What is the best connection for a Beolab 3 to LG TV? Are there specific cables that have Powerlink to 3.5mm or RCA connections? Does it sound good? Thanks.

If the TV doesn't have a variable audio output (a couple of mine do not), then you might look into the BeoPlay connection hub (which seems to be sold out on the BeoPlay site, but other sites have it - at least in the US).

Hi diggs,

Stan and Benoit have covered both options perfectly:-

1) The only way to connect the speakers directly is if the TV has a headphone socket, as this is the only way that the speaker volume can be controlled from the TV remote.  (some TVs have a separate headphone volume setting in the menu, instead of using the main volume buttons on the remote - you can test this by plugging in a pair of headphones).  Please use this cable to connect a pair of Beolab 3 speakers to the TV headphone socket:-

http://soundsheavenly.com/line-in-connection/70--trs-2x7pd-.html

2) If the TV only has an optical output then a Beoplay S8 Connection Hub is needed (£149 GBP from your local B&O store).  This converts the light signal from the optical socket to an electrical signal and allows the TV remote to control the speaker volume.  Please use an optical cable from the TV to the Hub:-

http://soundsheavenly.com/input/149-premium-braided-toslink-optical-cable-with-metal-plugs.html

You now just need one RJ45 splitter and two Powerlink cables to connect two Beolab 3 speakers to the output of the Hub:-

Splitter (1 required): http://soundsheavenly.com/bang-olufsen/27-rj45-powerlink-compatible-splitter-new-powerlink-to-two-8-pin-din-powerlink-compatible-sockets.html

Cables (2 required): http://soundsheavenly.com/powerlink-8-pin-din-connection/20-powerlink-mk-3-compatible-8-pin-din-cable-with-4-cores-wired-low-profile-cable.html

The Beoplay S8 Connection Hub is indeed a good option, but you need a INFRARED tv remote for it.

A lot of modern televisions (like my own Philips) use RF remotes nowadays. The S8 can't 'see' RF commands, so if you have such a remote, it won't work.

I wasn't aware that it is as easy as one single cable to connect my non-b&o television with BL3. I have a sony tv with something that looks like a headphone socket. I can connect a headphone and can hear audio.

Besides the BL3, also possible to connect a BL2 or BL11?

Thanks!

Steve1977 i think the trick is that once you can hear your headphones in the TV, if you adjust your volume on your remote does the headphone volume change?  If so, then it would be one cable :-)

Otherwise nothing can change the volume and they will be at one high volume

Unfortunately there is no headphone jack so I have to go with the optical way. Thank you all for your help.

I think this works. i used to have an A9 connected to it (using line-in) and could change volume with my tv remote. I somehow thought connecting to ML was more difficult than just a cable.

what about the BL2? can use cables to connect BL3/BL2 combo?

Hi Steve 1977,

Yes, you can add a Beolab 2 and Beolab 3s (although these don't have their own volume control like the A9, so they rely on the TV headphone socket to be volume controlled).

Your Beolab 2 subwoofer needs a powered cable to generate the trigger signals that would normally be sent from a B&O television:-

http://soundsheavenly.com/line-in-connection/102--trigger-trs-.html

The Beolab 3 speakers will then plug into the two output sockets on the Beolab 2 using standard Powerlink mk.3 cables (one cable is needed for each speaker):-

http://soundsheavenly.com/powerlink-8-pin-din-connection/20-powerlink-mk-3-compatible-8-pin-din-cable-with-4-cores-wired-low-profile-cable.html

Hi diggs2701,

If your TV only has an optical output then please see my post above which explains how to use a Beoplay S8 Connection Hub to connect to this socket and give control of the speaker volume.

Kind regards, Steve.

Hi Steve 1977,

Yes, you can add a Beolab 11 and Beolab 3s, please use this cable from the TV headphone socket to the Beolab 11 (please note that this is a specially wired cable, not a standard DIN to RCA cable):-

http://soundsheavenly.com/beolab/129-minijack-ipod-pc-etc-to-beolab-11-subwoofer.html

The Beolab 3 speakers will then plug into the two output sockets on the Beolab 11 using standard Powerlink mk.3 cables (one cable is needed for each speaker):-

http://soundsheavenly.com/powerlink-8-pin-din-connection/20-powerlink-mk-3-compatible-8-pin-din-cable-with-4-cores-wired-low-profile-cable.html

Please set the Beolab 11 to "Line" mode and set the Beolab 3s to "L" or "R" as required.

Kind regards, Steve.

Got it, this is a bit confusing. So, the BL2 requires a powered cable, while the BL11 does not. Sorry for asking more questions, but like to make sure that I have understood everything and will buy the right cables.

I have not decided yet whether I will connect my BL2 or BL11 to my non-B&O TV (one stays with my BV7, the other one goes to non-B&O). Currently, my BV2 is connected to the BV7 (in surround setup). If I were to attach the BL11 to my BV7 instead, would I require a different cable or is it as easy as just switching it out. This would probably be my preference and then I would attach the BL2 to non-B&O with the cable above. However, I don't want to turn this into a nightmare and would keep the BL2 attached to the BV7 if this makes life easier. Advice appreciated.

Also, appreciate if you take a brief look at my other thread (http://archivedforum2.beoworld.org/forums/p/16772/212136.aspx#212136). I'd like to bundle my cable purchase to save shipping cost. Thanks!

Hi Steve1977,

Please don't worry, on the Beovision, you can use the same Powerlink mk.3 cable for either subwoofer, it is simply a case of swapping the sub and leaving the cable in place:-

Just checking your other thread in a moment!

Got it. So, BV to BL2/11 works with the same cable, while there is a different cable for headphone to BL2 vs. BL11? Let me switch them out over the weekend and then place my cable order with you. Thanks again for your help!

Sorry for the late reply but just go the cables/hub. Sounds Heavenly was absolutely fantastic. You were absolutely right, the S8 Hub had the speakers work perfectly with no sound adjustment from the TV remote. Any idea how to remedy this? Thanks, a lot of money invested... hahaha.

Hi diggs2701 Glad to hear that you are happy with the cables! For TVs with an infrared remote, the B&O website contains setup instructions that explain how to program the S8Hub to accept volume commands from the TV remote when using the TV optical output. If the TV doesn't have an infrared remote, then you need to use the headphone socket on the TV to connect to the Hub so that the TV can manage the volume sent to the Hub. Kind regards Steve.
