As the title says ....

How to check a BV8-40 for

(1) Mark I or II, and

(2) System Module installed ?

I have acquired a BV8-40 ...

(1) I am pretty sure it is a Mark II, but is there a simple (Service Menu ?) check that confirms this ?

(2) The System Module connections are present (RF out, ML, AV4) but they do not appear to be active (menu options that should be there do not appear); does this mean:

? the BV8-40 was different, it had the wiring in place, and just needs a chip/board inserted ?, or

? the module needs activation - is this a service menu option ?, or

? do I need to arrange a service call ?

PS I have set V-OPT 2 .... I think .... does it show up in a 'Service Menu' readout ?

(3) I also have the strange situation where AV1 appears to only process the VIDEO signal via the SCART and not repeat NOT the AUDIO - I think it is a defect, as I have tried two different sources, and two different SCART cables, and they work on AV2 but not AV1 :-(

or is there something I am missing in the setup parameters ?

And finally (so far) I can't seem to see V-AUX ... V-AUX2 !?!?!?!

All a bit of a puzzle really, but hopefully some one can help me, so I don't have to wait for the B&O service to open in some 36 hours time :-(

The product label will tell you:

Type 9560 = Mk1
Type 9562 = Mk2
Type 9563 = Mk2 (no tuner version for Brazil, Canada, Mexico, USA)

Looking at the connectors will tell you;

3rd SCART , ML connector and socket for RF Video distribution available >> System Module built in.

Downloading the UG & Supplement may also help  Big Smile

http://www.bang-olufsen.com/user-guides?cat=Televisions&prodid=312

All these issues about no video at certain inputs an so on could require a service tech to drop by ...

Before calling him? / her? and ONLY if you are familiar with the "service menu" you could try to

- disconnect ALL cables and wait several minutes before restoring power again
- enter the service menu and trigger a "reset  to factory default"  (you'll loose all settings)
- disconnect power again for several minutes .
- reconnect the cables and finnaly restore power

- if this solved the issues - be happy an set up your TV
- if not - "call the doctor"

GOOD LUCK

Thanks Vienna ! for this and your other post ...

This is what I would regard as B&O silliness !

Why rename V.AUX (there must be hundreds of people who use this option) when instead they could rename V-AUX2 (surely Shirley fewer people would have used that label !!!)

Anyway it is a relief to know that this is not a symptom Smile

But sure is annoying that I will need to think things through or my Beo 4s will become button/function/source incompatible .............

Thanks Magus, that is an excellent tip !

Yes, the two versions of the manual (Beworld PDFs) do have a 2xHDMI and 3xHDMI as one differentiator

And my unit has 3xHDMI Big Smile wooo hoooooo

Interesting though, the PDF that is labeled "BV8-40mk2_user-eng" if different from and better than the printed version I have which seems to be at some half-way house of publishing - all I can say (every time I do this) is THANK YOU to Peter, Keith & Lee for all the hard work and schmoozing they did to get us these invaluable resources !

I also have the strange situation where AV1 appears to only process the VIDEO signal via the SCART and not repeat NOT the AUDIO

Maybe the S/P-DIF (digital sound) had been activated on AV1 by the previous owner and is still "on"
(even if  the menu pretends to be set to "none").

In this case it is a software issue and might be cured by triggering a reset to factory default,
(and this could also cure the sys-module problem).

But, who knows, maybe an older sys-module has just been "plugged in" without updating the complete
SW to the same "build"  ...

In this case and if it's a "real" hardware problem - call for the doc ...

I recently purchased a defective BV8 with broken panel.

A (strange) label at the back indicated that there was a system module mounted. But whem I got it, it was apparently removed.

So only  2scarts to start with.

I got  a system module from my dealer and he told me that after installation of the mosule, the BV8 had to be (software)updated to get acces to the system module. After the update, I got the AV4 appeared and the ML got working.

