like I have been doing it right.

My man, just the way I do it, but now its time to real test it, just make sure your speakers can take it. I am really happy for you that this worked out, and hope you will experience the same with BM 2400.

Collecting Vintage B&O is not a hobby, its a lifestyle.

Hi Søren,

Thank you, kind sir, for the encouraging words.

I am not 100% certain why I am being so cautious, perhaps because at 70 previously, this is where the BM 4500 cut back on the volume itself.

Somehow it doesn’t really sound all that loud at 70.

With Benny’s repair I actually am confident that IF I push the BM 4500 too far and it curtails the volume, it won’t hurt it, especially now that I am running a single pair of S 45.2 speakers instead of three power hungry behemoths.

The pairing is extremely good, not too much for the amp and not too much for the speakers.

OK, so enough talk, I just pushed the BM 4500 to 76 and frankly that is as far as I feel the need to go.

With that much pounding, my rattle came back in the one S 45.2 speaker and I “think” I found it. It wasn’t the woofer, which is what “caused” the rattle, but the tweeter was slightly loose.

Are the inner screws supposed to be HIGHLY magnetic? I ask, because they are.

In any case with the screws tightened the rattle appears to have disappeared.

At 76 just putting the fret back on caused a LOT of rattles until back in the fully secured position.

Bottom line, colour me impressed by my restored BM 4500.

On to the BM 2400, I wish Benny had communicated, but I suppose he didn’t feel the need to say he hadn’t looked at my BM 2400 and is waiting until he has something to say about it.

When I hear from Benny, who guys will hear from me.

Thanks for the kind words and especially your interest.

Jeff

Søren Mexico:

Ricardo:
*** Note my makeshift antennae ***

I use the same kind, except my wire is blue, I have such good reception here that everywhere in the house the wire is sufficient. For B&O that is, for my Onkyo, I have to use a wire triple length.

Yes but clipping it to a screwdriver or paperclip or some other metal object just lying about gives it that little extra Mcguyver factor.

Jeff 76 on a set of 45's ought to be about the same sound as 60 or so on a set of 75's. What the hell are you waiting for. Are you trying to tease us !!

Come on man you know you want to unleash it.

Mother of Jefferson Davis! Holy crap!

That does it the S 75 speaker IS a vastly better speaker as compared to the S 45.2. Oh my God!

I turned the volume up to 80 and was shaking the room pretty well. After about 3 minutes the BM 4500 turned the volume down to 78 not liking the 80 setting.

I left it there for a few minutes and decided to best err on the side of caution, once again and turned it down to 76 myself.

Yea Ricardo, you had me right, I wanted to know what this BM 4500 can do and now I do….. and so do you.

When I get my hearing back I’ll try something a little less bombastic than Oh Yea by Yello.

I thank you for taunting me to bring up the S 75’s from downstairs. But now I gotta schlep the speakers back downstairs and after foot surgery this afternoon. (No, not a big deal, but it hurts.)

That sir is the response we have all been waiting for.

Sounds like Your Mirielle Mathieu record collection is going to get some exercise this weelkend. I am guessing you will settle on a cranking volume in the mid 60's. That was about all the louder I have ever really played mine.

Hi Ricardo,

Always my aim to please…. delighted that you were.

It is going to take until tomorrow for my hearing to return to normal, but oh so well worth it!

I really like my S 45.2 speakers, but put side by side with the S 75’s and there is no comparison.

I returned the S 75’s to their regular positions and cranked up the BM 4400. Didn’t sound great and not all that loud and at 6.5 it should be. Usual problem my B&O record cleaner, the MMC 6000 had gathered its usual crud, a little Magic Eraser and BAM! everything is back where it should be.

Søren, in case you are wondering, the BM 4400 is considerably louder than the BM 4500. If the blast from the BM 4500 didn’t finish off my hearing, the BM 4400 took care of what was left.

I currently run my newly found S75's from my BC 9000 (same amp as your 4500) and I can confirm that they sound very good and surely can make my house rattle. A very good combo.

