Hello Beoworld members,

First of all I would like to thank Classic, Søren Mexico, Dillen, Chartz, Tamtapir and Christian Christensen for the useful information about the Beolab 5000
(my apologies if I forgot to mention one of the others).
I would like to mention Classic's site Beolab.dk full of information, leaflets, other useful/interesting pages and fantastic work he has deliverd.
I am amazed!

**You might skip this waste of time**

Because of my first post I would like a bit of introduction of myself:
My name is Simon, 27 years old and living in the Netherlands.
I'm working as a security engineer, so I have some technical background.
Unfortunately my technical background doesn't reach to the terms of audio, which are a whole kind of other level.
Through my work I have made pleny of experience with tin soldering, although you may prefer silver?

Here's my story how I was caught into the B&O virus:

The name Bang & Olufsen has always been a familiar name to me, but never thought of buying such brand until I got this good opportunity a few months ago.
I went to a thrift store with my girlfriend and they had a Beoplay P6 for a ridiculous price, probably not knowing what they were selling.
So I couldn't recist to buy it and try it out at home. I wasn't blewn away by it when I turned my phone on maximum, until I clicked the + button a couple of times.
I guess many reviewers don't even tried this out, because of the bad reviews, but I have no idea.
This pretty little speaker got me thinking: "With this deal I should search for another one to stereopair with".
I searched a whole lot of places: Ebay.co.uk/com/de, ebay.ancherichten.de (is worth a try!), amazon.co.uk/de/fr
(I recommend to try out the french one, this seems to be less expensive, the exact same 2nd hand product was 110 euro's more on .co.uk) and a auction site.

**And here comes the part you might read further**

Searching on this auction site I stumbled upon a Beolab 5000 system including Beolab, Beomaster, a set of Beovox 2500 cubes and a set Beovox 5000's.
After a few days of keeping track of this item, still no-one had made a bid, so decided to make the lowest one possible, the auction still going for 5 more days.
After bidding, I was directly overbid a couple of times.
And then, silence....

There were no bids done anymore and I got myself a Beolab 5000 system, again, for a ridiculous price.
Not even knowing what kind of condition it really is.

Now I only need to be patience because it takes a few weeks before it get's delivered to me.
So I started to gather myself information about the product and found out the different setups mentioned on Classic's website.
Reading more and more about the Beolab 5000 I got more and more excited.
Even that excited that I already found a set of Beovox 3000 type 6220 speakers in Germany and going to for E40,- pickup this weekend (Ebay-ancherichten).
They aren't optical in perfect state, but the speakers self seem in very good condition, so this to seems to me a pretty good buy (opinions?).

This is what I can tell about the pictures on the aution site (I will probably upload them later).
The Beolab/Beomaster 5000 is not tested and looks like it has been in a very smokey room. (The sliding points and cable are orange/brown. Yes I will definitely buy these by Dillen or Classic :) )
The Beovox 2500 cubes misses a cover and they had some broken corners.
The Beovox 5000 seems to be turned yellow to overtime due to smoke (I don't know yet which type these are).

I have the follow questions:

-I am thinking about giving a shot to replace the electronic components, because of enough experience with soldering.
Does anyone highly discourage?

-Does anyone prefer silver over tin? It needs a higher temperature to work with, but the impendance is better. Any thoughts?

-Because of getting these Beovox 3000's I'm already thinking about building a Weidth Control Switch myself.
I have searched a lot on this forum and have seen a few pictures of Classic and Chartz self-built ones, but came to the conclusion the diagram of the Weidth Control Switch is not online.
Is anyone willing to send me this file, to make a self-built one? This would make it a lot easier.

-The Beovox 3000 comes in 3 versions: the 6210: Bass 10" Isophon PSL 245, Mid-range Peerles G 50 MRC, Tweeter 2 Seas 5-TV-HF
the 6220: Bass unit One 25cm, Tweeter One 2 DOME.
the 6238: Bass unit One 25cm, Mid-range DOME unit, Tweeter 2-5cm.
Does anyone have experience with all these 3 or has an opinion which one could best be used as centerspeaker?

-I can't seem to find service manual of the Beovox 3000 (not the panel-version), does anyone know where I could find these?

-Is there even a service manual of the Beovox 2500? Or does it only have the 8uF and speakers?