But as Vienna already mentioned, try the "Factory settings".

Only the basic settings are restored and not the specific "calibrated" picture settings.

Factory settings looks like you bought the tv new and you start with the language settings.

My  BV8-26 software versons are:

Excellent BeoBuddy !

Thanks for the picture, it was only when I started the line by line comparisons that I picked up some important information !!

As you can seen the type matches Vienna's feedback for a Mark II, and more importantly the "System Module" (highlighted) shows "n/a" Sad

But I will try the Factory Settings refresh ..................

I tried the easy option first .... I tried to fool the S/P-DIF option by toggling the option from none to 1 to 2 to none again but all to no avail, so factory refresh is coming up now

Type 9562 = Mk2

as per the photo and the HDMI connector port count, this is a Mark II .... yay Big Smile

Vienna:
3rd SCART , ML connector and socket for RF Video distribution available >> System Module built in.

all connectors present and correct sir !

but as the photo shows, the software does not think it is present, so factory reset seems on the cards

Thanks - I had got the Beoworld manuals (plus the printed one in the box), but the supplements will be helpful.

I am puzzled that the BV8-32 had a reference manual, but it looks like the BV8-40 does not have one !

Vienna:

Sad

do I really have to disconnect all the cables ? Crying

I broke my back connecting them all yesterday Laughing

Anyway I shall JUST DO IT Yes - thumbs up

do I really have to disconnect all the cables ?

I broke my back connecting them all yesterday

broke my back again Smile

followed Vienna's instructions, and went to check "Monitor Service Information" and checked and the "System Module" is still 'n/a' and the V-OPT is back to "1" *sigh*

tried resetting V-OPT ... once from memory (no change) ... twice using common sense (no change) *sigh*

retuned FTA analogue

noticed B&O logo not appearing prior to the curtains opening *sigh*

retuned FTA digital

"B&O" logo appears on DTV Smile

Assigned all the connections (including getting fancy and labelling sources with names Smile)

:

:

BUT, still no audio on AV1 ... no System Module ... and no matter how I try I can't get V-OPT to become "2", where as I was able to do that yesterday

I guess I could try another Factory Reset ... but I am more inclined to get the B&O technician involved

Thanks Vienna, and all the rest of you who posted ... it was wonderful to get that level of support ... many, many thanks -- have a beer on me, no, have three !!!

... BTW, can you remind me what OPTs 3, 5 and 6 are for ?

A.OPT for audio components like BSd 4, Ouverture,...

V.OPT for video components like BVi 7 / 8 / ...

L.OPT for link products like BLb 3500, BeoLink Aktive, ...

Main-system:
1 and 2

Link rooms:
5 and 6 functions correspond to 1 and 2 but are for secondary "slave" components in additional "Link" rooms
4 functions correspond to 2 but need "LINK"

0 = IR disabled - unit can only be operated manually or receive commands via ML

1 = accepts NO commands for "the other side" of main AV system
V.OPT 1 only commands for video sources like TV, V.MEM, ..
A.OPT 1 only commands for audio sources like CD, RADIO, ...

2 = accepts all commands for audio and video
(eg TV receives all commands and sends the audio commands to the audio system in A.OPT 0

3 = not used in the ML system

4 = accepts all commands for audio and video (functions corresponds to 2)
BUT you'll either have to press "LINK" before the command or have to select a"L.xxx" command
from the "LIST"  - used to adress eg an additional  BLb 3500 in your living room where the main
      system is also installed.

5 = accepts NO commands for "the other side" (local components and main AV system)
V.OPT 5 only commands for video sources like TV, V.MEM, ..
A.OPT 5 only commands for audio sources like CD, RADIO, ...

6 = accepts all commands for audio and video ((local components and main AV system)
local components have priority - if you have a BSd 9000 in your main room (A.OPT 0/1/2)
and a BSd 4 (A.OPT 6)  in your secondary room
       - pressing CD will start the local CD of the BSd 4
       - pressing LIST > LINK >CD will get you the sound from your 9000

PS: Just an idea - did you check the sys-module is sitting firmly in it's slot ? Unplug the power
if you want to check this ...

