After moving our home I decided to get rid of all my disc players, CD's and DVD's. My local B&O dealer helped me with disconnecting packaging, moving and reconnecting all my B&O stuff. I ripped all my audiophile music lossless into iTunes.
My DVD movie collection meanwhile consisted of approximately 300 DVD's. I ripped all my movies to a hard disc that is connected to a WD TV Live. Now all digital players (Apple TV, WD TV Live and Playstation 3) are connected to my Beosystem 3, which is the best media hub in the market. All my media at my fingertip controlled with a Beo4 remote.
Now I have a DVD 2 and a Beocenter 2 left over. :)
I will gladly help you get rid of your Beocenter 2, I'll even pay for the shipping
I must admit, that I don't understand why you use a WD TV Live for your movies, if you have an Apple TV, but other than that it sounds cool, and I would love to see pictures of your setup.
Apple TV doesn't play every movie format and you can't connect a hard disk.
Everything is in the cabinet: ATV, BS3, WDTV
Some pics of my old setup with Beocenter 2 and DVD 2
How do you find the quality with the WD live? I was thinking of buying one.
Also are you using a NAS for the storage? About to go same route at my place, also loking at a BS3 as I think it just makes sense to have a central brain that runs everything.
Wauw, I really like your setup, fantastic with the BL5s and BL3s :o)
I only ask about the Apple TV as you ripped the DVDs yourself and therefore could choose the format. I'm just not a big fan of the WD interface. I swapped my WD and my NAS, for a Mac Mini as a central hub and an ATV at every TV. The important thing is it works for you, I was just curious :o)
I rarely use discs either, but still have my BS9000 because I love the design.
WD TV Live surprised me in rendering the DVD's. I just connected an external USB drive to the WD TV Live. So far that's my simple NAS.
I agree, the Beosystem 3 is a great central hub that runs everything with your Beo4.
The WD interface is worse compared to ATV but it gives you the freedom to store and play all your digital media. Apple TV has too many restrictions and has to stream from your iTunes library somewhere on your Mac. I also thought about the solution with a Mac Mini, but WD does the job and is very low priced.
Apple TV + Mac Mini = 720 €
WDt TV Live + external 2TB HD = 280 €
Wow what a beautiful setup very minimalistic and sleek you must be very happy with it.

I ripped all my audiophile music lossless into iTunes.
So this means your Mac/PC needs to be on, in order to listen to music?
My setup is "laser free" too and almost the same as yours. All my media is on a Time Capsule. All video-formats can be read with my jailbroken ATV2. (XBMC is great. I love the interface) Only restriction is 720p max. ATV2 can't handle 1080p, but I can live with that. I could use ATV2 for music, but unless it is not "airplayed" from the iPad, my TV or Mac needs to be on and I don't want that. So I added a Sonos for my music.
In the near future I will move all my media to a 4Tb Nas.

The most recent version of the Apple TV supports 1080p. The Apple TV also has the best interface for Netflix. I have 3 Apple TVs: one connected to the BeoSystem 3 in the living room, one connected to the BeoVision 4 with BeoSystem 1 in the den, and one connected to an Avant in the bedroom. They all connect seamlessly to the computer with iTunes as a server. The program Handbrake very easily converts any video format to iTunes.
I know, but Netflix is not available here, and I like to watch and listen my media without iTunes running on mac. With a ATV3, that is not possible yet..
1080P support yes, but no 24p playback. So using an ATV is for me unfortunatly not an option, since i have ripped all blurays as 24hz.
I myself am succesfully running a Mac Mini connected to my BV 7. The media is stored on a 10TB Synology so i wont run out of space anytime soon :-)

you are killing me
I started my working life (after national service) as a computer operator mounting and demounting these suckers ("The 2311 stored 7.25 megabytes on a single removable IBM 1316 disk pack (the same type used on the IBM 1311) consisting of six platters that rotated as a single unit.") that I knew I dare not drop because they cost the earth - or at least my year's salary
BeoNut since '75
Hey Ehlerz,
did you used Handbrake to rip your Blu-Rays ?
I'm searching for a simple sofware to rip my BR discs on a hard drive and play them on my BV10.
Hehe, luckily times has changed over the past years. My DS1511+ has 5 2tb disks running raid5 giving me effectivly about 8 TB, still a bit more than 7,25 MB though :-)
Hi Steph
Yes handbrake amongst others. I have been experimenting a lot with various software solutions and have also had good luck with for instance MakeMKV which is very userfriendly..
So just get startet, you will quickly learn how to do a good job. If you need any help i can recommend using the Forum on the MakeMKV website.
What will you use as mediaplayer if i may ask?
God luck ripping
/EhlerZ
Thanks Ehlerz !
I'm searching for a good mediaplayer too !
I have a BeoSound 5, so the BeoMaster 5 with the good codecs couls do the job ?
Or, a Tvix multimedia player, i know B&O used this to demo movies for the BV10, and it is in the PUC list.
Buy a hdi Dune mediaplayer.Much better then Tvix.
and is also in the puc list!
Don't know very well the Dune players.
Why not ? Thanks for the info, Koning.
I myself use a Mac Mini as Media player. Install Plex and you have the perfect media center in my opinion. A bit expensive maybe, but then you also have a completely functioning computer hooked up to your tv for internet browsing and so on. Endless possibilities. Furthermore, everything is controlled with Beo4 through PUC.
And here's a blatant promotion for our Plex server write-up :)

even my uber-geek son praises the latest Plex
Moxxey, do I need to understand you're part of the Plex development team???

No? I work for various tech magazine publishers (worldwide). Nick, one of our writers, wrote the above news piece.
It's fair to say, however, Nick really likes Plex.
Fab setup!
I'm looking to buy a beovision 7 to replace my dated Avant, but want to use a WDTV. Like you I've ripped my DVDs, music, photos and home movies to a NAS and the whole house can access except the Avant. How did you get the Beo 4 to control the WDTV?
I bought a mac mini which i have now disconnected (cross graded for a NAS), I loved Plex. The only issue I had was with the movies I purchased on the iTunes store were not playable on plex I just wish it world flawlessly
Now i have my own cloud on the NAS and am considering iTunes MATCH. :-(
