I noted that on the information relating to the above-mentioned speakers - feedback was asked on these. I use a set of 2702 with my Beocenter 4000 and was surprised (rather chuffed actually) to read that this the 2702 speakers were recommended for this system.
For the playing of cassettes and for the tuner the sound is great, however, there is a loss and some distortion when playing LPs (especially opera) on the higher notes, especially with sopranos such as Lucia Popp and Leontyne Price. Peter did suggest that I look for Red Line 60.2S or 6000 speakers for this system of mine (which I am presently sourcing).
In saying all this, however, I think these speakers give a half-decent sound and are unobtrusive in the corners of the room.

Sounds more like an issue with your turntable than your speakers. Distortion at higher frequencies and on vocals is usually a sign of a worn/damaged stylus IMHO.

Thanks Lee - I am going out today to buy a new stylus. I appreciate your remarks about these speakers and especially when it comes to the sound from Mahler 8th!!
David
Cleve - thank you for this and I am pleased to note that Lee stated that the problem with the upper registers could be worn stylus. So I am going out to buy a new one today. I also mentioned to him about the sound from the speakers from the Mahler 8th. Looking forward to playing the Verdi AIDA with Leontyne Price, Grace Bumbry and Domingo later this afternoon - hopefully the Triumphal Scene will sound as good as it did in the mid-70 when I first purchased the recording!!!
Which Beocenter 4000 do you have? there are two - the 70s one with one cassette deck or the 80s one with a double cassette? The 2702s are early 70s speakers.
Peter
Hi David,
What cartridge are you using on your turntable?
If you looking for clarity in the upper frequencies I would strongly suggest you look for a shibata or a micro line stylus. They are more expensive but do make a big difference. Very often old records that have been worn by an elliptical stylus sound like new when played with one (they track in a different part of the grove that's unworn)
Great Cleve. I nearly died when I rang B & O in Belfast and they quoted me £220 for a stylus!! Will contact your supplier immediately and see what he can do. In fact, it might be worth buying a couple in case of misfortune.
Best wishes, David
Peter my 4000 is the double cassette type and I want to thank you for your advice before on speakers when you suggested the RL 60.2.S or 6000 series on my previous post and I am looking out for a set now.
Best wishes and thanks for all your help - again.
I am using the MC5 on the Beocenter 2200 but on the 4000 I am using the Akai ATN 3401 (Diamond) (P7 ST Swiss made) and it is the Akai turntable that I was using to play through. I don't want to continue to use M5 as it costs £220 a touch!!
Where would you suggest that I look for a shibata or micro line - can this be fitted to the Akai turntable - would you know?
Thanks again
Cleve - thanks a bunch. Ordered two at £15 each and incidentally got a Stabata Cartridge/stylus as well for the Akai for £19.99 as suggested by Lee. So here's hoping.
Thanks a lot - David
