Moving on from my thread about whether or not to repair my Avant!

Peter planted the thought in my head of a BV5 as a possible replacement. Now i understand these are old but are now relatively affordable and I do like the look of the all black one that lifestyle has!

Questions is will it be stupidly large in my small, old cob cottage? I've just measured our usual viewing distance from the avant screen and it's about 2.5 meters max. Would the BV5 look terrible from that sort of viewing distance?

Also, from those who have one what are they like to live with on a daily basis? Our Avant gets quite a lot of use and has been a pleasure.

Any thoughts, suggestions welcome but I don't want A Beovision 7 and realistically can't spend more than £2000 on a television!

Hi Simon,

That BV5 is nice (if bulky) looking but is also a very dated piece of technology - an old style plasma tube with heavy power consumption, and it weighs a ton, not to mention the lack of HD/modern connectivity. If you are happy to watch in standard definition then I suppose you could be happy with it.

How about a V1, or a used 8-40? People are giving them a hard time here but I think it is an outstanding performer (V1) and the design does grow on you.

At the end of the day though, just get the one you like the most!

Hi Simon, I am interested to know your reasons for dismissing the BV7?

Hi Jc,

I don't like the look of it (at all!) I'd rather by a £500 Panasonic.I've had Avants, Mxs and Lxs and liked all of them both switched on and off! Design is very subjective. I do like the Avant, BV5 and even the Beoplay v1 but I couldn't imagine having a BV7.I think I'd even prefer a BV8.

Hi Simon, totally understand. As you say it is very subjective, I still think the Avant looks superb as well as the 5. good luck with your choice.

Go for it!

The BV5 is the nicest TV I've ever owned. Still resent myself for trading it for a BV10.

Too long to list....

I totally LOVE BV5; along with BV10 is my favourite B&O flat TV.....and i agree, i don't like BV7...is too 'normal' for my tastes !

Go for it if you can; here in Italy i is so difficult to obtain it 'cause it weights > 80 Kgs and nobody is willing to ship it to me :)...but if you can, buy it.

I love that design, especially in odd (read: not gre) colours !

Wonderful sound, perfectly good picture and works fine with Sky via a SCART lead. I replaced an Avant DVD with one - the Avant is now in our smaller sitting room. Have also bought a BV3 which has replaced an aging LX. Also delighted with this. We do have a Panasonic Plasma 42" in the kitchen as only a BV4 would have fitted here and we didn't want the extra box of the BS2/3.

I did have a BV10 for a while which did have a splendid picture but the sound was very thin. I am reliably informed that the BV11 is designed not only as a smart TV but also as a much better sounding one than the BV10. I'll tell you after Wednesday - when I hope to meet both the BV11 and Chris from Corbridge!

Hi

I bought one for a very low price with only 42 days of video use.

Non HD.But compared to my excellent 42 philips led tv, the quality of the picture is still really excellent at 3 meters from the TV.

I have seen MIB3 through my PS3 with optical sound and I was astonished by the whole quality of the set (sound and picture).

I do not regret this purchase and I am not surprised to see that newer bang olufsen lcd TV have not better.

Unfortunately, this tv is hard to find and really heavy.

Best regards

oLivier

Well mine has arrived courtesy of Lifestyle AV and I'm very pleased with it so far. The sound is of course excellent and the picture is better than I expected. It's a big set and I have a small cottage but I'm already getting used to it. It's a shame that B&O didn't carry on with this design as it really is beautifully styled and I do prefer the look to that of the BV10 and 11. Mine's an all black one with the motorised stand.

For 2000€, you can buy a 50" Panasonic VT50 and the following audio processor:

http://shop.emotiva.com/collections/processors/products/umc1

The quality of this tv is much much better than the Beovision 5 and with this processor you can connect a 5.1 B&O audio setup with any problems.

Yes, but a Panasonic looks like.... well, a Panasonic. I would imagine that an ultra-modern plasma panel which requires wall mounting would look quite odd in an old cottage!

The thought of trying to wall mount any television, let alone a 50 inch Plasma on my uneven cob walls would frighten me to death. Would probably bring the house down!

I have no idea why people who come on a b&O forum try to tell people they can buy better, bigger and cheaper. We know that! Except better for me means b&o even if I have to buy a six year old television. My Avant was likewise a second hand purchase and to my mind was money well spent. I hope the Beovision 5 will prove the same.

When the Avant was dying my wife and I discussed whether we should buy a newer Panasonic/Brand X and she very rightly said 'You won't be happy if it's not a b&O' and when I thought about it I knew she was right (as she normally is)

I have a Beocenter 1 since 12 years (I used the Beocenter 1 for SD images and a Panasonic projector (PT-AE5000) for HD images), but the image quality of the news Panasonic plasma is much better than other tv, like Samsung, Philips, Sony and better than most of B&Omodels like Bv10, Bv7-40,Beoplay V1, only Beovision 12 and Bv7-55 are better for me.

