Hi, I am looking for some BeoVox S45-2 speakers and live in the north west of the UK. I have spotted these on ebay which would wouldnt be too far to travel to pick up. Are they as stated?

Thanks,

Hi Miles
From memory the S45-2 have a type number of 6312 not 6302 so I am guessing these are the slightly older S45 speakers. The differences are relatively minor but I would probably hold out for a pair of S45-2's. Be prepared to replace the capacitors in whichever variant you buy as the electrolytic capacitors in the crossovers are unlikely to be functioning correctly after 30+ years.
I am also in the North West of England and have a spare pair of S45-2's that are a little tatty and require capacitor replacement, but I would be happy to let you have them for free if you collect them, message me if you are interested.

I would steer clear of those eBay ones. They need a lot of work and are not S45-2's. There also looks to be a piece of metal trim missing from one of them. If they say S45 on the label, that's what they are, esp with that series number. If you want true S45-2's, go with the previous poster if you want to refurbish them yourself. Yes, capacitors will need replacing but also glue the magnets (see many Beoworld posts on that subject) otherwise they will detach in transit and ruin the drivers. Otherwise, wait for a better pair but be prepared to pay more. If you wait and have them shipped, ensure the magnets are glued (epoxy) first to avoid dissappointment.
Dave.
Thanks guys, really appreciate your advice. I suspected as much from the advert. I have contacted Simon and will try and restore his spare speakers to their former glory....
Good choice.
there are lots of threads here about S45 and other speaker refurbishments from the same era. If you need any help or advice, just ask.

DMacri:They are the original S45 not the S45-2 because they have the resin back. Still good speakers, just not the newer version. The resin back has mounts you can use to hang them directly on a wall rather than on the stand which may help in some circumstances.
I agree, and you will see in another thread that the S45's had at least two types of resin back during their production.
The original S45's are in no way inferior to the S45.2: it could be argued that the 45.2 was a cheaper version with an mdf/ply back but with metal trim to front and back edges instead of just the front. The resin back allowed either vertical or inclined wall mounting.
There is some over-emphasis on the S45.2 in this forum because it is easier to a make the distinction from the later S45 speakers which are totally different.
I have the early S45's paired with an early Beomaster 2000 and they are outstanding.

I agree with you though when mounted on stands, the S45-2 does look neater. I think sonically there is nothing in it.

To add to the confusion the last individuals of the Beovox S45 (6302) production had the new tweeter installed sowere technically identical to Beovox S45-2 (6312) but of course still with the resin back.
I can't tell any difference in sound either.

Hi Simon,
Just a quick note to say thank you for donating your speakers! I have cleaned them up and they are now hooked up to my Beocenter 7000. In time i will replace the capacitors....hope you enjoyed the wine! Thanks again, Miles.
