Does anybody know if its possible to use two beolab 5s as front and centers an two beolab 3s as rears with a non b&o tv. At the minute my buluray player is decoding and sending 5.1 to the beosystem 3, but because there isn't a center channel i have no speech thanks. The bluray has to be the processor.
Put it in speaker 4 mode.
For some reason the beo4 remote seems to not be changing the speaker modes, I’ve even considered buying a beo5 just to see if that would work. it sometimes changes between front speakers to all speakers, so I know it’s not the batteries or signal. Any other ideas thanks?
cooldude:Put it in speaker 4 mode.

7 speakers are to bulky under flat tv and Beolab 5s would be a waste as just l and r
You’re correct.
I will go for BL 7.4
I know I could add a speaker, yet what do people do when they’ve got a screen coming down from the ceiling. Not everybody would want a speaker left sitting on its own.
I would get the speaker down from the ceiling too ;-)
I had a first a BL7-1 on the stand (there was a dedicated stand available in the past) and placed the speaker on a low board underneath the BV4. Screen droped down to cover the screen for avoid reflections. Later I replaced the 7-1 with a 7-4, just put it on the low board. worked.
The beocenter 3 should be able to port the center channel to both L+R speakers no?
Any AVR can do this (I'm using a Marantz one with Lab 9s as fronts without center speaker).
I must admit, having such omnidirectional beasts act as center is not optimal, voices don't really come from the screen area unless your speakers are placed right next to the screen (1.5 - 2m apart from each other..). Mine aren't, so I'm looking for a solution which doesn't ruin the clean look of the setup. For now, I have placed an older Bose center speaker inside my floor convector, firing upwards. The result is rather ok.

Hey there.
It should be possible to define what you want in the menu. But I guess you want several different speaker modes to choose from, of which the one you described is only one. In that case a Beosystem 3 with AST and a Beo 5 or 6 remote should do the trick. With AST you can flexibly assign speaker roles to different speakers and define speaker scenarios comparable to what you can do with several light controllers in a room. Unfortunately there is no way of switching between scenarios without a properly programmed Beo 5/6. Beo 4 can't do it and there is no command. Speaker 1-5 won't work. If you have an MK1 type 9600 Beosystem 3 you will probably run into trouble as well since those to the best of my knowledge do not have AST. But you will most likely need AST to do what you want if I recollect correctly. Therefore, you need at least an MK2 Beosystem 3. For remote controlling AST only Beo 5 and Beo 6 are suitable. All other remotes are unable to control AST. I have fiddled around with a similar issue quite some time ago and was surprised that nobody on here told me about the need of AST and Beo 5/6 to make proper use of it. I always thought this informaton was common knowledge, but apparently not. Maybe the same holds true in your situation now?
Greetings,
Kai

A ‘phantom center channel’ should not be a problem....if you sit in rhe right place.
However, this is only possible (with the BSys3) in stereo mode/with a stereo source.....and the op wanted to play 5.1 content!
As a workaround I’d play the 2.0 track from the bluray disc and set the BSys3 to Speaker 4.
Definitely not the best solution.
But the only way to have the dialog mixed into the main speakers.
Or rather - I’d seriously think about adding a center speaker......aesthetics aside. It is the most important speaker in a 5.1 setup.