With the sound processor you can continue with your B&O audio quality. Nowdays Bv5 is a very very old tv, only SD image and few conections(non HDMI), pay 2000€ for a Bv5 is now totally....

Why buy old porsches ,when newer bmws are cheaper to tax, faster and better mpg.

Because they are design classics, and are different than mass market.

panasonic plasma looks like any other other branded flatscreen.bv 5 certainly not ,and looks like a piece of furniture on and off.simplicity is the key.

Bv5 looks like a very big and heavy old plasma tv with few connections, while a Panasonic looks like a beautiful slim design.

glad your happy with your panasonic, but as WE ARE ON A B&O forum, ask the question which we prefer the boring looking panasonic,or the elegant design icon.Maybe you would be better going on av forum, with like minded people.

Thank you for sharing the pictures

Are both from your current installation, or did you replace the BV5 ?

You shouldn't have added the pictures!! The BV5 looks stunning, the Panasonic just looks plain and, well, boring.....

Hey - in defence of Borjal84, he's free to mention 'other brands' on here!  Yes, we're a B&O Forum - but there are other manufacturers out there..

However, I have to admit, the BeoVision 5 does look miles better than the Panasonic.  I don't think anyone can match B&O when it comes to styling - and the BV5 is simply beautiful.

Whereas I will disagree - I think the BV5 frame looks "heavy", too thick and dated.

I do think now, the frame is a bit "bulky".

May be the BeoVision 10 on easel stand is the successor ! Embarrassed

I think the BV10/11 definitely looks better. However the 10 has nothing like the sound quality of the 5. I have not heard the 5 against the 11 though and the 11 is better than the 10. As far as sound is concerned, bulky is good! Big Smile

Yes Peter,

The sound of the BV10 is really flat compared to the sound of the Avant.

Before the BV10, i had a BeoVision 3. The sound was fantastic.

I knew that sound of the slim BV10 could not match the sound of the BV3.

But the difference is huge !

And before the BV3, i had a BV7 (32') with the marvelous BL7-1 !!! Embarrassed

But that's another story... ! Big Smile

Hi everybody,

When I decided to buy my BV5 for far less than 1000 euros, I simply thought : it's a timeless piece of furniture !

When I will be tired of the plasma screen, I will probably put another one , more recent in front of it and keep using the speakers with ML.

My beosound 9000 is connected to it and I use the TV speakers without powering on the screen.Great feature.

The BV5 is more than just a screen.

I admit that everybody can post here, but most of "pros" panasonic, apple ..., like  "blind people" don't want to see these little things that last and make the differences with other brands.

Their vision is far too short.

Panasonic and apple make really good product, I do not contest this.

Actually, I am more concerned by the poor quality of the programs on tv than by the quality of my screen.

Do we need a 65" screen FULL HD 3D, for looking at stupid and poor programs ;)

One option of course is to upgrade! The way a BV5 is made, one could imagine simply changing the screen and installing a BS3 or similar in the back! Not completely straightforward but I dare say some of the more adventurous members could try!

Well... It has been done, I remember a member on the old forum conducting a project just like that on a BV5...

Does anybody know where that thread can be found? I imagine the result would be tremendous!

You've just got to love the Beovision 5 design, absolutely timeless and overall well balanced. I can't warm to the newer screens which in physical terms are much less 'worth-the-money' (flimsy in comparison to the wood, iron, steel and glass of the BV5 and 9).

Hi Simon,

How is the BV5? I remember you saying in one post that your living room was quiet small, how does it feel in a small room?

The reason I am asking is that I am moving into a small cottage with the living room being 3m x 3.6m and would love a BV5 but was not sure how it would feel in a small room.

Thanks

Hello Toby.

Put simply it's great!

Sound quality is superb and the picture is really pretty good too, especially with a decent source. I watched 'Avengers assemble' on dvd a couple of nights ago and the picture quality was great (I did fall asleep though!) Picture quality on sky varies from superb to a bit blocky but then i guess that's due to different broadcasters choosing different quality bandwidths.

I can't pretend it's not a big item in the corner of my front room. I'm sitting about 2.5 meters from it watching Australia play South Africa at the moment and it's great. Mine is the all black version with the motorised stand and I think it's a lovely thing. i prefer the all black to the silver one which is more common. We've had it about a month now and I already wouldn't want to be without it!

Maybe if an HD one came up at a reasonable price I'd consider upgrading it but otherwise I'm sticking with this one. My room is similar size to yours and once you're over the 'isn't it a bit big?' moment you soon realise that  it's a bit big but it's big and beautiful!

Simon