Thanks once again - you are the OPTIONS wizard !

Vienna:
5 = accepts NO commands for "the other side" (local components and main AV system)
V.OPT 5 only commands for video sources like TV, V.MEM, ..
A.OPT 5 only commands for audio sources like CD, RADIO, ...

the X-OPT 5s seem identical to their OPT 1 cousins on your explanation, but I am sure there is some subtle difference

I am asking this because I set my BS4 and BV8-32 from OPT 2 each, to OPT 1 each when I collocated them, but that seems to have messed up the ability to handle N.MUSIC on either system !

Vienna:
PS: Just an idea - did you check the sys-module is sitting firmly in it's slot ? Unplug the power
if you want to check this ...

I was not sure if you just meant "push hard", since with all the cable seating I think I had pushed already against the outside of the system module.

but I powered off and pushed anyway - there appears to be no "give" in the plate/connectors when I push.

Did you mean that I should unscrew the plate of connectors, and go inside the BV8 to push home the logic card ?

Hardly to answer if this are the right option setings without a sketch showing ALL components and ALL rooms (zones)
of your  ML-system and a brief description of rooms and required functions ...

But:

"N-MUSIC" is an audio command. And a TV in "V.OPT" "1" or "5" requires therefore:
"AV" + "NETMUSIK"  = "A-N.MUS"  from the "LIST"  + "GO" to get the sound ...

Maybe this is also useful for similar cases:
http://www.bang-olufsen.com/UserFiles/File/ug/beo4/beo4_lexicon_english.pdf

Reading the userguide helps (sometimes), eg. page 9:
http://www.bang-olufsen.com/UserFiles/File/ug/BeoSound4/beosound4_userguide_english.pdf

BSd 4 reqires setup for external audio sources like "A.AUX", "N-Music", ... in the setup menu of the BSd 4 Big Smile

OPT 0 can be used for linkmasters and linkslaved to disable IR

 OPT 1 / 2 is ONLY for the main-system (linkmaster(s) >>  max 1 audio- and 1 video-master per system)

typical config for an integrated AV setup in ONE room with all speakers to the TV but none to the audio
V.OPT 2 & A.OPT 0

typical config for an integrated AV setup in TWO rooms with speakers to the TV as well as to the audio
V.OPT 2 & A.OPT 2

special config  for an AV setup in ONE room with speakers to the TV as well as to the audio
V.OPT 1 & A.OPT 1 (use "LIST" >> "AV" + "SOURCE" to get audio to TV and video to audio system

OPT 4 / 5 / 6 is for for ALL units in linkrooms (linkslaves)

OPT 4 & / 6 are "cousins" of OPT 2 for secondary "slave" components - but 4 reqires "LINK" before every command

OPT 5 is the "cousin" to OPT 1 for secondary rooms

Also have a look here, the same issue is explained here from a slightly different point of view:
http://www.beoworld.org/beotech/mlsetups.htm

There are a lot of possibilities how to set up a ML system to fulfil the needs of the user within the given
limitations of the building, arrangement of rooms (zones), required functions, shared sources, secondary
systems or sources in linkrooms, ect., ect.

Using a Beo 6 or a Beo 4 with navigation button you can do a lot of "fine tuning" how your system should
work in different rooms (zones) and option setup is part of this game.

There are rarely "one fits all" answers in complex multiroom systems, dear friend ... Smile

Dear friend Big Smile too

Thanks for the BeoTech link ... I shall print that one for sure !

As for the other links I have read them many times and STILL get confused Crying

I think the issue is that I am lacking a simple theoretical model, so all the options lack somewhere to "hang" inside my head, and so I have to revert every time to painstaking reading, trailing and erring Smile

No comment on whether I should dismantle the System Module by myself ?

