Dear members,

congratulations for this very informative forum.
I am new to Beogram turntables and just bought my first Beogram 4002 on Ebay.
After a first look my impression is mixed. The overall condition seems fine but I am facing a problem with the tone arm lowering / track detection. I could not find something related in this forum, that is why I am writing you now.
Please check the video below in order to get an idea of the problem.
I will try to summarize the problem as follows:
When I press the tonearm lowering button, the tonearm is not just lowering at the very same position. While the tonearm lowers, the whole carriage is moving inward until the needle touches the vinyl. The result is that the end position has an offset by 10 millimeters.
The start position also has the same offset with one exception. When I start the system the first time after it was disconnected from power for a certain period of time, the cartridge lowers at the correct position. From the second start onwards you again have this offset.
With my limited technical knowledge it seems to me as I have an electronic malfunction here.
Do you have any idea that the problem is and how to fix it?
Many thanks in advance.
Ulf

Hi Ulf,

Looking at your video it looks like the tangential tracking drive sensor is out of adjustment. When the arm begins to lower the tangential drive takes over and is just out of adjustment enough to tell the drive motor to keep advancing the arm. When the arm finally reaches the record there is enough force against the groove to stay down and in the groove. That is not a good situation however, so I wouldn't use the Beogram until you fix the problem. You could damage the cartridge. The service manual has an adjustment procedure for the tracking sensor. It could be as simple and turning a couple screws to much more complicated where additional mechanical adjustments have to be made.

There is a bunch of information on Beogram 400x repairs/restoration on the forum here and on the Beolover Blog here. Both places have postings that describe adjusting the tangential tracking.

Dear Sonavor,

many thanks for your analysis. I simply did not now what issue to look for.

I will check the manual and beolover and try to solve it on my own.

I will test it next weekend and will share my results!

One quick check is to remove the platter and just run the Beogram without it. The arm should go to the first set down position, lower and try to move forward as if it were on a record. A properly adjusted Beogram will just lower in place and remain there. As it tries to move forward on its own just press stop or cue up (or one of the scan buttons) to stop it. You do need a cartridge attached for this test so make sure you have the protective plastic cover for the cartridge on it.

Dear Sonavor,

many thanks for your help. I was able to readjust the tangential tracking and the system is running perfectly now. The beolover Videos were helpful too. Due to your indications I knew what I have to look for.

Have a nice weekend.

Ulf
