Since the release of the B&O Configuration Tool there appears to have been some confusion related to working on 32 and 64 bit operating systems and versions of firmware loaded in the Beo5/6

Firstly, the configuration tool WILL work on Windows 32 or 64 bit operating systems. NOTE: generally speaking if you buy a 64 bit computer you will also have a 64 bit operating system loaded. However, sometimes a Windows 32 bit operating system is loaded on a 64 bit computer often because of lack of 64 bit USB drivers. So, when checking if you have a 32 or 64 bit system, check the operating system version, not the hardware type. To check the operating system press START then CONTROL PANEL then SYSTEM and it will be displayed.

Below is a small table showing what will and will not work

*1: Will be updated to 3.00a by the configuration tool next time you download a configuration
*2: Will be updated to version 1.45 on the next configuration download

It should also be noted that if you have a Beo6 with a firmware version for driving the USB on a 32 bit system and the firmware is updated to make the USB use 64 bit, then the Beo6 will no longer be able to be connected to a 32 bit system.

I have not tried it, but it is unlikely to work because of the USB driver rather than the program itself.

Please clarify as to if we need Windows 8 Pro or just the standard Windows 8.

The Configuration Tool will run under the standard Windows 8, but you will need to load the USB driver manually as noted in teh previous thread you posted too.

Keith,

From your overview we can see that BEO5 is only supported on 32 bits platforms. Unfortunately we see that most new pc's are 64 bit pc's.

Can we expect B&O to provide 64 bit support for BEO5? If not, what would you recommend us to do?

Regards

Jan

Jan,

I see no chance of B&O providing a 64 bit firmware for the Beo5 particularly as it is no longer available for sale and if a owner has a fault requiring a screen or processor replacement, then they end up with a Beo6 anyway because tehe Beo5 spare parts are no longer available.

Whilst most PC hardware sold today are 64 bit, you can still install a 32 bit operating system on a 64 bit machine and it will work fine. Its actually only the USB driver which is effected by the change to 64 bit.

You could install a dual Windows operating system on your 64 bit hardware, one for 32 bit applications and one for 64 bit, but unless your normal daily work requires you to have the addressing provided by the 64 bit operating system, then keep with 32 bit. Even Windows 8 is produced for both 32 & 64 bit.
