Is it possible to connect an ipod directly to a Beolab 2000?
Cheers

I know a man who is working on it.. I sent him a BeoLab 2000 to dissect for this exact purpose.
He's currently at the bottom of this page, wearing a blue polo shirt..

Steve, its time to change that shirt
Collecting Vintage B&O is not a hobby, its a lifestyle.
Hi,
There is no way to directly connect an Ipod or any other audio source to the BeoLab 2000 indeed.
However..with a BeoLink Converter, you can connect your Ipod to the 7-Pin DIN input of the converter, connect the Masterlink cable from converter to BeoLab, and listen to your audio source on the BL2000 by activating the TV source via Beo4 or the direct control if you have a Mk2 version of the BeoLab.
I used this system in the past and it works great.
Hi Christophe,
Thanks for that, I did know about the solution with the Beolink converter (this needs to be the later type that can work as an ML driver). I'm in the process of looking for a neater solution that doesn't need any other B&O products that would add expense or bulk, ie. making the Beolab 2000 a truly stand-alone speaker/iPod dock.
As an aside, the Beolink converter is also a good solution for linking a non-B&O TV into a Beomaster 5, as this avoids the slight audio delay that you get with the official B&O solution of a Behringer USB audio interface. Basically, you Masterlink the converter to the BM5, then link the audio out of the TV into the converter. Set the BM5 into Option 2 and press "TV" on your Beo4 to play sound from the TV through the BM5 and speakers!
In case you were wondering, I have 1,000 identical blue shirts - it makes deciding what to wear much easier in the mornings!
When I get the Beolab 2000 working directly with an iPod, you will be the second person to know (after Lee, who has kindly lent me a speaker to experiment with!) In the meantime, if you have the money and space to add a Beolink converter, this will let you play your iPod through the Beolab 2000 without a B&O master product connected.
Kind regards, Steve.
Steve.

Hi Steve
Don't forget to let me know too!
Has anyone got a Beolink converter of the type Steve mentions (type 1161166) that they would like to sell (How much do these go for?)
Just had a look at the prices at LifestyleAV....... Hurry up with that cable Steve!
Will do Nigel!
Cheers, Steve.

How many 1611's would you like to have?
Brengen & Ophalen
How can I tell the difference between the 2 types?
Looking in the products section it says
"has a supplementary use in that it could be used with a Beocenter 2300/2500 which were fitted with MCL drivers to power an ML system. This requires the Converter to be of the newer type : 1161166. the older 1161466 is unable to perform this function."
I would want a newer type me thinks as I have a Beocenter 2300 which I might want to use it with at some point.
Looking at a photo of one on ebay it just says type 1161
Any luck Steve?
Hi Nigel,
My wife is expecting a baby any day now, so I'm frantically decorating the nursery, building cots, planning routes to the hospital, etc......
I'm hoping to be able to sort out the speaker/ipod dock over the next few weeks once the new arrival has settled in - thanks for your patience!
You must have got the hang of changing those nappies by now!!
Any progress?
Sorry for the slow reply. My baby daughter was born on 3rd September so I'm working on the Beolab 2000 project during the 2am feeds.....
This is taking a liitle longer than expected, both due to my family circumstances and the constraints of the project:-
1) The speaker must still work via Masterlink without needing switching or alteration
2) The speaker should ideally not need internal modification (or this should be minimal and reversable) and any external additions must be small and inconspicuous
3) The full volume range of the speaker should be available when using the iPod (tricky, as this is an unbalanced input gonig to a balanced speaker)
My thanks go to Lee at Lifestyle AV for his patience in letting me borrow one of his Beolab 2000's! Please bear in mind if you are in a hurry for a solution that you can use a Beolink Converter (the latest version that can act as an ML driver) to send any audio input into a Beolab 2000 without needing an audio master. The aim of this project is to acheive this without needing the converter........
I will keep you updated!