The sys-module seems to be installed properly, but ...

Smile ... if you are willing to brake your back again - there is a very, very small chance
          the following procedure will help:

-  after unplugging the mains, pull out the sys-module
-  restore power and start the TV using the "TV" command.
-  switch TV to standby and disconnect power again
-  install the sys-module
-  restore power and start the TV using the "TV" command
-  check in the service menu if sys-module is now available

And an update from me .... dealer came around today and said the BV8 had recently been upgraded to a new software level, and a know issue is that that particular level can result in a loss of contact with the System Module, so they will now dispatch a technician to get it working (probably a downgrade!)

Hello elephant,

after updating my BV 10-40 to software build 210, the system module didn´t work too anymore (SYSTEM MODUL = N/A in service menue). The system modul had been replaced with a new one (Mk 2). Since then I have problems with masterlink:

 http://archivedforum2.beoworld.org/forums/t/983.aspx

Another update to build 224 didn´t solve the problem.

It´s a real horror with B&O!

If System module "gets lost" after updating this is very likely caused by bad connection in PUK socket C1.

This socket is also used to connect the computer for updates and the bad contact will corrupt the file during
transmission.

To avoid updating problems in the future you'll have to replace some modules ...

My BV8-26 update has been done through C1 (ir -eye out for STB).

Otherwise you can not update the BV8 if it's not supplied with the system-module.

My dealer told my that specific with the system module, the software has to be updated in 2 stages.

First with the 107 build and after that (includes a factory default after update) the latest build. Only that way the system module would work he told me.

Done that and it works.

But what Vienna already mentioned., if you push the bracket of the system module in place, it needs probably also to push a bit against the scart.

I've noticed that after that the modules-connector fits better in it's place.

Thanks for the suggestion of the double push -- I tried that and no luck

The dealer is certain that it is a software upgrade issue -- and he is paying to the tech to come on site and fix it

That should happen this week Big Smile

But he had no luck in finding any obvious mistakes I (may have) made on the AV1 audio issue -- so that's the bigger worry since I do not want any open heart surgery on my new baby !

After all the tests (we) you have done - he is 100% right.
Whoever did the last update, why on earth this guy did NOT check if the update is working?

Dont worry about the sound of AV1 at the moment - it is very likely that

A) Best case scenario:

A sucessful update will also cure this problem

B) Murphy's law scenario:

    Open heart surgery? HEART TRANSPLANTATION!

If updating problems are caused by bad connection in C1 you'll get a
new main PCB and maybe also a new sys-module

If C1 socket is faulty the complete main PCB has to be exchanged.
(B&O says, repair can only be done by the exchange module service in Struer)

A failed update for the sys-module can block the module for further updates
maybe you will also need a new sys-module.

well the techs came - unfortunately I was not at home but I did step out of a meeting to talk to them on the phone.

I am not 100% certain but it seems like they did not attempt a downgrade.

They said they would order the mother board part.

They offered to take it away and repair it in their workshop (was this code for sending it back to Struer ?).

Unfortunately my family said they wanted to keep using it.

A downgrade would not make sense - it's not the new SW-build that is the problem. It's file corruption caused
by a hardware problem in C1 during datatransfer and it will happen to all SW-versions.

I prefer major repairs beeing done in a workshop, not at home.

LOL, no comment ...

It would be good if they did - I had passed on all your good advice (many thanks as always) - but I have a distinct impression that they don't Smile

But aside from the problems - are you happy with it? Sound, picture and all that stuff?

Yes we are .... except I made the decision to acquire the BV8-40 instead of the new Beoplay V1 based on the following reasoning:

1/ I had already purchased an RF modulator so I wanted a TV that could drive a Link Room

2/ I have established a network of BeoLink Wireless 1 for distributing N-Music and N-Radio around the house from the BV8 / LinkPlayer

3/ I wanted to distribute the sources on my BeoSound 4

So I really would like to have the System Module working !

