I recently saw a really beautiful high resolution movie on my TV with a friend and it was a stunning experience, both in sound and graphics. Perhaps anyone has their own recommendations on movies that really requires a good system? The movie I´m talking about now is called Samsara, heres a trailer.

I tend to have a soft spot for movies that offer stunning visual imagery, although too often lately the big name movies are millions and millions for CGI effects wrapped around a mediocre plot and writing.
The Hunger Games is short on special effects but heavy on beautifully filmed woods and outdoor places. Blade Runner is of course both visually stunning and a great movie. The original Alien, and Alien 3, great imagery.
I saw Jarhead recently, kind of a so so film about a bunch of Marines in the Gulf War, it nevertheless had some stunning, if disturbing, imagery. Walking along after Saddam set the oil wells on fire, black from horizon to horizon, flaming oil rigs spewing smoke, and it raining black oil. Some truly gruesome depictions of the aftereffects of air strikes on convoys.
Oblivion had some interesting visuals. Sometimes I call movies that have great visuals but are otherwise bad a guilty pleasure. Like 10,000 BC, great, stunning images, absolutely god awful movie.

Chris Townsend:It's a good question. I've just gone from an 11-46 to a 7-55. The difference in quality and detail is beyond subtle. Films I watched out of curiosity have now become spectacles. Prometheus for anyone who has followed the Alien series could have been much better, but as a technical feat on the. 7 it's fantastic. Last night we watched the Loan Ranger and not only was the quality of the image excellent, but the closing scene with William a Tell playing, sounded amazing too. Some Blurays like Clash of the Titans in my case, are of very poor quality. How do we know what's good quality with Blurays? I can get better quality music, why not better quality DVDs. For a good quality factual programme, and if you want to see where we live up in Newcastle go to BBC Iplayer and watch Border Country in HD by Rory Stewart. Not only a great programme pictorially, but and as I predict the future PM of our country a very interesting watch.(I live just east of Hexham)

Movie wise on me old BV4 - The Musketeers in HD is a good view
Tron:Legacy. Great effects, plenty of opportunities to appreciate handling of black, and amazing soundtrack. The plot though is nothing to write home about.

When I received my BV11-55 I went out and bought several films which are stunning on the TV. Of note are the last two Batman films, 2001, Prometheus, inception, apocalypse now. I streamed Samsara and I am sure as a BR it would be fantastic. I have to invest in Blade Runner BR, as the plain old DVD does not look that great. Same goes for Akira Kurosawa RAn, which on DVD is a horrible transfer.

Tron was excellent on the Avant, and Star Trek (the one with Chris Pine and Zach Quinto) also great.

I use Tron: Legacy a lot when I'm checking our loudspeakers in various configurations. I don't really care about the visuals (my eyes are usually closed while I listen...), and certainly not because of the plot, but because of the job they did on the 7.1 mix. If you have your loudspeakers configured the same way as the re-recording engineer did when it was mixed (at 0º, ±30º, ±90º, and ±130º), it sounds great! I typically use the light cycle scene. For example, have a listen for the way the announcer's voice echoes backwards (front -> surround -> back) while the crowd sounds flow in the opposite direction.
The scene in Gravity starting just before the debris starts flying (where George Clooney is telling a story about New Orleans) is also good for large-scale surround systems. It's a bit disorienting with the various voices coming in from everywhere, but I guess that was the point...

If I had a 'big' B&O TV and 5.1 speakers, the first films I think I'd like to see 'Koyaanisqati' and it's sequel 'Powaqatsi'...
For those who don't know about these, they're 'wordless documentaries' juxtaposing amazing scenes and images from around the globe,with a powerful score by Philip Glass and involving Francis Ford Coppola in production. They blew me away when I first saw them in the 80's & 90's at the cinema, and I think they're now available on Blu-Ray. It's a bit of an 'arty', suggestion, but even fast-forwarding through to the best scenes & music should give your screen, speakers and brain a treat!
Interstellar on Avant 55 was magical. The scenes when the spaceship was shaking sat the Avant on work, both with audio and vision (a true AudioVision). Really good bass, even with just the internal speakers.

In addition to what was listed here Godzilla was great with the BL19, BL1 and 11-55. Last night I watched Mad Max, and that visually stunning and the BL19 had a great workout.
Not sure if i had mentioned it earlier but Apocalypse Now was superb - you could hear the helicopters coming in from one side to the other.
Since I have had the setup i have not gone to the cinema. IMAX in 3D still cannot be replicated at home, but everything else I rather have popcorn in my living room.