Thanks everyone for your kind words!
My daughter Eva Jayne was born on 3rd September, weighing 7lbs 1 oz. Mum and baby are doing fine (and both are sleeping as I type this email!). I am now pleased that I built my new workshop at the side of my home last year, instead of moving to a new workshop at a different site - I can spend time with my family while I work!

that's brilliant
and welcome Eva Jayne !
Congratulations to your new familly member, Steve!
As you can't sleep now, it's a good time to work at night for the Beolab project while your wife is feeding your daughter. This saves time
Congratulations Steve! All the best to your wife and daughter, hope they are happy and well.
Hey, I just bought an audio switchbox from you, hopefully that'll pay for a nappy or two and help out. :-)
Jeff
I'm afraid I'm recovering from the BeoVirus.
Thanks Jeff!
Your switch box is on its way - have a great weekend!
Is Eva a Gold Beoworlder yet?????
Just kidding ... Congratulations!!!!

Hi Steve,
any update on the Beolab2000 project?
Cheers,
-Jonas
Hi Jonas,
I'm really sorry, but this isn't something that I'm working on any longer. The aim was to find a simple solution that could easily be replicated as a kit to send out by post, but as this doesn't appear to be possible, I've moved on to other projects instead.
The official B&O solution is to use an ML/MCL Converter (the later type 1161166) between the audio source and the Beolab 2000 to act as an M/L driver and switch on the speaker. I would recommend this approach, as I was unable to find an easier solution without dismantling the speaker.
Thanks for the update Steve, bummer that there wasn't an easy solution.
The cabling I needed when we spoke at Struer almost a year ago is still on the agenda, we might be moving houses in the reasonable future, so I'll contact you when I know what I need.
Late congrats, but never the less. Hope your family is doing fine.
Too long to list....
Thanks bayerische!
My baby daughter is now 6 months old, so I no longer have to come into work to get some sleep
Yes, its a shame about the Beolab 2000, I have heard from other Beoworlders who have modified their speakers, but other than using the ML/MCL Converter there doesn't seem to be an easily repeatable solution that doesn't need serious internal re-wiring of the speaker.
I have all the cables you need, so please let me know whenever you are ready and I will be happy to help - hope the house move goes well.....
Wouldn't this simply wotk with either test mode 03 or 09 which should both open up for the source input in th absence of an audio master.
I am thinking about this too. when you power up BL2000 it starts to play the current audiostream.

Hi Aleksei,
I am sorry but the Beolab 2000 cable is not available now.
Just a quick update to any future readers of this thread to apologise that the minijack to Beolab 2000 cable is no longer produced as the parts are unavailable. The only solution now is to use a Beolink Converter type 1161166 and link this to the speaker with a Masterlink cable, then you can connect any audio source into the Aux socket of the converter.
Dear Steve,
I wanted to order a ML-Minijack-Cable for my BeoLab 2000 (1641, 11268xxx, but as the link is broken I ended up reading this sad news. It also seems that I've got the wrong Beolink Converter (1615, S/W 1.0, 11246xxx).
Since I've got some ML- and minijack-cables, is there a possibility to solder such a cable by myself?
Best regards, Peter
Talki:is there a possibility to solder such a cable by myself?
You'd just need to connect to the L and R channel inputs in the ML lead - the ML wiring diagram (with wire colours) is here: http://beotech.beoworld.org/wiring4.htm
Guy:You'd just need to connect to the L and R channel inputs in the ML lead
Dear Guy,
thanks for your quick reply. As ML uses symmetric signals (-L [pin 13]/+L [pin 14], -R [pin 15]/+R [pin 16]) I'm not sure which pins should be connected to left/right/ground of the minijack-cable. Can you give me some advice, please?
Masterlink is a balanced signal, hence the + and - for each channel. However, for your purposes I think that you should be OK just connecting to L+ R+ and shield/ground. Don't connect the L- or R- connections to anything.
If it doesn't work, or if the sound quality is poor, then you may need to add some complexity, but I would experiment as I have described first!
it is working perfect (with only a little hum). Thank you very much.
