Is it possible to add a £30 Google Chromecast to the Essence mark 1?

Yes, indeed - just use the line-in connection with an appropriate cable.
The line-in has autosense and the Essence will then switch to that input, when you send something to the Comecast. (Note: if 'occupied' by AirPlay, remember to switch that off in the sending device)
And don't forget to set the Chromecast to Full Dynamic Range in the audio settings of the dongle.

So if I do that I can make the Essence mark 1 multiroom?
No, it can make it possible to group the connected Chromecast with other Chromecast devices on your network.
If that is all that you need, all is well.
Perfect - so I'll just buy more Chromecast and connect them to some speakers!
I have Beolab 3 and the Essence.
An old Beosound 8 which I still love - i'll connect an Essence to that.
And....looking at a Beolab 3500 for the kitchen so I can connect an Essence to that too !