However using the BV8s in their current disconnected mode with attached ATVs has shown me how a BeoPlay V1 would work :-)

I dare to say that the BV8-40 sounds (far) better than the Beoplay 1.

The BV8-40 has a three way speakersystem, Tweeters, Mids and a common Bassspeaker.

The BV8-26/32 only has a 2 way soundsystem.

The Beoplay didn't impress me last week.

you are of course correct; the BV8-40 is an improvement in:

- centre speaker sound, I am using [SPEAKER] mode switching far less than I did with the BV8-32

- ports ... I have more than I can use (at the moment) - a nice change !

- system menus and options are richer in function and create a sense of flexibility

- there seem to be subtle differences in the implementation of the PUC signals/logic certainly with respect to the Apple Remote interface, the ATV3 is very well behaved - it switches off at source change, and the screen comes alive when accessed (I always had to "waggle" Beo4 keys to wake up the ATV2 attached to the BV8-32, and it also has to be put to sleep)

- the theatre curtain effect. silly as that sounds (although the 20 second wake up process taxes one's instant gratification nerves)

- surround sound (at last ....... ahhhhh bliss)

The speaker profile of the BV8's make it lower than the V1 - the BV8-40 stands at 62cm on its rocker feet, the BeoPlay site says the V1 is 70cm - which would be an important difference for us

Today after delays caused at my end (Struer trip, holidays, work, et cetera) we had the scheduled repair (i.e. replacement) of the BV8-40's System Module and along the way the digital tuner and motherboard software levels were updated.

So good news Smile

Smile BV8-40 now chats on the ML and we can listen to N.Music, CD, and the like (I need to explore where the screen is truly off in this mode, I may have to set speaker default to 2 now)

Smile BV8-32 now receives Foxtel in the link room

Smile AV1's SCART now picks up audio (pleasant surprise, we were all worried that a motherboard replacement was looming)

Challenge now is to get LinkPlayer 2 working ... I had had a work around so now things should be simpler ... yet for some reason I can't seem to trigger the [PC] MediaCentre's menus - I am sure it is something I am doing wrong, but even one read of the initial LP V2 documentation does not resolve my misunderstanding, so I am off to see if there has been an update since some 2 months ago Smile

Then I have to declutter the Beo4s of all their [LINK] commands which are no longer needed.

Then I have to win the debate about trying to remove the BV8-32 from its temporary position (lesson to self, never give people temporary options that last two months, they grow used to the convenience! might need a V1 after all !!)

Then I potentially have to rewire the BS4 and its speakers to an [OPT-0] configuration ....

Still today we are "happy chappy" x 4 = Smile+Smile+Smile+Smile

AH HA !

The documentation had not changed (yes, it is way behind how Philippe has advanced LinkPlayer V2's beta during his summer holidays) BUT I did find these words hidden away deep down inside the 24 page manual:

On your TV go to the Connection or Socket menu and set the socket again.Look in your TV’s manual how a Beomedia 1 or Beomaster 5 should be connected and setup the connection accordingly. On some TV only the AV3 can be used. You may need to tell the TV that you havea Beomedia 1 or Beomaster 5 on that AV socket.

So the trick was to rewire my BV8-40 so that the MacMini was attached to AV3 and then define that connection as being a Beomedia connection.

BUT !!

Whilst I can control the menu etc I can not get audio to come out of the Beovision - it's as if something has crippled Philippe's scripts that change the sound setting from "headphones" to "beovision" - or it seems that LinkPlayer v2 may not be realising it needs to trigger the HDMI sound path - perhaps Beomedia is not the right choice ? So now I have tried Beomaster without any luck - and "unknown pc" has also had no effect.  If I chose "unknown" I lose arrow key controls - and still get now sound !

Strange thing, at one point I restarted Linkplayer and it started playing some music .....