-Frede mentions on his site 3 setups for the Beolab 5000.
But there isn't any explanation how to connect Cube 3 and 4 to the Beolab. Is this the way of putting them "directly" into speaker2 by using a connection box?
Something tells my I will stumble upon some cubes again sometime.... O:)

I'm sorry if I bored you out and you got bothered by my questions.

Thank's already for your time, that's for all now! To be continued...

Regards,

Simon

today I bought the Beovox 3000 speakers and I noticed a weight difference between the speakers of 0.7kg.

Could anyone explain this?

As I'm using only one as centerspeaker, I probably have the other one as spare. Can I make anyone happy on the forum?

Here's also the picture of the auction site

I'm already very happy with this result! The table is already sanded, I'm awaiting the Beovox 5000's so I can decide which color will suite best.

Any other suggestion than a rubber mat against vibrating? Maybe "locking" it by putting something between the top of the Beovox 3000 and the table? Or should I just put it in the floor?

Dear Simon,

congratulation to your new Beosystem 5000, it is very nice stuff. Beoworld is the best plate to discuss it here. I entrusted renovation of my BL5000 to Frede Cristensenm (Classicaudio), you can find his VERY high credibility over this forum. I can help you very little.

Yellow color of sliders is not because cigarette smoke, it is just because aging of plastics from 1968. Worth to replace.

Beovox 3000 was recomended as centre speaker for this system, but type 6238.

Dear Priklep,

Thank you very mutch for your answer, really appreciated.

I mentioned Classic above, he delivers incredible work!

Sad to hear I drove 1000km for the wrong speakers, but we had fun. I know the 6220 doesn't have the midrange speaker. The pictures below are from the English user manual and they mention the 6210 as centerspeaker (these had midrange speakers too). Of course compared to the 6220, the 6238 is the closest to the 6210, but I'm curious how you get the information the 6238 was recommended for the Beolab 5000.

That's the question of how complete it will be, as in: what condition will it be.

It get's delivered next friday, I can't wait!!!

I've also got myself a set of Beovox 3000 type 6210 reserved for €40, which seems a good deal to me. And untill now it's the only type mentioned by B&O as centerspeake, what I could've found.

Kind regards,

Simon

Shame you are in the Netherlands - I have a pair of Beovox 5000 Mk3s (the ones with dome tweeters) which are available for nothing to anyone who would like them. I did have them serviced some years ago by Recone Lab - the oval midrange units needed new surrounds- and there a chip on the veneer at the back of one of them but they are the pair shown on Beocentral. (we used the same photo on this site as it is mine!)

There is a service manual for the 2500 although not much in it - I'll see if I can find it for you - a single sheet if I remember. The user manual is on site.

I would re-iterate what has been said already - a 5000 system from Classic Audio will always be as good as you can get.And visiting Frede is wondeful - one of the most hospitable and kind man I have ever met.

Dear Peter and Priklep,

Unfortunately there were some miscommunications on deliverytime. Hate to keep you waiting, but it's even more frustrating for me. Now it will be delivered this tuesday. Hopefully I have enough time to take a good look at it and upload some pictures, because I have a wedding the rest of the week.

I'm really thinking about visiting Frede. I've read nothing but good about and from him and won't doubt he will deny a visit request (this man deserves a medal).  But knowing he already has reached the respectable age of 75, I'm wondering if I should bother him.

If the Beovox 5000's turn out to be very bad, I won't hesitate to make a trip to you, 2 weeks ago I've made a 1000km trip for the wrong type of Beovox 3000 to use as a centerspeaker in the future (see previous post).

Thanks for the interest of the delivery Priklep, I will try to keep you up to date as soon as possible.

Kind regards,

Simon

The package came today!

I will post the pictures from least worse to the worst. At least the receiver and amplifier (from 1967) seem to be in the best condition,  but don't know yet if I should open them. TheBeovox5000 MK1's are rusty and the rubber of the woofer seem to be affected by this rust.

The Beovox 2500 are in the worst condition. One is bend on its stand, theyhave both damaged tweeters and there are only 8 out of 12 dustcovers. I could simply refurbish the two into one good beovox 2500 and use it as tweeter for the centerspeaker I want to use in the future. I could search for replacement parts but will be very hard to. Or I could ask Classic Audio for the possibilities or maybe donate them.

Any opinions so far?

Kind regards,

Simon

Hmmmm…...they do require a little attention to bring them back to a respectable condition. It can be done with some panels from Frede and some new curser lens from Martin and a fair amount of work from yourself, but this work is well worth the effort.....good luck and keep us informed of your progress.

