Interesting, but isn't technology for tightly focussing sound beams more likely to be of use in localised product advertising as highlighted in the first link?
I can also see this technology as being of great use in sports stadia or large spaces needing public address announcements like railway stations. These places are notorious for their PA systems having so many echoes and out-of-phase overlaps that the message becomes inaudible.

This shows up from time to time. The white paper is over 10 years old, which is about the last time I recall hearing about this. I've never seen it get any real traction or show up as a prototype product for a real device.

Last time I looked into this, they were making a low power version for non-defense related applications.
