I have a pair of Beovox S45 with a giant water stain on the top. These are my first wooden speakers and I do not have any experience with restoring the wood finish. After having done some reading, I guess that the water has removed all the finish from the veneer, leaving only the original color. However, when I add finish to the bright water mark, I do not get the same finish, so there is always a difference in coloration. I guess my only option is to remove all the finish from the veneer and then re-finish everything so the speakers look uniformly again? Also, does anyone have any tips on how to clean the metal around the cloth?

Mad always, thank you all for your help!

Dear Beosince,

S45 are very lovely and nice playing speakeres, definitely worth for rescue.

You can find a lot about wood treatment of B&O, here for example: https://archivedforum2.beoworld.org/forums/t/5212.aspx, or here (scratches removal): https://archivedforum2.beoworld.org/forums/t/11223.aspx

Do not forget to clean all wood wit isopropyl alcohol, you will see how many dirt/old oii there is over the years.

You can use Old english oil (scrath cover for dark wood) or some wood stain/tint to treat at first only discolorated area separately (several layers of light concentration) and after that treatment of whole area.

Regarding metal strips: they are anodised from factory, but when they are yellowisch(over the years) and you cannot to clean it with alcohol, you can use coarse sandpaper and sand them homogenously to have coarse finish (after covering wooden part with masking tape)

I would say that they are rosewood (Beocom s45-2). I think my only option is to remove all the finish. Is sanding the only option, or has anyone tried the chemical method? I am scared of sanding as I do not want to damage the veneer.

Try to sand it carefully by hand, not with machine. Start with Grind 200 or steel wool.

Very difficult to advice on a solution without as much as a photo of the damage.

I do all my wood work this way:

Clean with ISPA, if needed even with acetone (carefully), sand with 220 grain paper until all surfaces are even, clean with ISPA, sand with 3M maroon hand pad. Clean wth ISPA, wet all surfaces with boiled linseed oil, let soak for 1 hour, wipe off excess with a lint free rag, let dry for 24 hours, sand light with 3M hand pad, clean with moist lint free rag,let dry, wet with linseed oil, let soak, wipe off excess, let dry for 24 hours, polish with lint free rag, done.

I hope this gets uploaded correctly. There are light scratches and a large water mark. I tried re-applying some finish, but it only masked the problem slightly.

After cleaning, sand until the color is the same all over, sand a little more on the scratches, the wood color will be nearly the same, after sanding, as is your watermark, I dont see any problem there.

You could also try "Ring remover" from Liberon.
It gives very good results if the stain is not to deep - in which case you might sand right through it anyways.

I tried a similar product, and that was the result. I think sanding is the only real solution. Has anyone tried removing the finish with paint stripper?

Stripper is too harsh. Follow Søren’s advice.

I should add that was my experience with stripper on veneer. It’s fine for lifting varnish or paint, but that’s not what you’re dealing with here. Sometimes the stripper will cause the veneer to lift and buckle, which would be a tragedy. Good luck with whatever you decide.

After spending some time sanding and oiling, I think I have a result which is good enough so people don’t realize that there was damage, if they don’t know. If I look from the side, the wood still looks a bit “rough” on the water mark. Maybe more layers of finish over time will remove this. I followed Sørens advice!

Impressive results. Great job on the metal trim too.

Right, good job, the rough look comes from the veneer drying out, I have tried with several layers of oil, it got better but never perfect, I even tried with sanding powder mixed with the oil, pressed into the cracks, it got better but never perfect. The good thing is, only people who knows will see it Smile

Thank you both! And thank you for the great advice. I used sanding sponges with different grits and they worked perfectly. Now I only need to repaint the stands as they have collected quite some rust and a few paint chips and the speakers look as good as new.

I made a pair of stands myself, used Hammered spray for painting

Bombastic, this difference before and after the restoration.
Really good job!
Now I have to trust my s45 boxes, they also have such bad water spots.

Very impressive! These look at least a good as the originals in my opinion. I like that yours don’t have a small plastic piece at the top, but are full metal. You should try to sell some, in Germany the stands are going for a pretty penny as they are quite rare.