To be fair, my 5000 system arrived at Frede'sin worse condition as a friend of mine had stored in in a wet basement so they were very rusty. Dear Frede essentially scrapped them and gave me new ones and used mine for parts! See how you get on. I would , if you run into problems- give you the 5000s and would lend you my 2500s until you found a decent pair or got yours repaired. After a while you will hanker after a 4401 and then you are in trouble! There is no cure at that point!

Dear Simon,

I can imagine your frustration when looking to those rusty and dirty scrap. But you have wedding ahaed (good luck from me). Do not turn the system on.

BUT:

most of the stuff is very dirty, and it will look much better when you clean it from dirt, may be it smells also (keep it on fresh air)

front pannel on Beomaster and both wooden panels look very good, no buttons are missing

Write an email to Frede, he will guide you.

Thanks everyone for the kind and supporting words.

Yes they are very dirty, this is how they arrived and didn't have the time to clean them up yet.

I won't turn them on, only checking the Beovox 5000's how they sound on my BM901 and they seem ok. Maybe too big for my place, but I will pick up a second Beovox 3000 in the near future.

Is "pickup text" as shown on the previous pictures original? And why?

Hear are some pictures of the Beovox 5000. I noticed that there are no B&O logo's on the legs, as it should be on the MK1 according to ClassicAudio's website. The covers look good and have a goldplated logo.

Never seen the pickup text before - I don't think is B&O. Those speakers are not too bad - the brackets will clean up and the bass unit looks worth cleaning - the mid-rahges look a bit rougher - I think the tweeters are the same as in the 2500s.

Text on blask metal side plate is not original of course, hope it is only a sticker.

Regarding Beovox speakers: rust on clamps and screws is only a cosmetic issue, can be easily treated with steel brush and preservative matal cleaner in spray. You can find a lot about veneer treatment in beoworld forum, this was nicest part of DIY work for me. Leg polishing would be also easy, I hope.

Hello everyone,

Sorry for the silence, as I had a few busy weeks and then went of for a 2 week holiday.

But I'm back and disambled some parts of the Beolab 5000.

I've cleaned the Beovox 5000 and the inside of the boxes did not have any sign of corrosion, plugged them into my Beomaster 901 and sound amazing.

Unfortanetely I don't have enough time to post all the pictures of the Beolab 5000 I've made today on the Beoworld forum, but I made a wetransfer link who is still available for 6 days: https://we.tl/t-ktTzgABwar (if this is ok to post here).

Hopefully someone can guide me of where to start first, if I even should start renovating this.

Kind regards,

Simon

Looks to me like you have already started.....you have done lots of dismantling, you need to get everything cleaned up and get some capacitors on order, check out my threads for some clues as to what to do and what to use......lots of advice was given to me whilst I renovated mine and all that help is still there for you to benefit from....good luck ;¬)

Hello Craig!

What a coincidence! I'm already reading your threads right at the moment and am at page 7.

Did you use Soren Mexico's list of transistors/capacitors or do you recommmend any other?

Yes I've already started and have almost finished the Beovox 5000. I'm probably gonna get called names for sanding it to a much lighter colour than the original rosewood colour, but I think it looks amazing this way and will suit up better in my house.

I also treated myself with a Beogram 1600 which I found in a thriftstore and runs pretty good. I wonder what stories it could tell if it could talk. It's a 5713 which were sold in France, the main transformer is replaced by a 110V unit and the plug is from GB and it came with a "step up & down transformer" which means it was used probably in the Netherlands (why else would it be in a Dutch thriftstore?). There's also not a lot information about the 1600 in general, which make me wonder if these are rare or just uncommon.

As I typed this I was trying to upload the photo's of the Beogram and Beovox, but uploading seems to have some issues.

Kind regards,

Simon

Nice to hear, that you allready started with renovation.

Regarding wood work: veneere after sanding is allways lighter, after oil treatment IT will darken a bit.

Dear members,

I finally replaced all capacitors and most transistors, all thanks to Søren Mexico's orderlist from Mouser.

I've read on the forum that the transistors on the mainboard are best to maintain original. I've tested these transistors on the mainboard with a cheap semiconductor analyzer and need to be changed as expected, because they are very bad.

Now is my question which transistor is the best replacement?

SE8002 ~ BC141

SE7001 ~ ?

37740 ~ 2N5320

37741 ~ 2N5322

Hopefully someone can help me out here.

Kind regards,

Simon
