I have a Beocenter 5000 which I purchased new in the the 1980s. The stylus/cartridge now needs replacing. I have scanned the internet and found some second hand ones on ebay from the USA. Since the inner parts of the cartridge wear out with age is it advisable to buy these second hand ones or would it be better to purchase a new one from Soundsmith or some other supplier?

I wouldn't buy via eBay as you have no idea how much they have been used or what condition they are in. They can have channels out, suspension failure but the sellers half of the time say 'untested as I haven't got speakers', 'works fine' etc just so they can offload it.

eBay is a lottery - you might get a good one or you may get something that doesn't work at all. Repair yours as you know where it has been.
