I was wondering whether I can connect BL speakers to a non-B&O television using an ML/NL converter. Idea is to use the ML/NL line-in and then the PL to connect with the BLs. I am sure there will be audio, but would seek guidance whether video and audio will be in sync with such a setup. Thanks for your help!

Hi,

This will be possible, but you may get lip-sync issues on either the NL or ML side of your network, depending on which other B&O products you have got connected.

Is there any particular reason why you wish to use the NL/ML converter please?  Are the Beolab speaker linked to other NL or ML products in the same room or elsewhere in the house?

If you can please tell us more details of your system then we should be able to give you clearer advice!

Kind regards, Steve.

Thanks. the lipsync issues are what i'm worried about.

purpose is to have my non-b&o television connected to beolabs and at the same time being able to integrate the beolabs into a NL setup.

so, i can watch television using my beolabs.

also, i can play via beomusic app deezer on the beolabs. or join a multi-room play.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.  You could use an Essence or Moment for this (these don't have a lip-sync issue if the Network Delay setting is reduced to 50mS or less).  The NL/ML Converter should work in a similar way as a connection point for speakers (although it isn't a music source like the Essence or Moment), although I haven't tried using the NL/ML converter in this way myself.

Kind regards, Steve.

In order to have 'B&O multiroom' you need at least two NL products in your setup.

The NL/ML Converter is not a NL device - it is just a bridge between ML and NL...

....with the addition of being able to connect an analog sound source and BeoLab speakers for local playback.

There is a tv - and there is a BV

i already use one ml/nl to play deezer to a BV5. the source is an a9. this works flawless. i can play a9 and bv5 in-sync or also just play deezer on one of the two.

i'm thinking to buy a second ml/nl to get my non-b&o into the mix and connect BLs to it. are you sure there would be a lipsync issue? i don't want to use my non-b&o television as a source, but my primary interest is to connect my non-b&o television to beolabs and secondary to play deezer to the beolabs.

essence is also a good idea and may indeed serve the same purpose. the essence has line-in and PL, so it should work?

out of curiosity, why does this work (but the ml/nl may not). in my use case, i'm not even using ML on my ml/nl as i'm just using line-in and PL (same as i would on the essence).

There is a delay between the Line-In and PL speakers on the ml/nl.  There seems to be an assumption that the line-in audio will always be distributed to NL, and therefore is always digitized.  To play on the local PL, the digital is taken back to analog.  Therefore, you have the delay of AtoDtoA in the audio stream.

I had my turntable hooked up to my nl/ml for a while, and it was odd.  Drop the needle, hear the unamplified sound from the tonearm, then it comes out of the speakers.  It wasn't horrible, but it was odd.  I decided to keep my BL Active for local speaker play.

The Essence works similarly by default (delay), but gives you the opportunity to turn off the "delay".  Turning off the delay also prohibits the linein audio from being distributed on the NL.  For whatever reason, the ml/nl doesn't give you this option (that I can find).

I'm not sure what you think the ml/nl would give you over the Essence.  They cost about the same (if you buy the Essence without the wheelie).  You already have a ml/nl so your Essence can access whatever ML sources are available through it.   The ml/nl also needs a hardwire to ethernet for NL whereas the Essence can run wirelessly.  Maybe I'm missing something...