Btw Jeff, I really like you vivid storytelling.

Hi Bo,

I too have a BeoCenter 9000 which is paired with S 75 speakers….. small world eh? And yes the Beomaster 4500 and BeoCenter 9000 have the same amplifier.

Thanks for the compliment on my storytelling. I do enjoy painting a visual picture with words.

I once had a supervisor who mentioned in a seminar she was giving that of all her business specialists she looked forward to my monthly report. I thought she was kidding, but she wasn’t. Monthly reports can be so deadly dull and I hate dull, so I’d always managed to find some ironic humor to spice things up.

Here, case in point, along with the above mentioned supervisor, a real no nonsense lady; it was my turn to showcase my city. I systematically dotted every “I” and crossed every “T.”  I arranged for a great meeting room, I had everything set with the caterer, the A/V gear was in place, the invitations went out, and as the real feather in my cap, I had the Mayor coming as the keynote speaker. That was a biggie.

Two days before the scheduled meeting it hit me like a ton of bricks, OMG I had forgotten to invite the Mayor. A colossal stupid mistake which could easily have cost me my job….. and damn near did!

As such I went hat in hand and begged the Mayor’s secretary to speak to the Mayor, who graciously accepted my last minute invitation. Lord Almighty, I was saved!

Not quite because in addition to the usual remarks about progress within the city the Mayor, with a twinkle in his eye mentioned that I had forgotten to invite him as the keynote speaker, that it took his secretary hours and hours to rearrange a full two weeks of prior commitments but that he wouldn’t have done if for “anyone but Jeff.”

The room erupted into mass laughter and I was beet red with embarrassment all the while feeling holes being drilled into the back of my head from the angry stare of my totally un-amused supervisor. Oh yea, I was in for it and it wasn’t going to be pretty.

The Mayor saw this and sprinted for my boss, gave her a firm talking to and winked at me. My boss came up to me and said, “All I can say is that man really loves you.”

The Mayor was understandably a little annoyed with the last minute invitation and chose to entertain the audience at my expense with a bit of good natured humor. As you may have surmised, the talk with my boss was for my protection.

All in all it was a genuinely good meeting and it only took a month or so before people having heard about the “colorful” business meeting stopped asking me, “Did you REALLY forget to invite the Mayor?”

Just one of my stories Bo, and I hope you liked it.

Jeff

I heard back from Benny and this is what he said:

I checked your BM 2400, you are right it is very clean. Two of the lights are out, but I will replace them all. The tone control pots are all working which is good, but needs rest of the usual stuff, power supply rectifier, certain capacitors, bias circuit pots.”

This doesn’t really explain how my BM 2400 had several near-death experiences and came back and I have no idea what a bias circuit pot is, but at least it is repairable, which I knew it would be, and repaired it will be.

Should be interesting to see how a rebuilt BM 2400 stacks up to the BM 4500.

Hi Jeff,

I've just read about the way your M75 speakers sound with your Amina'ed 4500.

Now perhaps you should hear M70 monitors. They are incredible - and big - speakers!

Hi Jacques,

Not quite M 75 speakers, rather S 75’s. Although my B&O buddy in California, the one who gifted me with my first pair of S 75 speakers says there is very little audible difference between the M 75 and the S 75.

Suffice to say I was very, very impressed by my rebuilt amplifier.

I am back to the S 45.2’s which have a unique quality all their own….. for now

I have been entertaining the thought of acquiring a pair of M 100’s, but this is more of a dream than a likely reality.

Once my Beomaster 2400 returns I will have to make a decision or to vis-à-vis what to do with my music systems.

My MC 120.2 speakers are worthless, plus I have a nagging fear that they in some way are amplifier destroyers. I am not saying that is a fact, but I am saying I fear it and would NEVER use them with my rebuilt Beomaster 4500.

I imagine the BM 4500 will get the spot in the dining room and the S 75 speakers, while continuing to dream about M 100’s.
